  • It was a very good year. I hope it's not too much to ask that you watch the whole video before commenting.
    Yes, I should have noticed the model number on those small UPSes.
    Of the stuff not fully shown in the video:
    1. After a marathon of pin straightening, nearly all the PCI video cards work. Most of those that don't have the same defect, in that they output perfect video in *purple*! I looked for obviously broken solder joints and didn't find any. One was fatally damaged before I got it (chips ripped loose or "skewed" on the board) and another has bad video RAM. Two others didn't output any video (though I have found certain older PCI video cards won't work right in newer computers -- maybe timing sensitivity or speed-sensitive routines in their video BIOSes?). I'll try those in older computers.
    2. I haven't tested the floppy drives yet.
    3. All the wireless routers and laptop power supplies work.
    4. The Peavey amplifier works perfectly, but did you expect any less? Tanks aren't built as well as it was!
    5. I have no idea about the "PC Air Conditioner" thing. It's not like anyone cares, up until the point that someone indicates such in the comments. :-P
    6. I still haven't checked to see if those Liebert UPSes isolate the battery from the AC power powerline or not.
    7. The solar panel works *perfectly*. It was very obviously miswired. I think it's a 20 watt panel, and at times it has exceeded that figure.

    As much as I hate to say it, those Optiplex GX280 systems are pretty worthless. They're painfully limited in terms of CPU support. A Pentium 4 650 seems to be pretty much the top end (and ought to be essentially free these days), although the BIOS doesn't properly/fully support it. Speaking of CPUs and the BIOS: there appears to be support for some Cedar Mill chips within. I've even read of people using them elsewhere online. I don't have a good selection of Cedar Mill era chips and those that I do have were rejected (orange power LED of doom at POST). Pentium D CPUs are not supported due to hardware limits.
    So far I've installed several different operating systems on them. They'll probably end up being used as "playgrounds" for a while, and then I'll likely send them on down the road.

    I'm sorry, but I am going to comment at this point with this: Your videos are NOT boring. I find them helpful, as someone who works on computers for fun, and for some pocket change. I also enjoy your wit, and love that you are quite articulate in a day of "dummied down" content. Please keep making videos. I love most of what you produce, as I love tinkering with the same things you do. :-)

    A long time ago, upon getting my first UPS, the system I had acquired it for didn't like the modified square wave output. It was a Compaq Proliant 800 (Pentium Pro) server with an AT style (but maybe a proprietary pinout) power supply. Whenever the UPS switched to battery, the power supply would start switching on and off repeatedly for about 15 seconds, then finally stay on. Returned that UPS to the store, picked up an APC brand "BackUPS" unit, and it had the same problem.
    Since that time, it's still the only machine I've personally encountered that problem with, but nowadays (as you know) it's pretty easy to get hold of real sine wave UPSes that just need batteries replaced.
    I still use a Prescott GX270 as an office machine, and have upgraded it's video to support accelerated H.264 video playback. It's quite comfortable to use on the web IMO, but admittedly it has aged beyond the point where it makes sense to buy them anymore. Core2 machines are now probably the sweet spot for cheap 2nd hand PCs.

    This video just made my day. Thanks uxwbill! Glad to see you scored a solid treasure trove, this year. Also, nothing beats the G5 case. That is well worth the 10 bucks, alone. I keep toying around with the idea of acquiring a case and modifying it for use with ATX parts.

    Glad to see you back! I know your videos aren't meant to be a guide per se, but they were spiritual supports for my own tinkering with older systems. I do have to say, though, my intentions with the old P4 systems I found was for practice so I could modify and tinker with my main desktop rig with confidence while (potentially, though never actually) bricking the practice machines. On a side note, I'm an Iowa native and seeing the Casey's cups floating through your videos at random do give me a warm, tingly feeling from time to time.

    Just to restore the balance, and to reassure you that we are still out here, I read the video description before watching! :P Also you are right about the Dual processor G5s having more memory slots, I have a dual processor model with 6GB of Ram in the form of 6 x 1GB sticks. Still quite capable today albeit running out of date software. they also make a very good foot stool.......

