1967 USC vs UCLA

- Top-ranked UCLA (7-0-1) visited #2 USC (8-1) in late November of 1967. With the Bruins owning a 20-14 advantage in the 4th quarter, USC quarterback Toby Page audibled the play call to 23-Red Blast, a handoff to running back O.J. Simpson. The Juice went up the middle, cut to the left sideline, then all the way back across the field to the right corner of the endzone--a 64 yard touchdown run that John McKay called the greatest snap he'd ever coached. USC won, 21-20, and went on to the Rose Bowl to beat #4 Indiana, winning McKay his second national championship in six years. UCLA QB Gary Beban would win the 1967 Heisman, followed in 1968 by O.J. Simpson.

I loved the quarterback, Toby Page and I was at that game...the greatest game in the 60's. GO GO USC!!
This was one great game. I wish someone could post Gary Beban's great winning td run against Tennessee that year. That was one great run.
Both teams always wore their home games back then - b/c it was a home game for both teams as they played in the Coliseum. I wish they'd still do it. USC-UCLA is the most colorful game, imo. Best game to watch.
This was the greatest game I ever saw. Beban was running a truly modern offensive attack and therefore was exposed to a lot of hits. His ribs were injured. The USC defense kept penetrating and sacking him. Beban kept limping off the field.
Simpson's run crystalized how well he could run and cut back on the defense. He ran 64 yards untouched.
wow those Trojans were physical and knew how to tackle, today’s SC defense could learn from them.
you got to remember for many years usc and ucla both played at the coliseum until the early 8o's when ucla went to play in the rose bowl
That was the first college football game I ever attended. I remembered some of those great plays, even Bebans long touchdown passes. I especially remember OJ's famous run in the 4th quarter and all of those sacks near the end of the game. I would have loved watching Zenon Andryshyshn's (sp?) missed point- after. That was the game.
This is bunk. It's a USC highlight film. Fact is, Gary Beban passed for over 300 yds. in the game & won the Heisman Trophy. UCLA lost by a point, but this makes it look like the Trojans dominated.
i love how the two teams both wore home jerseys.
Agreed. Don't forget the series produced 3 heisman winners from 65-68. No rivalry can say the same thing.
Excellent video loved the music and retro commercial. Thanks. And strictly football.
Love those UCLA jerseys.
I lived in LA at the time. This game was HUGE. Still hurts to see it. I'm forever a UCLA fan. OJ was a beast.
This needs to be retitled USC highlights. I saw the game on TV at the time and it wasn’t this onesided
excellently production for youtube. A real pro put this together
No chance, man. You have no idea. We were here and we were loud. I remember it well. Ucla fans' passion for bruin football doesn't even hold a candle to the passion of USC fans! Oh I'm sorry, I mean U$C. If you think I'm offended by the $, then you're wrong... it's actually a compliment!
The USC Fullback had an absolute crushing block that put a UCLA LB on his back on the 64 yard OJ Simpson run to clear daylight just past the line of scrimmage. It’s hard to see on this video, but I think it was #38 Dan Scott, the USC Fullback who threw the block. Does anybody know for sure?
This was the first college football game I ever attended. What a thriller! Too bad for the Bruins Zenon Andrushyshn missed that point after. Glad the Trojans won.
Love SC's fighting theme...!
What an epic game! Some observations: the field in the Coliseum then was so far from the seats it's ridiculous; unlike today, the student sections did not wear their school colors, but white, as is evident by the 2 huge blocks of white on each side of the field; the SC band is not even half as big as it is now; UCLA had a great team (unlike the atrocious teams of the last decade); this game had consequenses, unlike the recent SC-UCLA games, that have seen the Bruins beaten 11 times in 12 years.
OJ actually isn't an alumnus of USC. He never graduated. Anyway, regardless of what happened decades after his time at USC, you have to admit he was one hell of a football player.
To the producers of this video, and USC fans who see nothing wrong with it.: You lack respect both for the SC-UCLA rivalvry and for one of the greatest games of all time. Despite 40-plus years having passed, and a one-point win margin, and a stellar performances by great players on both sides, all you give a damn about is USC's great plays. This is what gives USC fans the reputation for snobbery and conceit that they deserve. I would equally condemn a video that did the same in favor of UCLA.
I'm not a USC fan but I like John Mckay. He's the man!
I agree. There is no question that OJ should have a two-time Heisman winner. He's one of 3 or 4 best college backs EVER. But voters won't vote for underclassmen, or in OJ's case, first year players. Hershal Walker should have won three. As a freshman he gained about 1,800 yeards (in the SEC) and carried Georgia to their only National Championship (12-0). He should have won in 81, too. He finally received it in 82 and probably repeated in 83 had he stayed for his Senior season.
Wait a minute as Michigan State man, I have no dog in this fight. But I seem to recall there were TWO great teams on the field that day. Somehow, I remember names like "Beban", "Manning", "Slagle" and "Farmer" USC does little to honor its victory with this film, which makes it seem that the only things that happened were OJ running and The Great ONE getting sacked
Yes, just like many soccer teams do in Europe.
For example, when Manchester United plays Manchester City in the English Premier League, Man U wears their red jerseys and Man C wears their light blue kits.
USC and UCLA should wear their home uniforms again when they face each other.
you have to love that end zone back then
@Mickagume You are absolutely right. I was at this game and Beban played his heart out. Zenon Andrusyshin had several chances to win or tie the game and blew every one of them.
