What do you think? Do the amps sound the same or do they definitely have different tonal characteristics? Do let me know in the comments!

The differences were just more subtle than everyone expected. The speaker plays such a gigantic role in tone.
What makes real difference is speaker, try one amp 20 speakers.
I might do that one day
That would be killer actually

Damn I love the mesa tone.
I had no issues with the first video, i could hear the differences. I would like to personally thank you for doing these vids, im sure they take a shitload of time and effort to do. I personally look forward to them. Im very interested in a EVH lbx 1 vs 2 or a EVH range comparison eg EVH LBX 1/2 vs 50 6L6 vs 50 EL34 vs 100 6L6 vs 100 EL34. Thanks again for all the great content.

Another similarity is that these are all tube amps most likely all using 12ax7 preamp tubes and built very similar to each other. I definitely notice the difference though but they were way more similar sounding then I would have expected in a mix. Thanks for separating the Amps from the mix, that was very helpful, great video!
They most definitely don’t sound the same. I love your videos man! Thank you for uploading them.
Wow! What a great job editing, mixing, writing...
This isolated track version helps those who don't use headphones or Hifi for clarity ;)
Super
Congrats Jon! Nice vid brotha.
Thank you for what you do! Those that can't hear the difference can remain in the dark but you've helped me and a fair few friends of mine find their tone. Your videos are wonderful and extremely helpful.
I liked the 6505 best. Definitely noticeable differences in all the amps. Nice comparison and great playing.
They all sound good but that JMP really caught my ear in the clips. Good stuff.
I heard the differences between each amp and I was listening on my phone. I guess it depends on the person and being used to pay attention to he sonic details. Loved the Mesa and Peavey 💕
thank you thank you thank you for putting the clips side to side like that. I was clicking all around the last video to try an hear them that way. Keep it up man, great stuff!
You're right they sound different, but outside the Orange, the rest, as you say, seem to mostly just be EQ differences, something you could probably adjust a fair bit with a separate EQ. Plus, once you double track the guitars and throw them in a mix, the actual end result doesn't tend to stand out as much. Most all modern high gain amplifiers sound good/adequate, so it's hard to really point to a certain tone and go, "Yea, that's especially good" or something.
i don't understand those comments, you can hear differences even on a phone speaker, I guess some people are just deaf
congrats on 10k :d
Cheers! :)
Andrei Grozea I agreed. Definitely sound different and good.
I’ve come to the same conclusion. I watch UA-cam vids almost exclusively on my phone. I can easily hear the difference between everything
Well, I’m only half deaf (thanks Mesa and Lufthansa), but I can still hear the differences over a stock iPhone speaker :)
INDEED
Your patience and diligence in educating folks is TOTALLY admirable!
I think it is a good practice to finish every video with a summary of your opinion on the amps you showed. It helps to confirm what we thought after listening or even makes us pay attention to some details that can be overlooked or missed due to UA-cam compression. Great video man , keep it up!
You rock dude ! You are absolutely right just keep educating people about sounds because we really need it :) and i am very happy when i feel that i've learning something after watching a video with real added value
For me the Marshall JMP-1 win with a verry good sound as i like !! well done
You’re doing a great job. Thank you so much for making this follow up video! I look forward to more!
I saw that one particular comment and cannot understand it. They all obviously sound quite different, even in the mix. The previous video obviously took an incredible amount of work and it beats anything that one can hear elsewhere on YT. This one goes even further. Thanks!
The comments on the other video are ridiculous - the amps were SO tonally different. Thank you for doing this.
Omg this is exactly what I was wondering ! Thank you for making a video addressing this !
I always love the 5150s and 6505s, but that Marshall sounds good when mix together :o
This video is much better! Now I could hear, clearly, the differences! Thanks!
I can hear the difference between them... Especially the Marshall PreAmp but I also feel like if you EQ each one right they can sound almost identical as well. I do agree with one of the previous comments about the speakers. They make a huge difference as well as far as tone goes.