    My god, you did do well bill :-D.
    And somehow i knew the odd dell computer or two would sneak back home with you, i was not suprised lol.
    Being the nasty person i am, the apple machine would find it's mobo in the nearest dumpster and a p.c mobo would be fitted, i have no interest in apple products, but that case looked interesting.
    The bucket of mains sockets are a bargain, suppliers love to overcharge for basic electrical outlets, shame there wasn't a few reels of cable going for a song.
    Those multimeters look cute, and fairly accurate, they are not part of the spending day but i had to comment :-D.

    • @uxwbill

      I'm not a big fan of extensively modifying old computer cases for use with contemporary off the shelf parts. It's probably a result of my interest in vintage computers. That said, if a standard motherboard would just drop in, I'd be very tempted.
      I'm not sure now where I first learned of those meters. I got in pretty early, before sellers realized what a hot seller they were and cranked up the prices. They're still pretty cheap all over eBay and do have a bit more circuit protection than the Victor VC921. Even at the slightly higher prices, they're still fantastic value for the money.

I frequent hamfests such as HamCom and now have a couple of rooms full of various kinds of audio equipment, televisions, Dell computers, ham gear, and a couple of APC uninterruptable power supplies I found on the curb. A local mom and pop stereo repair shop was closing and I ended up with many goodies that will make great projects for either parts or repairs

    We had 2 of of the SUA-2200 UPSs powering the servers/switches. Batteries died on one, so we transferred the whole load to the other; then those batteries died, and there was no UPS. Shortly after, we ended up virtualizing our servers, adding a VNX SAN and blade servers and a 5 kW (IIRC) Liebert UPS (along with a 5-ton Liebert air conditioner). From what I understand, Liebert/Emerson (now Vertiv) made great products. No non-wear issues with the UPS, only issues with A/C were environmental. So I'm not surprised that the small/cheap Liebert UPS in this video was able to regulate voltage!

    lots of goodies this year! for the solar setup, you may want to try finding a 1000W pure sine wave inverter I bought one from ebay (auction style as it was cheaper) branded as Accurate Tools. It provides about 8.33A to play with certainly enough to run a few computers. I've used mine to power a garage door opener and some lights. if you could find a cheap one, they are certainly worth the money.

    The thing that I like about the Mac is the case; handsome, yet minimalist. Compare it to the bland but functional "name brand" PCs, or the exuberant styling of the "gamer" PCs and it holds up, even today.

    • @Browningate
      @Browningate 6 років тому

      Absolutely. As gutless and frustrating as the computer is to use today, it has probably one of the all-time greatest PC cases ever made. It's a shame that an inordinate amount of casemodding is required to install a normal-sized ATX/MicroATX board and power supply; otherwise, I'd still have one.

      Yes, I really like them. I have given some thought to replacing the SUA1500 and 1000 in my live streaming studio with this one. Not sure if I will -- the way things are now, I can leave all the video stuff shut off if I'm only doing audio stuff. The SUA1500 also has an AP9618 management card in it, and I'm not going to remove it.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  6 років тому +1

      I've already got a system that claims to be running a beta version of Fx Quantum. (It's been on the beta update channel ever since I set it up.)
      Performance seems better, but it's come at the high price of decimating what made Firefox so great in the first place: its extensions system. And any Groanium/Blink derived browser *still* just stomps it right into the ground. If I didn't utterly despise the, ah, "inventive" UI and behavior of every Groanium based browser (including Google Groan itself) I'd probably be using it just like everyone else.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  6 років тому +1

      As touched upon in the video, no. The large APC has a true sine wave inverter: it matches or exceeds the quality of AC power delivered by your electrical utility.
      The Power Macintosh G5 would never notice any difference if attached to a true sine wave inverter or UPS, and it would run perfectly.

