- I have a “pick trick” I’ve developed over the years. Can you see it? I love both finger style and plectrum / pick. It adds versatility and more sounds.
I thought I was so weird for occasionally taking my thumb off the back of the neck, but here I see a master doing it. 😁
Great! Thanks. Yes it feels natural and allows for greater mobility right? 👍🏻😊
Cool move between the pick and fingers, but also cool was the pickup selector switch move. Not just different tones with the pick or fingers, but pickups too. Thanks for sharing this one, Tony.
Yes indeed. I typically switch to the straight P Bass (middle) pick up with the pick, and the bridge (or blend of the bridge and middle PUs) with finger style. 👍🏻🤩
As much as I love finger (and nearly exclusively use it), if I want to get that punchy Chris Squire sound like what he got out of his 'backer, gotta use a pick. Gotta use a pick, and gotta slightly hit it with the edge of your thumb as you pick it, so you almost mute it, giving it kind of that pinch harmonic overtone. Watched him talking about it in an interview in the either late 80s or early 90s, blew my mind.
THAT, to me, is what a pick is good for.
Indeed you’re right. And the pick can do many other things too. A very versatile tool.
Fingers too. The more the merrier! 🤩👍🏻
The more diverse and adaptable, the better as a musician. Always insightful and musical here man. Cheers
Great. Thank you. Agreed. I like the different sound options. Whatever suits the music. 👍🏻😊
Hi Tony, a while back I said in a message that your signature bass was next on my list, it arrived tonight, lake Placid blue, what a great bass. Cheers.
That’s great to hear!! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine. 💙👏🏻
@@FretlessMonster cheers, loving it so far, it’s first gig is Sunday
Tony Franklin благодарю за удивительное исполнение. Всех благ Вам.
The fretless bass is so expressive and vocal, especially in the hands of a master!
Thanks so much. I love the range and versatility of the Fretless bass.
@@FretlessMonster Too bad more people don't play it
The late Ben Woods who performed on Jason Becker's last album and who sadly died of cancer in September 2022, he did videos of his flamenco playing using his fingers as a pick, so he could switch between that sound and style to the usual finger picked / hybrid approach etc. Some purists gave him a hard time over it, but he rightly did not care as it sounds great and is useful! Break the rules if it works better! Here are two examples from his YT channel ua-cam.com/video/gtnfsBDB9B8/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/PelgN1nEsqU/v-deo.html . He is more known for his FlaMetal creation, of combining flamenco with Metal and doing a lot of cover versions in that way, which were really great.
Thanks for that
@@FretlessMonster You're welcome Tony! Always love to see innovators like your good self.
Yes! why choose?
👍👏👍👏👍👏👍
👍🏻👍🏻🤩🤩
I do the same thing. I favour the pick, but often switch between pick and fingers several times during one song.
Very cool. I love having the versatility 👍🏻🤩👏🏻
Such a great tone either pick of fingers! 👏
Thank you.
It’s all in the hands… umm, the pick. Hmm 🤔
Hahaha. 😂
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hope to see you @NAMM2023.
I plan to be there. 👍🏻
Hope to see you on Friday
There is so many ways to play one's fretless bass. BUT! Fretless players get stuck at Jaco (I knew Jaco from Florida, another story) and don't move to other great sounds until they get that. They will never get that, learn from Jaco, but he was strictly a jazz player. Give me my 5-string fretless, a pick and some overdrive and I WILL ROCK YOU!
I love it! Fretless is indeed a very versatile instrument
So now the master has introduced sleight of hand magic moving the pick to third and fourth fingers maybe? Too hard for me I just hold it in my teeth😂
Haha. I’m full of tricks. 🤣
Between the teeth works too.
Tones with slow attack with fingers and tones with fast attack with nail pick ? How do you control two different fast and slow tones? Does it depend on right hand( finger or pick)?
I honestly don’t think about it. I know the various techniques “speak” in a certain way.. so I just play. 👍🏻🙃
The upstrokes of the pick almost sound like echo. That’s not a bad thing at all.
👍🏻🤩👏🏻
Curious to see if you've tried out the single-finger picking that's been rising as the equivalency of the pick
No. I’m too stuck in my ways.
I can't use a pick to play out of a wet paper bag. Right hand palm muting is a good tool. When it comes to picks though TF has it down packed. Scott Whitley of Big Country also stresses the importance of using a pick, which is, kinda required for certain styles of music.
Thanks for that.
It’s definitely required for certain styles and sounds. I like having the option.
more Technic more tools for expression, Pick is very and punchy but personally, that mellow fretless finger style legato notes with the vibrato is one my most beloved sounds in the world
I agree. It’s a beautiful sound - like no other. But it doesn’t fit for every style of music. I love having the versatility 👏🏻🤩
bet you cant pick youre nose at the same time , ahahhhhe I could never use or hold a plectrum to play ?? although using my nails gave my songs and arrangements a different sound xxx
😂😂
I’ve never tried that!!
I sometimes use my nails too.
The more sounds the better.
@@FretlessMonster 🥰 Bass Guitar was my first at school, i could scream and make a lot of noise, eheheha
So are you using a pick? 😄
Yes. Sometimes. 🤩🤷♂️😂👍🏻
@@FretlessMonster excellent! You're a ninja bass player!
i ended using my fingers. cause all the guitar players kept taking my picks. even though i used a really heavy pick. have a good day.
Haha. Those bloody guitarists!
Bottom line, serve the song.👍
Bingo!! 100%!
Ну вот. Очередной лентяй, которому было лень таскать с собой контрабас. Лабает теперь на басухе безладовой =)
I played double bass in my teens. Mostly orchestral. Electric Fretless is my thing. I could never truly play or feel at ease on upright. I can be fully myself on electric Fretless 🙏🏻🤩
@@FretlessMonster I think fretless strings provide player with freedom to get excellent sound. You do not limited to tempered notes.
