I recommend anyone wanting to buy an R or a new car for that matter, to watch this video. Not only does it show you the break down (most just sign and can’t even understand the jibber jabber) but it also shows you that No-one should be financing 99% of the car value. As it’s a depreciating asset. Great share , liked for a solid video!
You got a great deal. My dealer wanted $10K over for a 2023 Golf R. Also my trade- 8:56 in was a 2019 Golf R with 5800 miles. They offered me $29K trade-in. The new car was like $58K-$29K or close to my Golf R and $30k to get a 2023 Golf R. Of course I walked out. I went to BMW and they offered me $39K for my Golf R and took $2K off the MSRP of a 2024 M2 that I built and ordered. I waited 2 months and got my M2 for my Golf R and $30k…almost exactly as VW wanted for the 2023 Golf R. In Oregon, there’s no sales tax except .5% on new cars and bikes. The dealer paid the sales tax as part of the deal. I got a great deal because it was my 9th new BMW from them over the past 30 years. All but 2 of the 9 cars were M cars…mostly M3’s (E36, E46, and E92’s), one E39 M5, and now a G87 M2. I will probably go back a try to buy a 2026 Golf R, which should be the last year of Golf R’s before they go electric. In 2025, the haptic buttons are gone from the steering wheel and the infotainment screen will be newer and bigger and faster with illuminated volume and temp controls finally. I do love the M2 though. Keep up the great videos!
Just to make a comparison, i bought a almost full option 2023 R in Belgium europe two months ago. Only options missing is akrapovic exhaust and winter module. MSRP was 71300 euro, i negotiated in the end to 61000 euro + 1 year extra full warranty. I also traded in my peugeot 308 2020 for 17000 euro. So i paid 44000euro for a 71000 msrp car. Was really happy with the deal i got. Totally different situation here i see, interesting video.
I just put a deposit on a white golf r that was already in production. It has the same add ons but they will not let me drop any of them including the mats. No dealer mark up. Mine will be a lease through my company which makes sense because I can write a substantial portion off on my taxes.
Well said with the written points. Do the rough math and the understand how finance works before you get to the dealership. I always finance even if I have to refinance or plan to pay it off Immediately. If it’s in the ballpark then execute the plan. And be happy with it. This is about relationship building
Hey man you got a good deal I paid above MSRP. They had all black 20th anniversary arrive on June 1 and I came back a couple days later at 8:30am to maybe work a deal. I was between golf R and RS3 I would have to order the RS3 6-8months. Long story short I arrived at the dealer basically when they opened. And started talking with the sales manager directly instead Since he was the only one there at the time. He made me aware of a older couple driving down to strike a deal at 9:00am, the older couple apparently did not come to agreement and decided to go to a different dealer with golf R arriving. They did not make the deal on that one either. They Called to make apt to come Saturday 9am. Literally as they were pulling up in a late model Porsche, I was outside with the manager talking and looking over the car. Manager-“Hey, let’s go inside and see if we can make this happen” I’m extremely happy with my decision. I love the car. I never pay over MSRP but I also knew I would have to order or travel to make that happen. It was a spontaneous decision to even go look on June 1. I absolutely love the car + 20th anniversary I think they are only producing 1800 for North America.
Nice breakdown. I’m a VW/Audi salesman at a dealership here in the states. Everything looks right. I also picked up a 20th edition R. Everything is super similar to my situation even as a salesman. Everything looks correct! #twins! Also everything you mentioned about “how” is 100%. Correct. So great to hear this from a consumer.
Thanks for sharing! You broke things down really well. Got my 2023 GTI MK8 S model for MSRP last month and couldn’t be happier. I negotiated with the manager and sales guy for like 3 hours and we worked things out respectfully. They wanted 7500 over originally. I traded in a 2022 Mazda CX-30 Turbo and when it was all said and done the sales guy was talking to me and was like “your trade in is a big reason you got this deal” which makes a lot of sense looking back at it.
Good gosh where do you live where they would charge you 7500 over msrp for an S? I ordered an S and got msrp without any haggling. They also were willing to do a 40th for msrp.
@@basslover352San Francisco Bay Area, cost of living is really expensive here so I suppose they try and take advantage of that. But I’m also hearing of markups all over the place so who knows. I did find an SE near me from a dealer that was offering 1k under msrp but I wanted an S. That info was actually part of what I used to negotiate for the S from this dealership. Also I’m pretty sure if you order and wait for the car it will always be msrp. This was me just walking into dealerships and see what they go for off the lot.
Congratulations on your new car! I enjoyed your detailed breakdown of the 20th AE DSG. I've been looking for one myself for about a month, and it's been quite frustrating. However, I'm not giving up yet.

You said it! If you're happy with the deal, you did good! Even if someone is paying over MSRP, their individual circumstances impact their decision. Make a deal you're OK with and enjoy the new ride. Congrats, bro!!!
Well, that 3rd year / 30k service you paid $165 for, you would pay a lot more if you pay for it separately at the dealership for the 30k service. So, that is a good value that was added. I believe the 30k service is a hefty one for the Golf GTi / R's.
@@keithdillon2792 yup, it is whatever. But I think paying 165 is no doubt worth it up front. My dealership even has a separate 30k service plan to pay separately for $299. Which they say saves owners hundreds if paid for on its own.
