Marina, Dowager Duchess of Kent was not just a member of the Greek Royal House but her Great Grandfather was Tsar Alexander II, her father was Vladimir Alexandrovich Romanov and her mother was Elena who married into the Greek Royal family. Marina’s uncle, Vladimir later became the self declared Tsar of Russia after the execution of Nicholas II, his son Alexei and his brother Michael. Her Royal heritage was why she felt the Queen Mother and Alice, Duchess of Gloucester were “those Scottish girls” and she was better. In addition, she had been chosen as the bride for the Prince of Wales, later Duke of Windsor. However, he preferred married women!

Princess Marina was a first cousin of Prince Philip, and an aunt by marriage of QEII. Although not rich by royal standards, she was well provided for in widowhood. Her home at Coppins was bequeathed to her husband by his favourite aunt, Princess Victoria (or Toria, as she was known, who had died just before her brother, King George V at the end of 1935). And while she herself may not have automatically received a royal stipend during the war, her children certainly did, which included the full costs of their education and a number of staff. Queen Mary is known to have been close to her - supplying much of her jewellery; and she was particularly close to her sister Olga, Princess Paul of Yugoslavia. What she lacked in funds, she received in kind, and privately, from the King and members of all the royal families she was connected to. I'm not sure what you're referring to when you describe the air crash that killed Prince George as a mystery. While the princes' sexuality had long aroused far more interest than it should have done - and conspiracy theorists might hold that the Powers-that-be had a history of killing-off gay or bisexual princes during the period of all homosexual activity being illegal and punishable with imprisonment - reference Prince Albert Victor in 1892, it is simply a conspiracy theory and nothing more. Irrespective of where the duke was going or who he was with in the 1942 crash, it has now been established that it was definitely an accident. I suspect her son the 2nd Duke took her on a tour of the Far East when he was aged 17, rather than the other way around! This is because as Duke of Kent, he would have been the official visitor - and because he was unmarried, his mother remained Duchess of Kent, and not Dowager, a title that she was never obliged to use and didn't technically become until his marriage to Katherine in 1960. The religion of the Earl of St Andrews and Baron Downpatrick has nothing to do with their lack of royal status - either now or in future, when they eventually succeed as Duke of Kent. This is because under the Provisions of the Titles Deprivation Act, 1917, the princely style and titular dignity of His or Her Royal Highness is reserved only for children and grandchildren in the male line of a Sovereign. The only exception was "the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales," however in 2013, Queen Elizabeth II issued Letters Patent extending this exception to "all children of the (then) Duke and Duchess of Cambridge." (This was in order to avoid the situation where if their firstborn had been female, she might subsequently have been displaced by the birth of a male). As he is a grandchild in the male line of King George V, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent has used the titular dignity of HRH all his life (he was styled (HRH The Earl of St Andrews when his father was still alive); but because he is not the Prince of Wales, none of his children are entitled to be known as Princes or Princesses with the dignity of HRH and they are instead, styled as the children of a non-royal duke. Indeed, as it appears King Charles desires to limit the princely style and use of HRH, possibly to the main line only, I suspect that a new Titles Deprivation Act will; replace the 1917 one, and future grandchildren of a Sovereign that are not in the main line of succession, will also be styled in this way, although he may concede to allowing their younger children (but not grandchildren) to remain Prince/ss without the dignity of HRH...
The Queen's Letters Patent of 2012 had nothing to do with male primogeniture; she just wanted all of William's children to be HRH while she was still alive instead of just George. I personally thought it was overkill, given that they'd all be HRH eventually, but hey--that was her pleasure.
Duchess of Kent,Marina was princess of Greece and Denmark, she had relatives in many European families,Habsburgs,Queen Juliana of Netherlands,Princess Irene,Duchess of Aosta,Queen Sophia of Spain,Romanian royals,Greek royals,Danish royals,Norwegian royals because of that connections she could make pro-British international policy, influence on politics, diplomats of other European countries. She played important role in European diplomacy, economic, educational ties, british representative among European royalty.
