*NOTE: This entire video was shot in 6K R3D RAW and edited on the Mac mini M1. No issues editing in Premiere. For the opening intro, that was graded & cut in Resolve, did get some hiccups with the layering of the 6K R3D HQ raw files on the timeline for the split screen, was on a 4K timeline and was pretty rough to get through. But over on Premiere, for the rest of the edit, no issues at all. 🦾🤘🏼
What do u use for color grading?
I'm just over here trying to edit in Resolve 1080p on my year-old $1200 gaming PC (with no color grade) and it's jumping all over the place 🤦♂️
Said I would never - but so tempted to jump ship and go Mac right now. Had iPhones since year one and if Mac can give me a similar user experience... will probably never go back.
@@youtubechannel12371 what exatcly do you do on it?
What about a 52 minutes documentary in HD and 4K? Can I color grade it on a Mac Mini like this?
@@MrMolack Should be no problem at all. I’ve been editing and grading in 6K Red raw at half & quarter rez.
Very impressed. You have actually answered the question that I have been pondering over regarding M1 and Komodo.
Super impressive. Thanks for posting
I'd suggest turning off the noise reduction node. It's always the biggest affector for me
Agree
You can Cache it as first node.
Thank you great video
Thank you for this excellent video. My only recommendation would be to activate the "Dropped Frame Indicator" when doing timeline playback tests in Premiere Pro.
interesting, never knew about that option! 🙌🏼
That M1 power is fantastic, just edited a two hour video shot in Multicam, braw and mp4. So smooth, the noise reduction is the only thing that makes the computer lag.
What software??
@@DB-lr6kl Davinci Resolve 🤙🏼
How many clips of multi and what reso braw????
it was 4K braw, I can stack 4 clips with ease on my 8Gb M1
@@adrienpayet im def gone wait to see what the “16 bring to the table im editing 6kraw/6k r3d raw and for music videos i use a stacced timeline...
This is impressive! Especially with NR on ! Cause I have an i9 10900K with a 3080 and with NR i get like 6frames lol
I think the most impressive part of it all is that the Mac Mini M1 doesn't even have a GPU-specific chip. Absolutely everything is being done on the one chip.
If you watch on the color grading/fusion page , like you are, you will find a difference on what you called 'slowed down' effect that you likely will not see if you were watching from the timeline. I get similar lag unless I am reviewing on the timeline.
Question can I hook my 4k tv to it does it has any ports for that
It's all about how optimized the tools for different platforms. Canon raw 8k crm files works just fine with m1 mini. But i tried the same on my ryzen 9 and rtx 3070 build, it crashes! On both premiere and resolve. But when it comes to r3d 8k files ryzen 9 is great!! Still m1 mini is a fantastic tool considering it's low price compare to my 2100usd ryzen+rtx pc
Good stuff! Are those monitors the
z27x?
Thank you Iwill be working with bmcc 2.5 k and 4k if this play like this with 6 k this saves me alot of money for 7.00.00 it's a dream
I'd definitely bypass the NR node after you've tweaked it to your liking and reenabled it once it's time to render. It's a giant resource hog.
Love ur vids, watch them all. Would u recommend an macbook air M1 for bmpcc4k braw footage with davinci resolve? I can colorgrade on my main desktop but i want to at least cut up and edit the 4k braw on a laptop. People say braw is not good with m1, what is ur experience?
i dont know. I’ve never used braw on the M1. But Resolve is very fast and responsive on the M1. Even with R3D, so i imagine Braw would be even smoother
Is the m1 mini 8gb strong enough for DaVinci resolve studio 18 ?
Did you use premier pro beta for m1? Or just regular premier vía roseta 2 ?
Same with resolve, did you use the m1 beta? Or regular vía roseta ?
Thank you
Premiere was roseta. Resolve...it was the latest FW from them prior to the filming, from what i can remember from the resolve notes, it did say something about M1 updates
This is a great video... I have the Komodo on order and I'm planning on upgrading toa mac book pro with the M1 chip. I edit on premiere as well. How does the macbook pro compare to the mac mini?
I’m curious as well. Also how do you upgrade your MacBook with the M1 chip?
If I use proxy should I be able to use my Mac mini 8 GB ram
And does DaVinci have a proxy feature ?
I noticed the glitch you mentioned @ 4.45 in some of Joey Helms videos and thought it was camera issues, but no one was talking about it anywhere. Based on your findings, is it an error with the RED Komodo or with editing on a computer that cannot handle it?
i’ve only ever seen it in this scenario
Felissa Rose? lol Legend!