    The old GE radio? Look closer as the switch: AM - FM - PS SCAN. At least I think that's PS as it swings past: Public Service.
    I'm not surprised that the UPS provides cleaner AC than the power company. I have a 300 watt pure sine wave (PSW) inverter from Eastwood (mostly automotive things), a 500 watt PSW and two 2000 watt PSW inverters by Reliable Electric (generic Chinese manufacturer, basic ugly cases but the inverters run fine). Even had one of the 2000 watt inverters unintentionally loaded to the max by the "1100 watt" microwave oven that tested to be drawing almost 1900 watts from the AC outlet and the inverter survived that less-than-friendly load - but the microwave now has a "Do NOT use when on inverter" sign on it. Power from the local co-op has a sharp corner on the trailing edge of the positive and negative peaks of the .sine wave. I purchased a DSO138 'scope kit to have a safe tool for checking AC waveforms: plastic case and runs on 9 volts DC using a boost converter from a 5 volt powerbank. That means the entire thing can be floating (useful when the "ground" on some modified square wave inverters is at half of the output voltage).
    The 2000 watt inverters are part of my solar-charged "Wait until daylight" backup system for the frequent but usually short (under 3 hours) power outages we have. The backup system uses a 250 watt solar panel to keep a 12 volt, 420AH battery bank charged and that can provide 8 to 20 hours of limited essential power depending on the season: fridge, LED lights, charge phones, gas furnace in winter for a few hours. For longer outages, I have another 1500 watts of solar panels that I can put out and I have a 1600 watt inverter generator to charge the batteries on the days there is no sun (about a gallon of gas/day).
    I very much agree with your "bigger is better" on UPS selection. The 55" plasma TV, cable box, Android TV box, DVD burner, etc, are on a 1325VA, 810 watt PSW Cyberpower UPS. It's rated for 3 minutes at full load and 9 minutes at half load but it ran the TV and cable box for the last 20 minutes of the Superbowl when the Falcons played and my wife just had to watch :-) Our power was off for 3 hours that time and I plugged a USB LED into a powerbank to provide long term light while she watched TV and then picked up a book.
    newegg.com has had multiple sales on the small APC Back-UPS BGE70M and BGE90M with them being $20 delivered (cheaper than the replacement battery). The BGE70M is 75 watts, 125VA, 21 minutes at 75 watts but but is designed for long run at low power: 75 minutes at 25 watts. The BGE90M is 36 minutes at 75 watts but 2 hours at 25 watts. Where are these useful? Providing the 14 watts for the Uverse router and the base unit of the cordless phones for a long time. Providing the 16 watts for the high speed router and the 24 port ethernet switch. Providing the 15 watts for the old Dell D620 that monitors the solar system. In each case, there's more than an hour of backup for $20. The one that powers the base unit for the house alarm system, the talking caller ID and an LED nightlight runs about 7 hours because it's so lightly loaded (that nightlight comes on early when there are no other lights in the room ;-)
    I managed to get to the Dayton Hamfest one time, only because the company wanted me in Cincinnati the following Monday and my wife had family just over the line in Kentucky. I rented a car and drove out to spend the evening and night with family and then left early the next morning to drive to Dayton. Saw much that I wanted but was limited to what I could get back home on a plane :-(

    Those G5's will be, and are already starting to become, a collectors item. Nice thing about Tiger is at least you will still have the Classic environment to use with a G5, though I personally prefer Leopard on a G5 and just stick to a pure OS9 with a G3 or G4. Great machines for old school PowerPC gaming, or could still do video editing with imovie 06 or something pretty well. Or if you really wanted to get crazy with it, hackintosh it!

      Sometimes, yes. You can find instructions elsewhere on the web that will let you enter the service mode and adjust the float charging voltage.

    7. 12:59 - I will also agree with that. Apple could have done so much more with such a powerful processor. Also, love the Mac case.

      2:15 why would the battery not be isolated from the main power? Is it just charging on a voltage drop. Seems highly sketchy and not very useful for using a UPS as surge protection.

      In order, mostly:
      Air suspension was an option on the Grand Marquis. My grandparents had a few so equipped. This car doesn't have it, and I'd personally rather not have it. It only serves to become a headache over time and requires special care and feeding along the way. (I think one could get it even on the Crown Vics.)
      Most of those outlets and some of the switches will find use in the new garage.
      The race was well and truly on in the 1980s to make video cameras smaller and more practical. Sony's self contained Video8 Handycam was just around the corner when this Sharp camera was made.
      I still use a few Pentium 4 systems to do various things, but I'm starting to think about phasing the ones in server roles out. (There's even a Socket 423 system in daily use here.) The desktops will likely stay around until I just can't do anything with them any longer.
      I've long felt that Apple, who started out doing so well with the whole PowerPC to Intel transition, royally bungled it shortly afterward. Leopard, especially the server version, was a ridiculously buggy OS. It got better after several point releases, but still wasn't great. Even if it had been available only to higher end G4 or perhaps even only G5 users, the PowerPC Macintoshes should have received a release of Snow Leopard.
      The "Candyham" focuses, but takes its own sweet time doing so. Although I'm debating whether it's a mechanical or electronic issue, it wasn't that slow when new.
      With a little bit of diddling around, I reached a point where even that single G5 would have been an acceptable existence, had no other computer been available.