The future styling of the current Earl of St Andrew’s as “his Grace” and not HRH is not because of his Catholicism but rather the fact that he is a GREAT grandson of a sovereign (George V). The HRH designation ends with his father - a grandson of the sovereign. Even if the Earl had remained an Anglican, he would not be an HRH when he assumes the dukedom.
The duchess of Kent has done so much hands on work for children. A genuinely good woman. The royal family have the same double standards as any one else when finances become an issue.
The Duchess of Kent has lived apart from the Duke for many years.( she’s 89 by the way) They have not divorced because there is nobody else involved, and because of the Duchess’ s Catholic faith. They remain good friends, and after the Dukes stroke stayed with him when he returned home ,for several weeks until his mobility improved. She lives in London. She is a lovely lady and taught music ,singing and volunteered for Help the Aged too.
No. The change in religion is NOT why the Dukedom of Kent will not be a royal dukedom. It's because of the Letters Patent of George V limiting who is called prince or princess. At this stage (until King Charles changes it) princes and princess are children of the monarch, male line grandchildren (in other words children of princes, but not princesses, remembering that traditionally one takes their father's name, so if a princess marries a commoner, her children are commoners like Princesses Margaret and Anne, both children of monarchs. The only great-grandchildren of monarch that get to be princes and princesses are the children of the eldest son (though this may have changed to eldest child now) of the Prince of Wales. That's why William's children are princes and princess. Once Prince George has children, they will be entitled to titles, but his siblings won't be until their father becomes king
I enjoy your videos very much, they’re always interesting, this one though, did irk me a little, you kept saying Princess Alexander, but it was Princess AlexandRA.
She was not so wealthy like another members of the "firm", but she was more royal than the queen herself. Tall, elegant and beautiful, she could easely outshine other women of the royalty.
Duke of Kent knows what a real poverty is ???? His mother , as teenager, lived in Paris, best private school and education. It’s was not the poverty of a worker’s family, proletariat ...
HM The Queen always considered the Kents more Royal as Princes Marina was Royal while the Queen Mother was a commoner. She always helped Prince Michael of Kent and he was an given an apartment in KP. This concern was raised as they were paying minimal rent.
POVERTY is a word that can be used by different classes of Society! From information her life Marina was not first line royal in UK after her husband died in air craft 1942 so she had to leave her country house APPLETON(originally given to Edward the 7th’s daughter princess Maude (Queen Maude of Norway 1906) so Marina had a 90 room APARTMENT IN KENSINGTON PALACE! Poor NO!
Lady Colin Campbell said today it was the Queen Mother behind this. I would say it was out of spite because Princess Marina called her a 'common Scots girl'. Which she was so the Queen Mother did this out of spite and revenge.
If they do Royal duties they should get recompense for it , 50/100 on the public service list certainly would not make a difference to public finances compared to the brand UK. Ps I'm Irish
Princess Marina was vehemently opposed to her son marrying katherine Worsley , a "commoner" and also disliked the idea that she ,herself, would no longer be Duchess of Kent
Yes, what exactly is "genteel" poverty anyway? My connotation of the term is that while the widow of a Duke had lost a lot of her wealth (as compared with other Duchesses) and may have had less than other royalty, she was far from being poor in the sense that most people would think.
This channel gives such ignorant and lumpish narration. ‘Princess Alexander’ indeed. Mrs. Ogilvie might dispute that idea. (Is a ‘Vice- Count’ a Viscount?)
Thank you for letting people know about HRH's interest in Freemasonry. Many biographers avoid mentioning this important fact of their subject interest.
As far as I'm aware all the senior members of the Royal Family are members of the Freemasons. My dad was also one. They don't deserve all the conspiracy theories around them. They are one very large global charity organisation. My dad lived and died a Christian, upholding Christian values and was buried after a service was held for him at his church. He was also a Grand Master at the time of his death.
@@fritzhenning1 True, but Churchill was a Freemason but it is never mentioned. Many PMs of Oz were Freemasons, but reading their bios you would never know. It is the Biographers who don't mention it.
When Queen Elizabeth II took the Throne in 1952 she ensured that her Aunt Marina received financial support from the Crown, with the support and action of Sir Winston Churchill, as described above as King George VI failed to do so. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was always jealous of Princess Marina who was Royal Born therefore several social stations higher than herself. Please read Lady Colin Campbell's book 'The Queen Mother" - the first Chapter alone will blow your mind.
