My head cannons for it is that the unknown are the monsters attempt to make a counter to the equal dragon weapon. A monster species the result of selective breeding to make a living weapon.
@@CaveTroglodyte Its probably the ancient ancestor to them, similar to how its theorized how Disufiroa is the relative of Alatreon. If I had to guess during this time this species had a hard time surviving because everything was so powerful, so it evolved a way to change gender, along with the ability to exert more and more of its power. As time went on its insane power wasn't needed anymore, so it essentially got weaker. This receded to the point where the gender switch ability wasn't needed anymore, so it was essentially lost in genetics. There's probably a male Rathian or a female Rathalos born every few hundred or thousand eggs, it's just that the game doesn't depend on that.
My guess is that it's the missing link, the monster from which most other flying wyverns branch out. It has the physical characteristics of the raths, the ferocity and anger of diablos and monoblos, the internal gas build up and dispersal mechanisms of gravios and basarios, and the hollow thorns of espinas, which in this case contain a deadly acid instead of a neurotoxin.

Maybe it's just me, but the section from 1:20 to 2:20 has a slight sorrowful undertone to its intensity. It makes me think of someone fighting to save or avenge a close friend or family member.
It is, for the fighters but mostly for the wyvern itself. Once the second phase starts, it is fighting and desperate to survive against and kill the Hunter - but at this point both are beaten and on their last leg, and the "rivalry" between these different types of monsters is about to come to an end. It is similar with Zerureusu, only its initial starting music is peaceful from the start and almost background atmosphere, only ramping up a bit for the second phase, when it gets desperate.

I like how the theme starts with what sounds like bagpipes. The instrument that you usually hear when you've failed a hunt.

We do know, they're a relative to the Raths, however unlike them Unknown can be either male or female
