Thx for a great tutorial. I got my JX-8P under the bed as there is no room in my living room studio. I cannot compare the sound one on one now, but it definitely got that a bit murky sound, which is quite special (and pleasent to my ears) with a little bit of resonance. And you can sync the lfo, woohoo! Random function is great too. I really enjoyed programming this plugin today as it brings the spirit of its bigger brother under the bed back. BTW: the chorus noise on the plugin at max is about 10x quiter than on my JX. :)
You don't have to load the sounds one at a time. You can find whole banks as downloadable sysex dumps and fill your plugin with cool patches in one fell swoop. :D
Both settings for MONO TRIGGER switch work with ENV2 selected in the VCA section. I set ENVELOPE-2 Decay and Sustain to around 40. I left Attack and Release at 0. Then when I play fast arpeggio, I can hear that envelope is either being retriggered or only the attack of first note is heard. That's a great presentation of this gem by the way. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
I discover your chanel today : congratulations ! High qualiity content, very attractive and efficient. I used JX-8P in the 80!s and know PG-8X since years. I could load sysex I saved on Commodore 64 and the result is pretty accurate. You've showed us some settings that I ignored and which will be very hlepfull for me. Many thanks !
Don't bother wasting time! The "download links" are no such thing (at least not on the Mac). They only lead to a window showing the folder structure of the .pkg package. There's no way to actually download them. Useless!!!"
Hi Sven. Sorry to hear you're having trouble - it works fine for me on the mac. When you go to the download link, it's hosted on Google Drive, so you hit the download icon at the top right of the screen (it's in black on my mac, I've just re-tried it), and then you should be good to go. It sounds like you're navigating through the .zip file in the white section at the centre of the page (which is Google Drive's default behaviour).
Excellent video. I am looking for some synth VST’s for a project that I am doing that’s very 80’s- early 90’s Black Sabbath with a touch of less proggy Maiden and some 80’s Judas Priest. I have a good Hammond B3 I like, and some pretty decent strings sounds, I am looking for the other stuff. I have reason rack and dig Europa and Thor but they are too modern. I’ve tried the Full Bucket 7999 since I know Geoff Nichols used a DW-8000 but I haven’t heard anything that fits, it all sounds one dimensional.
Seems like a cool plugin, looks like it doesn't come with any sounds though. Just downloaded it for windows and there's no premade sounds you can load. Sad that it's no longer supported, I guess?
If you download a bank from the links in the description then you can save them inside Cubase and you'll have presets - there's a vast range of them to download on the 'net because of the compatibility with the Roland JX-8p.
You have to save a program for the MIDI learn data to be saved - it's not saved with the synth's state (i.e. with a Cubase project), you need to save the program (I just press the Program>Write blue button at the top), and then it's saved with the song in Cubase. If you want to keep a set of MIDI mappings to start with, then if you save the preset to disk (I saved a PG-8x preset), then the mappings are saved on there - you can then open that when you create a new PG8x instance and use that to start as the mappings will be preserved. HTH
I'm having problem with installing as well. I put the vst file in the right folder but Logic doesn't find it. I tried from the plugin manager as well but with no success.@@musictechtuition
love this, Blancemange's Stephen Luscombe used this on believe you me album and its corresponding tour of 1985. one question, how can you get it to run with a midi controller keyboard like the m-audio keyboards I can def hear the brassy synth sounds and synth string pad sounds from "what's your problem" after hearing that video
I think the JX-8P was hugely popular when it was released, despite the programming being harder (without the optional programmer) than "true" analogue keyboards... certainly it was popular in my school (we had one of them, an SH-101 and maybe a TX7.... anyway! On the keyboard front, it should be possible to just run MIDI monitor in Cubase and that will pass the MIDI through to the PG8x so you can play it?
When you go to the google drive site to download the file, you need to click the download icon (downward facing arrow) at the top right of the screen - ignore the white section at the centre of the page. Then you'll get a zip file you can unzip on your local computer with the plug-in in it.
for some reason when I download the plugin I can't get any sound from it. I have the presets loaded. I try and play on the keyboard and nothing happens. I am using M1 Mac OS Big Sur
Are you seeing MIDI activity in the PG window (little "LED" at the top of the window, in the Cubase part of the window rather than PG specifically) when you play notes on the keyboard?
Hi, I have a problem :( i can assign midi settings to any parameter but even though i use the "write value" and "make default" buttons, after i close the vst and open it again, it doesn't saved my midi mapping, idk why. I have even press "Save" after all the process, but the problem persists :( what can i do? Is it possible to midi mapping the vst (per banks or patches) so everytime i open it the midi mapping is there as i left it?
Hi. If by "close the VST and open it again" you mean just close the edit window (rather than unloading the PG8x and creating a new one) then the mapping is being remembered fine for me. When you create a new PG8x it doesn't remember that mapping. BUT if you save the sound as a PG8x preset (from the save button) then the CC mapping is loaded when you load the preset in a new instance of PG8x.
@@musictechtuition Thanks for the response. That's the thing :( even though I save the mapping as a preset or as a bank, when I close the vst (not just the window) and open it again in a new instance, load the preset that i saved but the mapping hasn't saved
Brilliant breakdown, thank you for sharing

Does anyone know if it works in mac M1 ?
It does (I'm currently using it on one), but only with Cubase in Rosetta mode.

Sir thank you so much this series you have start the overview and the mapping of the free synths its amazing
IGOR'S THEME was made with Roland JX-8P
Ong? 😳
@Patrick Bateman lol
Thank you , I finally found a good emulation of one of my favourite synths ever!

This looks promising! I'll have to watch it later though, as my evening meal is about to be ready 🙂
"Here we have an interesting mosquito sound"... had a little chuckle, it totally sounds like a mosquito. Nice overview!

I once had a Roland JX8P and the PG8X plugin definitely brings back memories. Sounds really good, too.

There are a few videos on youtube by users who have created their own presets and give links to them.
I’ve had this VST for quite a few years now. It sounds absolutely huge and rich. It sounds even better than much of the Arturia stuff
really????? :0 i have this vst, but i always thought the arturia synths had much more quality (never proved it tho)
@@pimentocheese618 it def sounds richer and ‘bigger’ to my ears than at least Arturia Analog Lab. That’s the only Arturia plugin I own though
how did you get the vst
@@aJ-bw2sw downloaded it my man
@@pimentocheese618 do you have a link to download it? Thanks!

Do you know how to save midi mapping? Every time i open a new instance my saved mappings have gone.