There is no mystery surrounding the air crash , the credible facts have long been established. On other notes….Princess Alexandra NOT Alexander unless I misunderstand your narration. As for Princess Marina’s position, yes indeed she was improperly treated - largely due to a great deal of disaffection between the Queen and the Princess . The reasons for which , being quite convoluted but true. And also partly because Marina’s brother - in - law , as the Regent of Yugoslavia , found himself in the MOST impossible situation , impossible to solve if trying to protect his people from the ravages of war. Alone that is interesting . This channel would do well to consult more closely with Celia Lee . IMO
Yes, both jarring mispronunciations! The Queen mentioned with Princess Marina was the Queen Mother not our recently deceased late Queen Elizabeth ll, as she and Princess Alexandra were reportedly very close.
@@alexandradane3672 No, not at all. I knew what you meant. You made a great comment. It's merely a variation in phrasing. So many on both sides of the woke issue are over-reacting. Just be respectful of people who are different from you. Period. End of discussion.
So that’s their version of poverty. And Churchill had the nerve to state that she didn’t spend extravagantly. But earlier in this story it was mentioned that she dressed fashionably………WOWWWWW!!! I guess it was just all too too much for the royals at this time, because wasn’t this happening in the midst of King Edwards’s abdication and marriage to Wallace Simpson (his love interest) and should she be given an HH title plus where he (Edward & Wallace) would live?
A bit of information given out in this video is wrong. Too bad the person(s) who runs this channel does not think accuracy of information is important. The use of HRH is not attached to the title of Duke of Kent, he was granted HRH status because he is a grandson of a sovereign (George V) and his siblings and his cousin the Duke of Gloucester. & etc.
😮it is quite likely that the late Queen supported her Aunt privately. Princess Marina’s daughter Princess Alexandra was one of Her Majesty’s closest friends. The Queen was known to have supported elderly relatives and some retired members of staff who had devoted their lives to the service of the Crown.
Phillipa Pay £1000 in 1942 is the equivalent of millions today, she wasn't poverty stricken she'd also got some fabulous jewels of her own and the public purse is for those working royals born into the house of windsor and the royal family are not worth billions, the palaces, windsor castle and a lot of the i royal collection are NOT personally owned by them, they are "owned IN RIGHT OF THE CROWN" which means because they are the Monarch, they actually belong to the nation the Monarch is worth over £400 million, but as she couldn't be officially be part of the public purse, which is only certain expenses covered as a working royal, they don't receive any cash and that is what stopped when Prince George, Duke of Kent died, but as it couldn't covered by what is now the sovereign grant. the Monarch covered it
@@lsmith9249 I understand all of this. Thank you. I recently read that their portfolio of land, art, jewels, stocks, bonds, etc., aside of what is owned by the British people, is, in fact, worth something like $98 billion. In future the dukedom of kent will no longer become royal but a noble dukedom despite their ancestry has direct paternal line of Windsor and of more of royal heritage from both sides (maternally from royal family of Greece and Denmark) than their cousin the late Queen Elizabeth II.
If you read BUTLER ROYAL she wasnt impoverished. She received a genrous allowance by Queen Mary and King George and Queen Elizabeth Ii. She left valuable jewels to her children as well.
I was under the impression from this video that Churchill disagreed with the decision that "impoverished" (and, as ever, we are speaking relatively) the Duke of Kent's widow.
Genteel poverty is far from a commoner's poverty. Bet if she had been British born, the Treasury wouldn't have been bent on a mission. Smells like the King didn't like her so it was more of a personal vendetta.
It was George vi's queen- consort, Elizabeth Bowles- Lyon (the late queen's mother) who had issues with Princess Marina. (She also had issues with Wallis Simpson Windsor, the Duchess of Windsor) [Technically, the queen mother, Elizabeth, would have had to curtsy to Princess Marina when with other royal families because Princess Marina was born a princess. The Bowles-Lyon's (the late queen Mum's) family were/ are nobles but they were and are not now royality.] (That is why Catherine of Wales has to curtsy to the Princesses Anne, Beatrice and Eugenie --- UNTIL Catherine is the queen consort; then the others will have to curtsy to her! Queen Regnant and Queen Consort supercede a prince, princess and on down the line of nobles and others below them)

