New Zealand is my home, and this tragedy has been a heartbreaking eye opener for all of us, but one message is emerging: we stand together, and we are going to seek change for a stronger, more united country that values every one of its citizens. Thanks for your wonderful message Stephen, and we hope you come down and visit us at a later date.

@Wesley Buirkle Actually recent incidents in Nigeria in which Muslim Fulani militants murdered a total of 23 Christians are just part of a large category of massacres ignored by the mainstream media. But it’s not fair to say the media couldn’t care less about them.
They care very much about ignoring them.
Because these incidents involve the wrong people killing and the right people killed.it does make sense that the Christchurch shooting would receive more coverage than a Nigerian massacre. New Zealand is part of the West and the Anglosphere, as are we, and that the nation is strikingly peaceful with an extremely low murder rate makes the carnage stand out; in contrast, violence is rife in Africa. According to the Baptist Press, approximately 6,000 Christians were murdered last year alone (as of August 6) in Nigeria “by jihadist Fulani herdsmen aided by resurging Boko Haram terrorists.”This is more journalistic malpractice at large!

I'm an American living in Auckland. The terrorist attack has obviously hit everyone here really hard. But if there was one good thing that came of it, it was the overwhelming response from the people and the government -- an unequivocal message of love and inclusion.
The Maori people have performed emotional hakas (traditional dances that symbolize, in part, community and protection) and have made "kia kaha" (stay strong) a rallying cry for the whole country. Jacinda Ardern said "They are us," words that are now seen on the cover of the New Zealand Herald, on banners and posters of support, in social media posts and in hashtags. I believe that these three words will be spoken by kiwis for generations to come.
This is how every country should respond to such abhorrent acts. Being in this country at this time, I am feeling the immense power of love and inclusion. I am witnessing how that towering force can expose these acts of terror for what they really are: the cowardly, meek acts of scared little men.
What's true in New Zealand is true in America. The Muslim community is our community. They are us. We are all in this together.

    • @arkhadipustaka_
      @arkhadipustaka_ 5 років тому +64

Thank you so much for your kind words. As a Muslim, I reflect this tragedy to the other tragedies in the past. I acknowledge, there were instances when some people used radical interpretation of Islam to justify their attacks to the innocent. Thus, some other radical white supremacists would use that as their justification to attack Muslim communities all over the world. And it might trigger endless cycle of hatred and violence. We do not want that. In fact, Muslim communities, in general, interpret Islam as the religion of peace. And I think everyone also want peace and harmony. New Zealanders taught us how to respond to such atrocities. They showed us how to stay strong, they showed the love and compassion. I hope Muslim communities all around the world will pay forward this love to everyone. May peace be upon all of us. May love prevails.

For the past week I have been thinking what if it happened to my brother, dad & other relatives who go for the weekly Friday prayer (at the mosque or at work). I go sometimes too, especially during our holiest month Ramadan. I'm loving what NZ PM Ardern is doing. She has shown leadership, humility & compassion to the world. Other leaders should learn from her including Canada's own. Hate for anyone or a group is unnecessary. There are a lot of horrible messages, especially online. We are all people, we all bleed the same red blood. We all have dreams, families & want to be safe. We have more similarities than differences. @Craft9841 Colbert didn't have to cover this terrorist attack, he CHOSE to. That action in itself speaks volumes. Many talk show hosts didn't cover it at all, and some were downright disrespectful. You have to give credit where credit is due. My reaction to his words WAS because I felt he was genuinely speaking from the heart and saddened by this tragedy. I understand how you feel or at least I think I do. People are fed lies daily by the mainstream media and I say that as someone who is disgusted by Trump and what he stands for as well as establishment Democrats. What happened to you guys wasn't as senseless as Las Vegas, Sandy Hook, etc (I can't believe I can use "etc"); the guy *targeted* your community, he ruminated about it, visited ahead of time, planned ahead - and encouraged others (successfully!) to agree with him.

