Great film ! Thanks for posting. I picked up a Cheap Harbor Freight Welder Wire Fed Mig for $80. on sale with a coupon, added auto dark hood, gloves and few extras all in $150. First weld and repair was the back door latch on my ford van, I welded an ugly spattered weld & used a 16 penny nail to hold the broken latch so the cable could pull it again. Saved $150. did not need to replace it. Since then I have welded 20 things each one with a better weld and saved a bunch fixing things. Currently making a 3 point hitch for my tiny tractor. Not on a farmer, but own some land. My buddy called me last week and said his neighbor tossed out a stack of steel. I drove by because, I am now collecting scrap to build and repair things. Great value in owning a welder, even the cheapest you can get.

When my farm equipment broke, I used 3 car batteries and some household mains flex to make a welder.
I used it for years, and it did a really good job :) .

As you might have noticed , the hired hand was no where to be seen after he learned how to weld, he moved to Detroit, got A job at Ford and never mucked out A barn again!!

Until the auto industry tanked and he had to sell out before Detroit collapsed. He moved to Flint for employment then the water poisoned him. RIP hired hand. Meanwhile the farmer kept up with the times and handed the business to his sons who now farm thousands of acres and are multi-millionaires. 8=P
Everyone I knew in college that came from a farm couldn't wait to get off the farm and NEVER wanted to go back.

Delightful video! Takes me back to my teen years in the mid-1960s when my dad and an uncle bought my first welder for me. It is a Lincoln 225 amp AC unit that I still use. I too was a farm raised kid. Thanks!
I still own the Lincoln cracker box ac welder. That my dad used when i was a kid. It still works great. I rarely use it . As i own and use my hobart stickmate ac/dc . And my hobart 190 mig ....
It’s amazing that every farm had a Lincoln AC 225 buzz box and they never got a more capable AC/DC machine. I have an Idealarc250 AC/DC and love it

I swear I never get sick of watching this video. I bought a Miller Multimatic 255 a few months back. Does DC Stick, DC TIG, MIG, Spray Arc MIG and Pulse MIG. Had to make a repair on my tractor last week with it. The Pulse MIG is an amazing process and a game changer. It makes me look like a better welder than I am to be honest. That said, with all the fancy computerized settings that make it so easy, I still enjoy stick welding the most. 7018 almost runs itself once you get it burning. If all I had was the old stick machine in this video I'd be just fine.

Ahhhh… the good ol days at the farm. When a neighbor would light an arc with his welder the rf interference was enough to make the radio and the tv buzz. Only one neighbor didn’t have a welding machine and took his repairs to the neighbors who did.

this was kind of fun to watch. that old GE buzz box brings back memorys, welded a lot with an old forney. the weld rod [other than 6011] runs and welds like it could be 6012 very common back in the day. thanks for posting this.
Man back when the companies cared more about the customer , I bougth a welder not to long ago and it didnt include almost nothing compared to that farm welder , I would buy that torch thing. The sure are good tools to have around
i have one of those arc torches and they do work well and you are right, companies now dont give a crap about customers at all

@@mrrolandlawrence lolll all tig welders can arc weld... and honestly unless your looking into aluminum and precision stainless... a mig would be most practical... but sometimes you need that digging force that only a nice 6010 or 6011 rod will give ya

arc welding has it's place .I fix a lot of customer job with arc outside welding with my miller bobcat 1/2 plus thickness . Many people don't have the skill level I weld Arc, mig and tig. I do it all Hawk welding in MI the cost of a used arc welder $ 25 to 150 sure beat a small mig 140 amp for $ 600 and 100% duty cycle . You can't beat old school

Back when you could make road worthy trailers and modified vehicles without big brother getting their cut of the money they would have gotten if you just went and bought a manufactured trailer.
So the electric carbon torch used to be the answer for gas bottles. Everything you needed in a buzz box.

Now days, farmers don't stick around the farm to practice welding in the wintertime. After the harvest, they split for Arizona in their RV and spend their time rebalancing their stock portfolio.
The demo welds looked ok in the film shown in the barn, but the repair welds all looked like bird shit. Its amazing what passed for good welds back then. They would never present such crappy looking welds in a training film today.
LOL bird shit like that is still being laid on farms every where trust me i repair a lot of it after it breaks again.
the repairs looked like shit even for 6010/11 but thats what happens when you weld a shovel with 1/8.
Brainmalfuction I keep a scratch start 80amp machine and a small bottle of argon with a TIG torch for shit like that. I forget the tungsten size I use, but I fill with 0.35 70s6 mig wire.
try welding a thin shovel with 1/8 inch 6012 and see how bad your bead looks, you have to do it little by little so it doesnt burn through so it ends up rough

130 amp welder with 20% duty cycle! Far cry form my Miller Trailblazer 325 EFI. 325 amps at 100% duty cycle. Great video though. I'm glad to see how affordable some welders are today for folks just getting started. Yeah the cheap ones are made overseas but at least not all in china. I have a 160 amp AHP with a 60% duty cycle and weighs around 11 or 12 pounds. Only paid around $225 new. Great little dual voltage machine. I keep it as a loaner. When friends ask me to weld something and I'm too busy, I hand them my AHP with some rods and a spare helmet and tell them to watch some Chucke2009.
And it was only 100-115 lbs!
I have a good little dc stick welder also but the truth is the transformer welder will long outlive the inverter ones.
Agreed. You can really learn some good stuff from Welding Tips and Tricks. Great channel. I recommend them too but Chucke2009 has full projects and is entertaining. Gives you the feeling like "If he can do it, so can I". That said, I don't care for the direction his channel has gone recently. Seems like it's just infomercials and I'm sick of all the tractor restoration/failure videos.
I wonder if the demonstrator burned any holes in his necktie. When I weld, I always be sure to wear my leather necktie. 😀

The way things used to be, when people fixed things instead of throwing out the Chinese-made junk and replacing it with a new one. I bet that welder didn't come from horrible freight, either!
I had seen a stik welder at harbor freight one time i dont buy that cheap ass shit so i bought the lincoln 225 stik welder it does an xcellent job i wish harbor freight would close up for good i despise that place
@@thomasfaucette6439 The only thing I don't like about Lincoln, Esab and miller is when Trump confirmed the stimulus checks were in the mail, all the big 3 almost doubled their prices overnight. Harbor freights and all the generic welders aren't much higherthan before the pandemic. I know because I was in the market so I followed prices closely.

Every house wife needs a welder for christmas
So I have to mention something that caught my eye. We have all seen footage or photographs from the past with looks like current technology in them and I may have found one that is quite interesting. I would like to find out exactly what is there rather than speculate. 6:24-6:31 mins into the film there is a younger man with glasses with a silver looking square object on his back. He moves slightly and you can see the the square on his back has a reflective glass of some sort. Just thought I would share.
He is holding a hand shield - a hand held welding helmet. Go back to 5:51 and you see everyone using the hand shields to safely watch the welding demo.
It's his protective face shield. Remember, never look at the arc without one. Fortunately, the protective shield is part of the package, everything you need to get started is included with your new GE arc welder.
I had to use a protective face shield to watch the movie.
