  • Matt Dye and Adam Keith of Land & Legacy discuss all things frost seeding! Frost seeding is a great option, whether you have an existing perennial food plot, or are establishing a new plot. The freezing and thawing that takes place this time of year works small hard seeds like clover into the soil, assisting in germination and establishment of the seed. Another benefit is the minimal input cost of equipment and seed needed to establish a food plot that will provide forage for deer, turkeys and other wildlife for many years!

You will get great results in the worked area and good results in the current field but could get better results in current field if ya mow or blow the leaves off first

Thanks guys. I have 2 questions: did you do anything to address weeds that would come up, or do you do it afterwards? And if afterwards, what do you use that kills weeds, but not the clover? thanks guys!

If you're establishing a new plot you can spray the site a few weeks prior with a non selective herbicide like glyphosate before you plant. With an established plot you can use a grass selective herbicide like clethodim or a broadleaf herbicide that won't hurt your clover like butyrac 200 commonly called 2-4-DB - depending on what you're trying to treat. Hope this helps!

@@Whitetail_Properties One more question: Will a product like Arrest also kill forbs, in addition to grasses? Thanks again!

@@PatrickLHolley We're not entirely sure without having the package showing what it controls. we do know Slay will control most kinds of broadleaf weeds but not all. Slay will also control a few of the heavier sedge-type grasses that Arrest MAX isn’t designed to control. Slay won’t control most kinds of grasses, and it won’t control woody weeds or vines. The Slay label provides a list of the weeds Slay is designed to control.

Dozer did all the heavy lifting. That’s great. It this were a hay field I would think you would need a different approach ?

Yes, in that case you want to terminate the grasses with herbicide and work the field to get good seed to soil contact.

What kind of perennial clover does deer like to eat? Thinking about going to a coop to get a big bag

Good info and choice. I will also add that crimson is an annual clover.

We like a mix of white & red clover, with chicory and alfalfa for perennial plots.

Is there an annual blend you recommend?

We like a blend of cereal rye, wheat, oats, triticale, berseem, crimson & balansa clover, turnips, radishes and winter peas.

@@Whitetail_Properties my apologies for not being more clear. I do that for my fall mix but as far as a clover or chicory mix for the spring summer? Red clover , white clover, plow down mix by one of the major companies?