Interesting. Very Clear differences to my ears and I like them all. Im glad you put the jmp1 preamp in there. Its a classic. Regards, your friend The Fizz
Now I've seen this video too, I'm one of the ones who actually listen with quality headphones so to me they didn't sound the same, and you picked 3 of my favorites from the original video in this one, totally love the sounds these give. The ENGL and H&K also sounded supergreat, wish I could afford ANY of those you tested, right now all I got is a Fender Mustang Mark 5 with a 4x12 Harley Benton with Celestion V30's. Great channel and nice I found it, subscribed
Ochatach I can’t say anything about the Fender, but don’t hate on your cab. You have a solid plywood cab with true V30s in it, which is what most people will pay huge money for in a name brand. Save up for a good head, or even something like the BOSS Katana head. Especially once you get it broken in, that cab can make almost anything sound great
@@zachblevins6327 Not hating on my cab at all, it's the good thing about my setup, just looking to replace the amp right now to get some uber-crunchy deathmetaltones :D Actually looked at the BOSS Katana, but they recently released a V2 with lots more functions and it's not in stock basically anywhere yet.
I could hear all differences clearly! Thanks for such a great video
Mesa and 6505 for the win . They all sound sonically different. But I prefer the Mesa and 6505 for modern high gain🤘good video
Have to agree, the Mesa Recto and Peavy 6505 sound the best. It would be a tough choice for me to pick one, but if I had to I'd probably take the Mesa.
The reason why the sound is different but not that different considering cost, circuit and valves, is because you probably EQed the amps with a reference sound in mind, if You put everything flat, I’m sure the differences would be much more.
Absolutely! But a lot of the amps will sound BAD if I did that!
Great point! The elusive ‘sound in your head’!
I have listened to records, videos, live, and playing with bands that use the Dual Rectifier. I just can’t stand that Mesa fizz haha. It’s just not my style. I always lean for the other brands.
I’ve been addicted to your channel man. The content and information are amazing. I’m learning a lot and you’ve inspired my friends and I to move toward a Helix platform :)
Excellent video! I'm glad to hear that so many good amplifiers sound like this.
Stay tuned for many more videos!
Even on my iPhone you can hear some differences. Some definitely hit a similar way but for sure different beasts. This is almost like a fun ear training example haha. Can’t thank you enough you’ve been helping me in my hunt for a minihead/new amp.
You are very patient. Even too much :) Thank you for this video, quality content as always.
It is clearer in that way, definitely. What power amp (if any) did you use for the jmp1 ?what I came to realize playing around with IR is that it has a huge impact on the sound. So I m always sceptical comparing amps while changing the IR. As you said it’s not a scientific demonstration but I m sure that in the first video stinking to the same ir would have help emphasize the differences. Anyway, good job and wonderful playing !!! I m actually watching this video again and again to help choose between a dual rectifier, a single recto, a orange lunchbox... I really need to make up my mind :-)
Yeah man, to my untrained ear side by side comparison is much better for spotting those differences (which are huge, lol). Thanks for doing this.
I like this format much better with each short phrase compared side by side. 😁👍
Congratulations on the 10k man, I really like the way you do amp shootouts, very dynamic, without stalling, always straight to the point....also you make some sick riffs. Keep on the good work!!
Thank you so much!
As a complete novice I do find for home recording the cab does sooooo much for sound and tone. Most times I can only do from the FX send out and then use the TPA power amp VST and then an IR for tones, and not surprising you get alot of similar tones between my two amps, the EVH and the Bugera 6262. Mic placement is a huuuuuuuge deal as well from what I have found too. never realized just how big mic placement is.
The difference is now CLEAR!!!
If you put only the isolated parts in the 22 amp comparison video I can hear the difference. I think the isolated part should have been a little bit larger in the first video. Nice video btw!
Great video mate!