I think some misinformation is floating around social media.
The McCarran-Walter Act; aka The Immigration and Nationality Act, of 1952, actually ended the exclusion of immigrants from Asia. There are 50 countries in Asia, recognized as independent states; from Russia to Israel to Iran to Thailand, to China, to India.
including the Muslim majority states, such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Egypt, Jordon, etc.
The First Amendment guarantees freedom of religion.
      In America,
      Mormons
      Jews
      Evangelicals
      Orthodoxy
      Wiccans
      Catholics
      Buddhists
      Satan worshippers
      Hindus
      Muslims
      Seventh Day Adventists
      Agnostics
      Jehovah's Witnesses
      Secularists
      Scientologists
      Athiests
      Etc
All live together sharing the common cause of peace and freedom.
Only a major in world religions might know all of the violent calls in all of the scriptures.
There is even a home grown religion that in their scriptures are calls for violent worldwide conversion if not willingly.
Where will we ship those millions worldwide off to?
May Peace and Freedom continue to reign in America.

Thank you, Mr. Colbert. I adore New Zealand - so freshly, beautifully green, filled with lovely people. My heart goes out to you, wonderful Kiwis. I wish we had a strong leader like the New Zealand PM. What a wonderful person Jacinda Ardern is - welcoming migrants and expressing how heartbroken she is that they were attacked in what they rightfully consider their home. She wants to change the gun laws. New Zealand is behaving exactly how the United States SHOULD be reacting. We should welcome and protect legal migrants and change our gun laws. Instead, our crazed leader denies there is a white nationalist problem (PM Ardern correctly realizes he is WRONG), thinks the gun laws are fine and wants to ban Muslims. I am so ashamed of the current US leadership and hope it is replaced by someone like PM Ardern. A girl can dream.

What's worse is your government actually causes most of the conflicts or situations that causes people to flee their countries and go to the west, here in Algeria we started a series of marches and manifestations that had more than 50% (more than 20 million) of the Algerian people peacefully marching demanding from the corrupt government here to go away but guess what? it's backed up now by France, the us and some big countries because they offer them some strategic or economical bribes, for 57 years and after the bloody Algerian revolution France kept it's control over Algeria using it's loyal servants who took control over the army and the state, they kept this naturally rich country poor, it's people miserable and on its knees, when Algerians started to flee the country legally and illegally they are told to go back or stay in their countries, this world is a big mess, people don't realize that we muslims/algerians we don't want more than western countries to stop backing up dictators and let us the people build our countries, we don't need anything else from them. i know this is long and messy but my heart is aching from this injustice, we don't want more than hope and to at least be able to look at the future without seeing darkness coming ahead.

These are the kinds of heartfelt, wise, kind things we would expect a President to say.
If only America had a President at this moment in time.

Please do come Stephen. We thought we were isolated but it turns out we're no different, it had to land on us sooner or later. Now we're aware of it though you better believe we're going to throw everything we've got at it to stamp it out and expose it for what it is 💕

Sadly nz is suddenly in the same position as the U.S. regarding guns. 1.2 million of you own guns for some reason. Killing wildlife mostly, but the guns are there to stay especially with the fanatics that won't hand them over.

      Ancient Alien
How dare you suggest we are in the same position as the US with regards to guns. NZ is a largely rural and agricultural country where guns are used on farms, for hunting, pest control etc, rather than slaughter of humans. If you think we have equivalent “gun fanatics” here you’re delusional. Our laws will change, and peacefully.

@@australien6611 It will change, semi automatic rifles will be gone before the month is out. Along with other reforms to gun laws. You will be hard pressed to find many kiwis who will protest the changes coming.

I'm a Kiwi. I want to divert a little from general expressions of sympathy for us. I don't need sympathy. I didn't lose anyone in the attack. Those families that lost loved ones should be the focus. My heart sinks every time I see a tragedy anywhere (including these poor people more recently in the Netherlands).
    The thought is appreciated, though.
