  • Here is my first of a few planned videos comparing Audiobro's La Scoring Strings with East West's Hollywood Strings.
This video takes a look at the loading times, memory use and general overview about what comes with each.

When you're ABing you really need to match volume level. People generally prefer the louder of two similar sounds. This is why level matching is so important when applying compression to tracks or a mix. Thanks for the vid.

Great videos! I started with the 1h cinebrass video and I'm going through them all now and enjoying every minute. I've been making electronic music for many years but I'm also making more game music now with orchestral stuff. I've got the EWSOG library but I'm considering additional strings and brass so this is worth gold to me. Not only that, your methods to present the content gives teaches me a LOT about the compositions so I'm really thankful that you present it in the way you do.

LASS sounds good when I use a multiband compressor (I limit the highs on the violins to lessen the harshness/ "sandy-ness"). I just love its out of tune effect since it makes it sound like the real thing. It reminds me of my high school's string ensemble I used to be with.
I prefer dry samples then put tube compressor and reverb later during mixing process.
note: This is a novice speaking. I started using these only a few months ago.

    • @AhrkFinTey
      @AhrkFinTey 9 років тому +3

You'll want to use sordino strings if you want it to be less harsh. You can even combine sordino and non-sordino, something I personally love doing.

I'm working in film music and I'm going to buy a string library soon, I haven't decided yet but I wanted to ask you what do you feel about Cinematic Strings? have you had the chance to use it? and at the end of all, wich is your favorite string library?

  • @RampantMusik

I like that LASS is pretty dry so I can add my own reverb, whereas Hollywood Strings (and EastWest's previous entry, Symphonic Orchestra) are recorded with the hall's reverb -- which may or may not blend well with other instrument libraries.

I think what makes the LASS library so unique is that they're NOT using the auto tune thing, that way all chords and harmonics sound so much more authentic and even more beautiful because it's not perfectly in tune. I'm using LASS Lite and I'm totally happy with it, there are some notes that are bit worse out of tune but you can fix all these single notes with the tune corrector in the interface.

Great video man, Thank you so much for taking your time to do this. I've been dying to get my hands on HS for some time now, I was under the impression it was the perfect solution to otherwise 'twangy and electronic' sounding string packages.I wanted something user friendly that required as little actual programming as possible. Now after watching this i realise that symphobia covers the most part and although debatably warmer sounding, LASS is def more than capable+better value. Thanks again

Daniel just wondering what your thoughts are to the new East West Composer Cloud? I have bought into the monthly one to see how it all goes. I have found some libraries a bit pointless like the Scoring Tools.

  • @DJLA
    @DJLA  13 років тому

@allvange I am sorry if it wasnt clear. I think HS has a more 'premixed' sound and sounds great with Symphobia but when you have a fully orchestrated track the difference would be so minimal it would make more sense to use the patches that take up the least amount of processing power.

Hello Daniel and all other peeps!
Thanks alot for your great videos. I have a question: What is your
routing? Don't you have several outputs from your Kontakt 5? Where do
you do the mixing? You see, my problem is that I've got one channel with
MIDI that goes to the Kontakt 5, and from there I have a specific
output that a specific audio track can take audio from. So for example,
when I play something on a trumpet, it first reads the MIDI from the
trumpet MIDI track, sends that to the Kontakt 5 track, the Kontakt 5
sends audio via a specific output to the trumpet audio track. This is
great because it gives me lots of control and makes it easy to mix. The
issue is however when I try to solo the trumpet. If I solo the MIDI
track only, no sound is coming out. Same happens if I solo the audio
track only as well. I have to solo them both for it to work! This is a
big problem, and I can't find a way to solve it! Do you have any ideas?
Should I maybe change my routing? How do you route your signals? Do you
    mix in Kontakt?
    Best regards // Elias

I am perplexed reading some stupid posts criticizing what you Daniel make, some Mr. Nobody criticizes you because some HD issue without any respect whatsoever on what you do and what makes you such a professional programmer with a heavy portfolio to rely on. I don't know if you are an accomplished real composer or even a full developed keyboard player but for sure, and for what I see on your well dedicated-detailed videos and demos, you do know what in the hell is that you do, for your clients and for yourself. KUDOS on that and keep doing what you do, no doubt, you are in the right track.!!!!

Thanks, this video was very helpful, i been waiting to hear the difference clearlly, overall i think i prefer LASS because of the memory and the fact it runs within Kontakt, i too have 6GB ram and when running around 80-100 tracks for my projects, Play takes up way too much memory, and loading times are poor, though soundwise, both sound very professional.. i swear everytime i watch your video's though, you inspire me to go and compose straight away, great stuff man, thanks again.

I have much more ram than you on my PC.. (16 gigs) and I am having a problem with LA scoring strings where when using the large combis the sustained notes are cutting off abruptly, and when I cut down the number of parts playing it seems to fix it. I need to be able to use these large combis to get the sound I desire. I wonder what is causing the script to cut off the notes. It happens on the divisi legato multis.

Great comparison, thanx for doing this. Since my use would be for my own music (I don't score for other people, work under time constraints, manage giant projects, etc) the similarity in the libraries is actually a plus. I would expect that LASS and HS would both benefit from the personal tweeking we'd all apply in mixing, so by the time that's done either one would sound great. The load time does seem to be a deterrent, especially at the EW price. I'm confident that the LASS would suffice.

The reason the kontakt patches seem to take up less memory is because you have Kontakt set to load a small percentage of each sample, in the "Instrument preload buffer size" in the preferences. Try disabling this option and you will see a significant increase in memory being taken up by the very same patch.
This is for those who make use of the KMS but don't want to load full samples to it. The first few kB of the sample is loaded into memory and once triggered, the rest is streamed from disk.