Thanks for the video buddy! Do you think its worth going for a 16gb version to only edit in resolve?
its been working pretty good for me, but i’ve been doing 4K ProRes for the most part to make my life easier. This was more just a temporary solution. im looking at the pro m1’s now
Hey man, I would like to ask what was the timeline resolution you were working on this project, did you downscale it to 1080p or with the original resolution of the footage ? would really appreciate your reply
cant remember. Too long ago
Great video. I literally see no difference visually bw 6k and quarter. I would have no issues always working on a quarter resolution, so long as it’s at least HD. Btw, is this 17.3? Hear it’s much faster.
not sure, this is from when the M1 first came out
Its playing back at 18fps.. Thats still impressive.
This is very impressive, given the fact that Resolve isn’t optimized or converted to M1 just yet (correct me if I’m wrong), neither is Premiere Pro. When they are... they’re going to be 2-3x faster and more efficient!
That’s right! BMD has been updating Resolve frequently to catch up with M1 tech. Adobe...not so much
@@JustinPhillip That's because BMD loves Apple.
@@klatchabobby , no. It’s because Adobe PP is mash up of old and new code that can’t really be optimized. Adobe needs to program an entirely new application in order to take advantage of the M1 and even AMDs new RDNA technology. Adobe has just been throwing new features in PP and relying on users to upgrade hardware power to compensate for its lack optimization. Davinci Resolve isn’t bloated mess like Adobe PP.
can you tell me if there is an option to enable "display hdr..." in the settings of davinci on a mac mini. Maybe I'll buy a mini for color grading. Windows don't have that feature and I have no decklink and only one HDR monitor with 1400 nits. It's just for hobby projects.
@Star in The Sky I bought a Mac mini now and I found it. Now I can grade my footage now.
I am happy to report that on the 8Gb ram M1 it is very similar. So what if you set the RAW decoding setting at half good and 10 bit as you did and at export you check the box "force debayer to maximum quality". Wouldn't this export just like if you use the high premium and 16 bit except you cannot see what happen in real time when playing back?
hmmm. Will try it out
why my mac mini m1 stocks when in davinci studio 17.2 i make a few color correction
🤷🏻♂️
Can i make 1 hour wedding video in premier pro in 1080p without any lag and davinci resolve also
Plzz help Mee I'm starting my business plan on this device
The more memory means the CPU has faster access the files because it doesn’t have to call back to storage. I wouldn’t be reading/writing 16-bit video files to a external drive unless it was connected Thunderbolt (full buss) and my system had more than 8GB of RAM. Just because the Mac M1 can read/write that fast between the memory and storage doesn’t mean it can do it sustainably without glitches. Having more memory allows the storage to be idle because most of the project content is sitting in memory already.
Hey Justin, I'm getting a new Mac for editing and grading R3D RAW footage (4K, 6K, 8K). Would you recommend the new M1 or am I better off getting the 64 GB intel version?
Did you make a decision yet?
@@bradleykussy I went with a M1 to test it out on a couple of small advertising projects. Works GREAT in DaVinci, grading in 4K, 6K and 8K no problem at all. Premiere Pro was a bit laggy at times and I eventually had to edit with proxies, but I'm looking forward to when Premiere is fully compatible with the M1. After Effects was way more cooperative than Premiere. The price is laughable with this performance, but for high end professional use I'd most definitely go for a Mac Pro if you have the budget. I'll be keeping the M1 in my home office, replacing my 2018 MacBook Pro.
@@larschristiannygaardstrand7791 hell ya! I shoot mostly 4K VLog or 6k Braw with my Eva1 and S1H, but I also shoot Redcode RAW 5k 8:1 at times. How do you think the Redcode and H.264/H.265 codecs can be handled in Davinci with the M1? My 2015 MacBook Air is about to be toast lol 😂 not sure if I should get an M1 or wait until the next M1 gen.
@@larschristiannygaardstrand7791 Also, this is the 1st gen m1 chip....it'll only get better from here.
Is there a downside to just using proxies? Also, I was wondering that since the mini only comes with 128 gb of storage. This may be a stupid question. But if you have a 500 gb video file saved on an external file. Can you still edit it in the mac mini? I'm not familiar with external ssd's. I just assume they are big storage devices similar to a USB. So wouldn't you need to move the file onto the mac mini to work with it or can you work with it even if its only connected to the mac but not on the mac? if that makes sense.
ive always edited off of external drives. SSDs are very fast. No issues
@@JustinPhillip Cool didn't even know that was possible. In my head I was like man do I need to move this file for this to work.
in color management, do you work with davinci wide gamut for raw red files? or do you work in another way?
ACEs color transform
@@JustinPhillip and if you can handle the highlith roll off in aces cct?
Airdrop 😂😂😂👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Man that's actually great, there is nois Reduktion, thats milkes the shit out of any PC
I have i rtx2080 a i9 9900k nvme and 32gb, on my system cache is off(or user for nr) 6k braw full res play full fps..if you use cache you are not playing r3d but prores…..