I am voting for JMP, it sounds so tight
Congrats on the 10k Jon. You've earned it.
Thank you!
Very clear difference right now! Thx
Wouldn't say that in the other video all the amps sound the same, but in this format the differences are much more apparent. Personally I prefer it this way!
Using monitor headphones is really necessary when doing research of gears. My Senheiser HD25 and behringer UMC22 combo are cheap but they get the job done pretty well. I have already managed to get my ideal dimarzio pickups and amps with these gears. Nice content btw :)
Isolated makes a big difference to untrained ears. Also, doing the clips fast like this helps a ton. You know I loved the last video, but this method of comparison is definitely a lot more clear to most people. Last video, I was listening intently, with trained ears. Now everyone can hear it
I think this just shows how much impact the speaker/mic/mic placement has. If those are constant throughout, the amp differences are subtle.
Agree with some of the other comments: speakers are everything. I have an Egnater Tweaker 40, and several different cabs with different speakers. That is a very versatile amp, and it sounds very good through certain speakers, whereas it sounds almost horrible through others. Just have to find the right combo. Fun.
I can't say how important it is to actually play an amp in person. So many attributes can be left on the table listening to different amps online. All of these amps are fantastic in their own right....
Dude, your wearing a Metallica t shirt, you got a new sub!....loved the one riff, 21 amp video...
I think what people may experience is ear fatigue. I loved your last video alot. Also I think the thing is between the comparison is when you compaired all the 4 oranges there is a similarity between them. I heard differences with all the amps. But you got me to subscribe
Really liking the JMP1 in the mix. Has a great clarity to it. (Listening with a pair of Yamaha HS7 monitors).
In the mix it was a touch harder to pick up. Isolated it stands out. Also reassured me for buying my mesa boogie mark 5. Not a fan of any Marshall amp yet. 🤷♂️
Yes, the differences are super clear. Love the dual rec. Dank voor de gave filmpjes. Groeten uit Leiden.
Mate, sounds mega again, love that 6505 tone!
A guitar rig has 3 main components, guitar, amp & cab. If you use the same guitar and cab and just change the amp, there will be differences (presuming you have the amps dialed in roughly the same) but not as much as say, going from single coil pickups to active EMGs. Same could be said going from a 1x10" cab to a 4x12 with a cross pattern of V30s and G12-75s.
Overall I thought he did a good job of representing each one. People have said the same thing about Ola Englund's channel as well. It's because he tends to run the amps & pedals through his 2x12 Hesu cab and more times than not, he uses a Solar guitar with the same pickups, so it's the same situation. That's how you do a FAIR comparison between amps, same guitar, same cab and see which one people prefer.
Looking forward to more demos, sir.
No, they don't all sound the same in the last video but some of them are pretty close. Mesa and Marshall each has its own easily identifiable sound signature but the 6505mh, EVH, Jim Root, and MT15 sound very close. Not the same, but close.
As for low end tightness, an extra factor is it depends on where the resonance knob is set (for those that have one).
Yes similar...all sound a bit EQ'd just a tad....but what we cant "feel" is how spongy or tight the feel of these amps are and sustain after the last chord.....(mesa boogie feedback style)
Now I can clearly perceive a huge difference between the amps! Last night I used a small headphone to hear it and all 22 amps sounded very similar to me. Now I heard it thru the Bose S1 Pro and maybe it could made a difference.. Thank you very much for your patience, demo and explanations!
If you have to use different headphones to spot the difference, it is not worth to bother because normal listeners dont care very much. They care about the song. And invest in different guitar speakers make far far far far far more different and far far far more cost effective.
I love the Mesa but man the quality of sound you can get from that 6505 for the cost is astounding, especially used. Bravo!
Also just realized, after listening, this song has been stuck in My head since last week. Seems like maybe I've heard it before, "20+times" rock on
I love that you did this second video.
I didn't hear a difference until you isolated the guitar without any drums. Then it was very clear.