Happy birthday 🎊🎂🎉🎁🎈 Duke of Kent
NOT ALEXANDER !!! ALEXANDRA
The Duchess, according to royal biographer Hugo Vickers, was "the only war widow in Britain whose estate was forced to pay death duties".
I think the Earl IS CoE, no? It's his younger brother who's Roman Catholic.
They are fabulous members of the Royal Family.
I don't think I've ever seen a photo of her in which she didn't appear to be smirking.
From information her life Marina was not first line royal in UK after her husband died in air craft 1942 so she had to leave her country house APPLETON(originally given to Edward the 7th’s daughter princess Maude
(Queen Maude of Norway 1906) so Marina had a 90 room

Dreadful commentator voice. Study Princess Anne
Absolutely horrible, ignorant and uneducated.
Lady Colin Campbell said today it was the Queen Mother behind this. I would say it was out of spite because Princess Marina called her a 'common Scots girl'. Which she was so the Queen Mother did this out of spite and revenge.
That I can believe, the Queen mother was a right nasty lady.
The so called Lady Colin Campbell is a fantasist and very few people in Britain take her seriously or have even heard of her

What do you have to offer the world. Nothing but negativity, just like the Queen Mother.
How very selfish.
The king was right. The other war widows didnt get a thought. They struggled even more.
The Earl was never his royal highness so he would never be His royal highness Duke of Kent. That has nothing to do with the fact that he is Catholic.
"Poverty"?.....NO
Yes, what exactly is "genteel" poverty anyway? My connotation of the term is that while the widow of a Duke had lost a lot of her wealth (as compared with other Duchesses) and may have had less than other royalty, she was far from being poor in the sense that most people would think.
It is difficult to understand someone living in poverty when they leave as inheritance jewelry.
@6:46 the word 'viscount' is pronounced 'vai-cont'. The 's' is silent.
This channel gives such ignorant and lumpish narration. ‘Princess Alexander’ indeed. Mrs. Ogilvie might dispute that idea. (Is a ‘Vice- Count’ a Viscount?)
Princess Alexandra. How can your AI not be programmed with that loved lady's name. She is NOT Alexan DER disgusted.
'interest in Freemasonry', hardly. He was chief wizard and Lord High magic wand waver of this band of males.
@@fritzhenning1 True, but Churchill was a Freemason but it is never mentioned. Many PMs of Oz were Freemasons, but reading their bios you would never know. It is the Biographers who don't mention it.

They did.

Katherine Worsley was from a very rich family.
The woman shown as HRH Princess Alexandra is in fact Lady Elton, a Lady in Waiting to HM Queen Elizabeth II.
What a disgrace ...... am sure Cookie had a hand in this !!
Absolutely she did. Lady Colin Campbell has just said so and she is never wrong.
The “s” in Viscount is silent.
Gurrrllllll I wish I had some of that gentile poverty, this woman was not poor
The Duchess was treated appallingly. I only hope hat the royal family made funds available to her on a private basis.
Why do narrators on these channels refer to Princess Alexandra as Alexander?
He’s not that much older than Tampons and Cowmilla 🤷♀️ He has served well ❤️
Marina was never poor she was the window of the Kings son!!!!!!
IMO
Well said and yes, you heard correctly- Alexander. Oh you missed Vicecount!! Wow.
Yes, both jarring mispronunciations!
The Queen mentioned with Princess Marina was the Queen Mother not our recently deceased late Queen Elizabeth ll, as she and Princess Alexandra were reportedly very close.