Justin, was that on an HD timeline in Resolve? or a 4K? Coz, 4K is a struggle on my system with your setup.
honestly i dont recall. But yea, it definitely runs a LOT smoother on 1080p timeline. Now i know guys that do the whole edit in 1080p and then switch to 4k right before export. as long as you dont have a crap ton of digital zooms and punch ins, its super easy
@@JustinPhillip gotcha! CAn you help me out what should I do to do this..... could/n find it thnx
every grading pro would tell you that everything above 1080 would bog down the system even Mac Pro 2019 spec out. lander scientific monitors are often 1080 on 24 inch size so
Why don't you mention gpu? It's important.
Btw, I heart premiere is awful with m1. They didn't make optimization. Or no?
Optimization with Premiere is Adobe's responsibility. They'll catch up in time. Also, there's no mention of GPU because the M1 Mac Mini doesn't have a dedicated GPU. All of the stuff in this video is being done all on the M1.
I read there is an M1 specific version of Davinci?
no, they certainly have made updates for it, i think three since this video
Yes… you are correct (first guy) 17.1 is optimized for the M1. This was released in March ‘21, which makes older Tubes frustrating, because the game changed again after this.
Thanks! Any feedback on Braw? 4K?
oh, slices thru it like butter
@@JustinPhillip oh? Maybe I should stop waiting for the higher tier m1x and just get the 16g version and let my 2014 MBP 15” a long vacation?
@@alexshdvideo idk man, if you can wait i would, i was literally backed into a corner. Kept having serious issues with the PC
Playing back in the color page is always really slow, why din't you try it on the edit page?
didnt realize that made a difference
@@JustinPhillip Does for me, The color page always srcubbed and played jittery for me. Mac Intel here. I imagine it is because it is working on the highest quality image but not sure myself why.
Lucky u .. 16gig version is hardly available anywhere. Or at least when I was looking for one.
Really??
@@JustinPhillip From Apple it takes 2-3 weeks.
@@FelixCervantes we got ours from B&H five days after ordering, with AppleCare
In was actually like 2 months ago. The 8gb version was available. But the fact that it’s all soldered in is a bummer. As I do music also. This will probably be disastrous for me now. All these music apps are always so far find and half of my plugins will not even work. I’ll stay in Catalina now with my ryzen 7 3700x for now.. actually blown away how well it works as a Hakintosh. But this mini is pretty awesome. Just curious if the M1 will run black magic 4K Red. In the future I do plan to get rid of my tower.
@@TonyFuego oh it slices thru BRAW 4K like butter.
You are cool
Haha I'm not gonna argue about Mac vs Pc🤣 but I was just wondering what graphics card was in the pc cuz I know a lot of performance in davinci especially when grading depends on graphics card especially vram. And I think the ryzen 5 1600 was a great 6 core but they were slow cores so they weren't near as fast as intel back then
GeForce GTX 1060
@@JustinPhillip gotcha, not gonna convert you back to pc 🤣 but that may be a huge bottle neck. I know some of the higher end cards especially the rtx line have some better acceleration with the geforce studio drivers especially with red and resolve! But glad the M1 is working for you cuz that's all that matters is working with what we know and whats the best tool for the individual!
If you just upgraded to a ryzen 7 or 9 you'd have been able to run just fine and saved some money in the process. I just don't find macs to be a good investment nowadays. They're unserviceable and have a short lifespan. Maybe that's the sound mixer in me. Almost all our gear barring a few things is pretty serviceable ourselves and we DIY a lot anyway for specialty cables and such. I've ran 6k red footage on resolve with a ryzen 7 and 32 gigs of ram and a gtx 1060.
yeah i just got tired of babying that PC. Constantly upgrading that as well. I’d much rather have something more compatible with my macbook and certainly having ProRes as an export option now is enough for me to switch.
@@JustinPhillip Hey Brother... you can export ProRes on a Windows Machine as of 2020, if I'm not mistaken. I graded a short film for someone and exported ProRes for them in the latter part of last year.
@@fitoperezproductions hmm. never was an option for me in Resolve and Premiere...maybe with the newest Windows? idk, we had a 2020 version tho
Wish youtube let me post a pic in the comments.. just took a screenshot of the pulldown option in Premiere. (I had to double check bc I was doubting myself 😁)
@@JustinPhillip yeah you can export ProRes on PC. I did it all the time at work
Building a 6core only PC for editing was a terrible idea.
how much do you recommend?
@@JustinPhillip the more cores the better. The 6core is a gaming chip because games prefer around 6 cores clocked higher
@@burgunbeerd , I don’t think that’s the case anymore with a DirectX 12 Engine in which previous generation rarely saw games from because UE4 (DX11) is the most widely used. DX11 doesn’t use CPU threads efficiently. Also, there is no such thing as a gaming chip lol.
that's cos the m1 can't handle it ..
Love your channel, love your art, love how you teach. But please don't say 'rad' and stuff like that.