The orange and the Mesa sounded so brutal! Love it
Yes, you can hear clear differences, but some of us have years of experience dialing in tones so maybe that's a factor in play, all are recorded in very good quality but I know the sound can also be disrupted by UA-cam compression or streaming rates. Wondering if you have a favorite? Ciao, ALDO
They're definitely different sounding. Obviously similar due to how you did it but that makes it a good comparison video.
This Method (A/B with hardcuts) is th best to hear the differences for sure. In the last Video it is obvious that every amp works in a good mix, thats what was to learn ;)
Dude don’t listen to the haters! After listening to every amp I’m able to pick my favorites cause well... they all sound different!
I heard the video yesterday in my house with Event 20/20 passive monitors. My room have poor (almost none) acoustic treatment and 2 walls full of books. Didn't heard much difference between the amps. Got back to it today with ATM M50X headphones and heard clear differences between amps. But to hear them with great clarity I had to jump into sections using the links just hearing the first riff. I think there might be a video editting issue. There are like 3 riffs one after the other and a silence between takes. The "shape" of each riff is different so, by the time you get to the 1st one again I already forgot how the 1st riff sounded like with the previous amp. But I totally understood the index was there to solve that issue. Another thing that may have happened is that the guitar isn't too high compared to the rest of the instruments because... it's a mix. Anyway I found the video in question, and this one, as a good excercise to practice to discern better between amps both isolated and in a mix along with understanding the differences between them, what gives every amp a unique character, etc. Also to understand my monitor/room sound and what I should do to improve which will probabbly be using more headphones until I can afford treatment and better monitors.
This videos have been pretty informative. Tyvm.
I loved the 5150's and hated a few of the others, so they definitely didn't all sound the same.
Mooferoo stole my comment I was about to say the same thing
how boring.
What a great video, highlights the differences very clearly.
Aw, naw, man! Only with-in the same brands did the amps sound "slightly similar", but as one would expect. Your original video was perfect! That video is in a class of its own, and I don't know of any other video on youtube like it! Well, at least not in the same magnitude of amps compared. You're doing amazing things for the "guitar-amp-community", Thank you!!!
I find it funny that people couldn't tell the difference. It was NIGHT and DAY different between most of these (excluding same brand-to-brand comparisons). I'm pretty sure you're right, they must have used a cellphone or tablet, but then again hearing damage is no joke.
I bought a/my ENGL Ironball the next day because of your video. Keep them videos coming!
Awesome! Cheers Roland!
Thank you John! I'm quite interested what are other qualities for distinguishing the sound of guitar amp :)
Of course they sound different. But for someone that is not in this kind of music, I mean really having an ear for high gain sounds, there may not be much discernible difference.
The other day I was trying out all my guitars, comparing them one after the other (strats, teles, LPs, P-90 guitars etc) and my friend asked me why I have so many when they all sound the same. To a lay person a guitar is a guitar. It doesn’t matter if it’s a start or Les Paul. They make a “guitar” sound. Same goes for someone who doesn’t really know high gain sounds.
One more factor is that each guitarist tweaks amps into what they feel to be a balanced tone. If it’s the same person tweaking and playing the sounds will have common ground.
Keep up the good work!
Just amazing work as always! Differences are quite obvious, but might get buried under dense mix.
I know you made kinda this thing in the past, but is there any chance for some sort of "1 riff, 1 amp, 25 Cabs / IRs" comparison? Video dedicated solely to the most important - in my opinion - piece of signal chain?
Great idea!
They all sound pretty different to me! Nice Job!
Very informative video, but I do hear quite a difference. Especially I was surprised how little I like the Mesa! To my ears the EVH and JMP-1 are the winners. You can actually hear the sound of the guitar AND the amp, whereas the Mesa just sound like a Mesa amp, and the guitar itself doesn't really shine through. Keep it up, and I agree you should def make a video showing how much difference changing cabs can make!