    • @HobertMcFarlandtechandcargeek
      @HobertMcFarlandtechandcargeek 6 років тому

      I agree that having the air suspension would likely be a pain. But, then again, it does give a floaty feel.
      Hell, that's still the battle today with other things than cameras. Although, I guess I wouldn't want to use a big brick of a camera with little more than a lens.
      My oldest computer right now is a Celeron D, and it was a server at some point, although it got retired earlier this week. Besides, P4s will still have *MAYBE* a purpose in ten years. While a computer can grow old, it can still be used for it's intended use - overheating and causing headaches (Prescott) and whatever else P4s were mean't to do.
      Apple had called the Intel "modern", but they could have modified the architecture to make their PowerPCs (especially the G5) even more modern. As for the bugginess of the Leopard OS on PowerPC, I agree they could have probably made it a hell of a lot faster if they did their jobs as they were supposed to. But then again, nowadays especially, they could put their brand on anything lackluster and sell a crap ton, but I also agree that Snow Leopard should have at least had a chance. It would have likely worked a lot better.
      Had the chance, I would have likely bought it too. Even if the damn thing didn't start up, I would love to have that case (just because it looks so DAMN good)

    • @uxwbill

      I could only theorize about why the battery and its charging circuit aren't line isolated. To my thinking, it seems like that would be a more difficult approach.
      So, here's my theory: some UPSes "reuse" the inverter circuitry to charge the battery when idle. While it's possible to do this -- and in fact APC does exactly this with their Smart UPS product line, where they specifically call out that "live" battery replacement is a "safe procedure isolated from hazards" -- perhaps not all manufacturers implement the same safety aspects.
      I still haven't tested these to see if Emerson/Liebert is telling the truth. I can't imagine why they wouldn't be. I have some very old Best Power Patriot SPS units whose battery circuits are *definitely* directly line connected.

    As for vintage Sharp Camcorder, for an early technology before they switch to either CCD or to whatever the technology this is, they use Vidicon Color Tube which has been done since around in the 70's by Japanese Manufacture in my guest.
    For Sony CV-2000, these are one of the early technology that was introduced in the 60's around in 1965, they use reel-to-reel tape machines to record on Monochrome and it is record-able better than to bother the 8 Milometer Film Cameras. For CV-2000 from Sony, the camcorder has the standard monochrome Vidicon Tube to film on anywhere. Following up into the late 60's to early 70's in my guest, Sony AV-5000 the EIAJ Color along with the Color Camcorder with the Vidicon Color Tube that you can record on color. There aresome stations back in the day they use the technology to make the video and broadcast the video on TV on anywhere.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  6 років тому +1

      The best answer I have for you is that ultimately, the world is really analog. I've had *several* BTX Dell systems fail to finish POSTing with all manner of strange behavior. Removing and reconnecting the PATA optical drive (and sometimes the motherboard end of the connection as well) fixed it *every* time. A few times, I could get into system setup and saw a corrupted device ID string. This suggested bits were being thrown away somewhere, probably due to faulty electrical contacts.
      Of course, the drive could always be defective and holding a line on the bus down, thus stalling the system.

      It's not the different chassis that came as a surprise -- it's that Dell retooled everything to make a BTX variant as the technological sun was fast setting on the GX280's platform. All its other variations are ATX systems. I suspect some major buyer wanted more, as the overhead to retool and redesign is significant.

      I guess that's a little better than nothing. Great big Hunk of Aluminium machined into a work of art, top end over-engineered design of every component possible, incredibly over priced to make the Mac crowd feel smug about being able to afford what the unwashed Windows scum sometimes get to see through a plate glass window (if we are lucky), and they stick a dead dog of a graphic card after all that. Macs look great but are nothing special, and that's being generous.