No, not at all. I knew what you meant. You made a great comment.
I had remarked only to expand after listening to a young friend as not everyone knows that The Queen was very different from her mother the Queen. I am of the older generation who knew The King and the Queen. Most younger folk don’t know much of the British Royal Family’s background and relationships.
Genteel poverty? Bet she didn't need to use food banks or shop in Charity shops for her clothes.
What do you mean ' shared three children'! Some new woke definition of 'having children'?
It's merely a variation in phrasing. So many on both sides of the woke issue are over-reacting. Just be respectful of people who are different from you. Period. End of discussion.
@@karenryder6317 Sorry, this is not a variation in phrasing, its just stupidity sharing three children!
stop sprouting the term 'woke' at any opportunity.
Smart expose biography.
& etc.
Wow, The Firm has a portfolio of something like $98billion and they could not help her out with private gifts from relatives?
They did....
Phillipa Pay £1000 in 1942 is the equivalent of millions today, she wasn't poverty stricken
she'd also got some fabulous jewels of her own
and the public purse is for those working royals born into the house of windsor
and the royal family are not worth billions, the palaces, windsor castle and a lot of the i royal collection
are NOT personally owned by them, they are "owned IN RIGHT OF THE CROWN" which means because
they are the Monarch, they actually belong to the nation
the Monarch is worth over £400 million,
but as she couldn't be officially be part of the public purse, which is only certain expenses covered as a working royal, they don't receive any cash and that is what stopped when Prince George, Duke of Kent
died, but as it couldn't covered by what is now the sovereign grant. the Monarch covered it
@@lsmith9249 I understand all of this. Thank you. I recently read that their portfolio of land, art, jewels, stocks, bonds, etc., aside of what is owned by the British people, is, in fact, worth something like $98 billion. Which surprised me because I thought the royals of Monaco, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein were the only ones in the billionaire category among Europe's royal families. Perhaps there was a typo. Land is worth lots of pounds. I am well aware that none of these people are flat broke and without any financial resources to use.
@@lsmith9249 P.S. I researched it and the 1,000 pounds sterling from 1942 would be worth 52,370 pounds today.
Well, it appears that the BRF does have a history of ensuring that their relatives remain in a position of relative "beggardliness". Keeping them "at heel" or knowing who is really relevant.

In future the dukedom of kent will no longer become royal but a noble dukedom despite their ancestry has direct paternal line of Windsor and of more of royal heritage from both sides (maternally from royal family of Greece and Denmark) than their cousin the late Queen Elizabeth II.
royal dukedoms cease to be royal when they are inherited by the great grandsons of Monarchs
If you read BUTLER ROYAL she wasnt impoverished. She received a genrous allowance by Queen Mary and King George and Queen Elizabeth Ii. She left valuable jewels to her children as well.

What a nasty way for the Firm, RF and Churchill to treat a the family of the Duke of Kent’s Mother and siblings. Shameless!
I was under the impression from this video that Churchill disagreed with the decision that "impoverished" (and, as ever, we are speaking relatively) the Duke of Kent's widow.
Genteel poverty is far from a commoner's poverty.

The royal family doesn’t have a portfolio of 90 odd billion pounds most of this property is state owned .😊
That is not quite the way it is. The Crown owns it, and the State receives 75% of the income. That is why the UK can have the National Health, and also why vast swathes of natural landscape, forests, seashores, and the like, are preserved for posterity. The part that brings in the money is the rental properties in London. The benefit the Treasury .