Awesome chanel man!! Love that amp wall, also kinda jealous of it lol
I really enjoyed the first video and this one is great.
I guess many people might have listened from poor quality speakers or their smartphone.
I just hooked up my handy can on a string all I heard was the ocean. Next time i'll plug it in. lol
Great video and new subscriber !! BTW they all sound great but certainly different.
Goddam that Mesa Rectifier sounds amazing. Maybe I'm a bit biased because I have one sitting in my guitar room at home... It's definitely my favorite out of the 4 with the Peavy being a close second. There's just something about a high gain scooped tone with that "bright fizz" overtone. Must be the reason I bought one in the first place.
i listented the other video few days ago and i felt only a couple of orange sounding almost the same but others was have really different tone. i listen through a presonus firestudio project and audio technica ATH-M50X
Maybe you should do a comparison if tge 22 amps but using the same IR for all. It would make the differences in the amps easier to spot
In my experience it would make the differences much smaller. And in those cases I always get complaints that they all sound the same. Lol
Hi John, thx for the sharing and I do like the way you did it. One thing makes me really curious: what was exactly the way you ran thru the same guitar track 22 times thru different amps? Any special gear or daw or IR app used to make it happen?
great videos!! the riffs are killer asome!!
Honestly the shorter clips really helped isolate the tonal differences.
Recto and Marshall were my favourites.
They all sound completely different so no idea how people can't tell. Personally thought the JMP-1 sounded absolutely fantastic and easily the best of the bunch.
It's so good! I got that for 200 euros. Can you believe that?
Appreciate the follow up here. And your explanation is spot on. Curious what was the reasoning behind swapping the IRs?
The initial goal of the first video was just to showcase the amps with that riff. Meaning that I wanted to make the amps sound awesome. Each amp needs a different cab sound to sound awesome imho, at least some choices/options. So it was more a fun experiment rather than a super scientific comparison. Having said that, there is no post eq etc on the guitars so the tones a very pure.
6505 and DR for me. Btw, I'm started to realize that isolated tones are useless; all that should matter is how they sound in the mix, which is often very different.
80% of Tone is in the hands. I'm using Yamaha msp10s so I can hear the difference. It doesn't sound tremendously different except I'm iso tracks. I use amplitude 4 with all the same amps. I agree with you for the most part
they only sound the same if you listen to then with a device that does not offer proper detail, either your ear is not enough refined. Keep up the good work man, I really appreciate it, I am also addicted to guitar recording and your production is excellent, you are one of my main references when recording guitar. In fact when recording my own album I used some of the tricks you mentioned in your videos.
I'm also an addict haha!
I think it's an issue with peoples ear/concentration ability, I heard a massive difference (on the full video as well as this one) even on tiny
i see, it’s that there really is a difference, especially when amps isolated
I am an old guitar player, born in 1957 and my first fuzz box was a Big Muff! I got to admit, that thing made me feel like a guitar genius, Lol! But anyways, just saying, with distortion/gain cranked so that you can't even make out what kind of axe it is makes it a bit hard for me to tell the difference between 1 fuzzy sound on all amps! I prefer the amp just about breaking up so you can even tell what the pickups are!
When I watched the original, my first thought was that the riff was too long. They sounded very similar to me. This is so much better. Can totally tell the depth of difference between them.
I liked the mesa, and the peavey, but I recon they would sound amazing blended together. marshall pre sounded characterless and orange ok, but like it had a blanket over it and too low low mids
awesome! I can hear the difference they all sound good!
I definitely prefer the Peavey and the JMP1. Mesa Sounds to scooped and fizzy.... Great vid as always! Those who don't hear the difference should wash their ears.... ;)
Personally, I liked all the tones. I think it’s cool that there are so many options. On my budget, used equipment is a common option and I don’t always get exactly what I would like. (The Mesa wuz my personal favorite in this comparison)
