This is the first movie where l felt that Leo played a MAN. Before this, his roles were more of the thin, young, pretty boy type of characters. Great film & story with some great acting - across the board!
Well, he tried, I suppose - and he hits the mark now and then - but he comes across more as an english speaking South African than a proper Rhodesian. There are several white South African accents though - from the Natal accent to the very distinct one of an Afrikaaner speaking english as his second language. I suggest you try watching some of the UA-cam documentaries on the Rhodesian bush war and you will hear that our Rhodesian accent is uniquely different. When I moved to South Africa, some South Africans would ask me if I was American - strange but true.
How Mr. DiCaprio did not win the Oscar for this is criminal. He really did his homework with the history for culture and heritage the accent etc.