    • @uxwbill

      One has to look at it through an appropriate historical lens. At the same time this would have been new, I bought a Dell Latitude D800 brand new with Go Fx5200 graphics. At the time, that was only a few notches down from the best graphics hardware Dell offered on that model. (As I remember, I could have gotten an Fx 5500 or Quadro of some description.)
      I was never unhappy with the Go Fx5200's performance, and I'm sure that if I had purchased a Power Mac G5 instead, I would still have been perfectly happy with the desktop Fx5200 card.

    I suspect the one Dell that supports DDR2 memory would also support a dual core P4 chip. As for the other one, probably not. That old amp you got is kind of sweet. Those outlets and switches you picked up, well I don't think you'll have to buy one in the near future. The G5 Power Mac, part of the problem is that it only has one memory channel. Most DDR memory ran at a maximum of 400Mhz. To get the full 800 you'll need to run a dual channel configuration. Good haul....

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill  6 років тому +1

      The Pentium D is two Pentium 4 cores in one physical package. If you really do have a 64-bit CPU, there is no reason why a 64-bit OS shouldn't work. I dropped a Pentium 4 650 (itself ousted from an Optiplex GX620 that got a Pentium D) into one of the GX280s and it has run 64-bit Linux without a problem. The original Pentium 4 530 was only 32-bit capable.
      (Windows 8.1 and 10 are notable exceptions: the 64-bit versions require processor-resident instructions that didn't appear until after Prescott's time in the sun.)

      The problem is likely caused by faulty surface mounted capacitors. These were a common problem in late 1980s through mid 1990s Handycam models. The capacitors leak corrosive material on to the circuit board, which will eventually damage it.

    I didn't think that inverter would be able to handle that G5. I also forgot to mention that my poor G5, a 2.3 Dual core PCIe machine, needs a new logic board too. I'm considering finding a decent older Mac Pro to replace it with, as they tend to be more long lived. I actually used that machine as my primary desktop for several years before moving on to the modern Intel machine era. As much affection and love as I have for tower desktops, I do really love my iMac, but things like adding an SSD to the machine are easier said than done. At least its a 27in machine, so the RAM is VERY easily accessed.

    I do think it is pretty sad that PPC macs aren't as usable anymore as they once were, given that technically speaking Bill they're not actually "that" old esp when ye consider ye can run Windows 10 on the same age hardware with enough RAM and a decent dual-core CPU.
    And still get most current software titles, HD/4K and 3D rendering might be a little bit of a struggle for those older machines but ye get ma point.
    I have several older Macintosh's, the 2006 Powerbook G4 that was given to me by my uncle (still a very nice machine, backlit keyboard and everything which is brighter than my current Toshiba one LOL), a late 2003 iMac G4 20' 1.25Ghz.
    However as ye say it's just the change in architecture and the fact Apple is famous for dropping support when they change platforms, and for very good reasons I suppose after a couple of years given they're target audience of creatives and the fact that most Apple people tend to upgrade fairly frequently.
    But it is still a sad commentary, in fact there is alot ye can still do, music editing, photoshop, some lighter artistic/3D rendering work using maybe an older version of Maya or something.
    Heck I might even have mentioned this but even though I don't think he's developing it anymore Mr. Gecko's Youview player will even let ye watch UA-cam HD usingg Quicktime rather than HTML5 on PPC macs and it works astonishingly well I've found give it a shot if yer ever board.
    But the lack of a decent modern browser really hurts these machines alot, and I do like the form factors of some of em and wish Apple would offer a white Mac again atleast as an option, they make colored iPhones and everything else so why not the Macs?
    I suppose it's just the reality of changing technology I mean these are 15 year old machines now, but given the point I made above just seems inexcusable why somebody atleast can't pull a browser off esp with all the retro collector's of Macs starting to pop up.

    I know quite a bit about public address systems if you are confused about wiring it together. I have videos about 70 and 25 volt speakers and how I setup my system at home. 70 and 25 volt speakers have wattage taps on a transformer that you select which varies with different brands such as Atlas Sound, Lowell, Bogen, and Quam. If you need to combine a stereo signal you can get an RCA combiner to feed to aux 1 and 2. You can get fancy and make an intercom system using a landline phone and have it feed into the microphone terminals on the mixer amplifier. I also have a video on how to make an intercom system using landline phone with a wiring diagram. This is the link to the video, ua-cam.com/video/X43QkAICb6A/v-deo.html
