*Going through a list of covers of The Mind Electric, already firmly believing Scrillow's cover to be my favorite* Literally 5 seconds in: Uh oh we got a contender!
the reversed bit at the beginning cuts a lot of distortion and makes it easier to hear, there's lots of cuts out there that reverses the entire song so you still get the Vibes of the original but you can understand it easier.
Wouldn't hurt to comment, but wow, I can't believe I'm rewatching this a full year after it got released. I keep coming back and rewatching a really great cover, though wished you covered some other Tally hall songs also!
I came back to comment again since I watch this video a lot. The quality is incredible and in my opinion the cover is as good as the original! You did such a great job and deserve way more attention. I hope you do more covers in the future :)
Little bit of both. If I can find something that will steer me in the right direction I'll use it. For this, I referenced this (ua-cam.com/video/ZPSi0P20c0k/v-deo.html) a lot while putting this together, but it is very simplified to give a piano only version and isn't 100% accurate for the whole mix. The vocal harmonies I definitely sounded out 100% for this, as well as the bass, drums, and a good portion of the supporting keyboard. I also had an instrumental version I could reference (here - ua-cam.com/video/IX6rLyvppWU/v-deo.html) as well as some of the isolated tracks I could listen to to piece together specific parts (here - ua-cam.com/video/IX6rLyvppWU/v-deo.html and here - ua-cam.com/video/IX6rLyvppWU/v-deo.html for instance). There's definitely a lot of listening to the same 5 second part over and over to catch some kind of scale or fast transition to piece everything together. Also find once you get one instrument down (charted the main piano mostly using the first link I posted, although had a few minor changes) that the other instruments tend to do very similar things (keys and chord progressions) so it becomes a lot like referencing the cover of the box while putting together a jigsaw puzzle.
This is some quality content right here , u rlly put this enfort in the cover , keep the good work! Also , can i mary your normal voice ? So beautyfull
This is great. One nitpick, on the stand 'insane' should be backwards. The son was the only sane one there, you see. They condemned him to a custom infirmary under the palace to make him more mad. Didn't work, it turns out.
Depends what version of the song you're looking at. Album version with distortion and extra samples has a backward "insane" but the music video version doesn't (which is the album version in reverse, so all the added distortion and samples are in the reverse section and the forward section has none of that). What I did here is MUCH closer to the music video version. Album version - ua-cam.com/video/cKdGKwZOOiI/v-deo.html Music Video version - ua-cam.com/video/zaqTI6d0I7I/v-deo.html
I used pitch shifting software... BUUUUT... the time consuming part was singing the part in a different key. I charted the vocals as they are in the key they are in in a midi program. Then, did some testing with pitch shifting on recordings of my voice to see how much to shift the voice to get the desired vocal effect, as well as if I need to sing any differently (more nasally, deeper, etc) to get it to sound closer to the recording. Then I shifted the charted vocals in the midi program the opposite direction and sing along to those notes before shifting. For instance, if I'm singing, let's say, a C. But to get the effect of a deeper voice I have to pitch shift it down 5 semitones. I would chart a C in a midi program (just using a standard sine wave tone), then shift that up 5 semitones to an F, then record myself singing an F, and then use software to pitch shift that down 5 semitones to a C. It was a lot of trail and error until I was satisfied with what I got. I spent probably 10 hours just messing around with the softward and doing vocal samples to see what I needed to do to get the sounds I wanted.
It was a while ago so I don't really remember the details, but I used a pitch shifter in Ableton. First I charted the vocal on piano so I knew what notes were being sung. I did some tests with the pitch shifter to see how many semitones I have to pitch shift my normal voice up to get the right sound (I think it was something like 5-8 semitones but I don't really remember). Then I take the charted piano vocals, move it down that many semitones, listen to it, and record myself singing those notes (so much lower than what's in the final song) and then pitch shift it up that many semitones so it matches the notes in the final song. I do the same thing in reverse for the lower voices.
Unreal. The piano playing with your twin was fantastic.
Thank you sir!

So much effort and talent and it really paid off! Incredible cover
Thanks a ton!
I love how everything is unreversed so you can actually understand the narrative behind The Mind Electric. Thank you!
You can find some good cuts of the original song online that cut out the reverse as well as some of the distortion as well!
The original becomes normal halfway through
the reversed bit at the beginning cuts a lot of distortion and makes it easier to hear, there's lots of cuts out there that reverses the entire song so you still get the Vibes of the original but you can understand it easier.
HOLY SHIT THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF VOICES FOR THAT BRIDGE IS INSANE I LOVE IT

It’s so perfect and so much effort, dead couldnt stop smiling, good job dude
Do you have the music sheets to reference or you are figuring out all the layers purely by ear?

Wonderful cover as always. You never fail to impress!
Thank you very much!
This is just perfect
Thanks!
I'd like to hear the independent tracks, like, the deconstructed song.
this is amazing! if you can somehow do the flipside version of the song i will be truly floored
Haha, thanks... I did flip the audio and listen to it and it was pretty close. Would have to make a few changes though.
definitely, have to add the distorted bridges and the small piano segment from Murders that the song samples
AAAAAH YES THIS IS SO GOOD
the best cover so far. not even kidding i like this more than the cojum dip one
This is amazing👏🏿