Never forget taking the 83 bus down Wilshire and picking up the Vermont bus and having to get off about 15 blocks early because there was so much traffic the bus driver stated we would never get there in time. I will never forget that Zenon Andrushyn had two field goals and that all important extra point blocked. Even as a 10 year old, I knew that was huge. Oh and the Coliseum field being completely covered in toilet paper after the game. Never to this day have I seen something like that.
yeah, i knew that, i think i read somewhere that they're gonna start that tradition again this season.
UCLA actually stuffed USC defensively. The UCLA offense was really the culprit - take away the interception for a TD and add one field goal you get UCLA by 9 - not USC by 64.
USC was fueled only by 2 big offense plays.
Yeah, I think that the video would have been much better with the full story of the game included, but I wasn't the one who made the compilation. As it is, I'd rather be able to see half the story then none at all.
That was a great game, one of the best. Tremendous build-up, lots of drama, a lot of offense, even if the score wasn't so high. Lead changes. Simpson's run.
This video would have been much better had it shown the good plays by both teams. The highlights belie the score - if scores weren't posted you'd think the final was 41-0. In actuality UCLA outplayed USC until OJ had that awesome run in the 4th.
The fans sitting at the torch end of the Coliseum look like they're a mile away from the field.
that must have been a great game
I've met Toby Page before. What an Arrogant person that man is. He reminds me of Al Bundy. He will tell you about this game every chance he gets. Yo' Toby your not as big of a legend as you think you are!
The quarterback wasn't Toby Page. It was Steve Sogge. Page's number was 10 and Sogge's was 15. Page was a senior that year and was the starter for the first half of the season. I believe it was the Stanford game, about midway through the season that Toby Page got injured and Sogge took over as QB for the Trojans. Sogge was a Junior and had a great rest of the season, plus 1968. They were truly a 4th quarter team. We called them the 'Cardiac Kids.'
Sorry John, but it sounds like you may have gotten your information from CNN or MSNBC or another fake news outlet. Toby Page was the quarterback on this famous play. I worked with Toby Page for 26 years and we are close friends. Toby called the audible and the rest, as they say, is history.
@@williamrice5772 dude, look at the number on the quarterback's jersey. It clearly shows 15. Now, if Toby Page was 15 and Sogge was 10, I'll eat my words, but I recall it was the other way around. I'll continue checking.
Also, not all errors are attributable to CNN and MSNBC. Next thing you know, you'll be calling me a transphobic racist for getting this detail right or wrong.
Go Juice!
I hear that! People like you and I suffered through that Ted Turner, Larry Smith, John Robinson, Paul Hackett debacle. 20 years of mediocrity, even if we did win a Rose Bowl in 1996. But despite the losing and frustration, we stayed true. Ucla wins one game in 2006 and all of a sudden, they're here again. Where were they the seven years before???
basically the USC fight song.. u can download it from morpheus just put in college fight songs and ti should be there
It's nice to own football in LA again! Last year was a fluke...
Fight On SC
Both teams wore their home jerseys....cool
USC's first game of 09 will be against San Jose State! It'll be the Pete Caroll and Dick Tomey Show! Wahooo!
Man O.J can run that ball
they only did that when they played in the same stadium, then the bruins moved to the Rose Bowl in the 80s.
Correction, USC played the first game in the Rose Bowl.
Most people forget UCLA got blown out the following week by Syracuse.
In fact, wasn't the phrase, "At least we have basketball!" coined at ucla??? I think it was!
it's dumb that the ncaa is gonna charge the trojans a timeout for each half. both teams wearing their home jerseys is a tradition that i think should've never ended in the first place.
and it seems like they play in the Rose Bowl every january 1st.
Go UCLA! YOU ROCK!
Hilarious. I had no idea the "FUCLA" taunt went back that far. I know this game took place well into the 1960s, well past the end of American innocence and the "Leave It To Beaver" days. But showing a FUCLA banner? Too funny. Check it out at the 7:58 mark on the video.
UCLA was more fun in the days when the "serpentined" out of the huddle into their single wing formation.
he probably most deserved in 1965, but he was a sophomore that year, The Next year, he was going up against Griese kid stuff and Steven Our Superior.
Do you also recall the fact that the Bruins played very well on defense for most of the game, or that some guy named (what WAS his name agai, passed for 300 yards with2 broken ribs?)
@DrBarnes1 I think Beban took too much of the offense on himself. He looked rather battered and bewildered by the USC defensive line. He didn't seem to have a lot of quickness, which you would need against a defense like this. BTW, this was the first college game I had ever attended. I was nine years old at the time and I had a hell of a great time.
Amen!
USC's first game is against SJSU!
if you've seen any of sckego's other videos, you'd know the answer to that.
OJ turned out to be a horrendous man.
But he was very likely the best college football player in history.
I don't get it ... watching these clips it looks like USC won 64-0, yet I'm told it was a close game. Could you be favoring USC in your selection? It would seem so. I also remember a USC tackler lifting Gary Beban up and slamming his already cracked ribs in a great demonstration of a lack of sportsmanship. I would not be so enamored with USC's performance.
#50 USC
Adrian Young he's the owner of my friends apartment
he even gave me advice.
Wow, OJ really "cut" through the bruin's defense!
Would be better without the music and with the actual commentary.
damn o.j. you really messed up
simpson s eight td run may have been even better than the 64 yrd run to win the game....
+anth bano It was
Best run ever by a murderer. Hands down.
how did both teams do against Oregon State that year again?
I'll wear my ucla gear the day after we lose to sc, I'll wear it after we go 0-10. I'll wear it rain or shine bro.
@greymoose1000 What happened with the "revenge" Neuheisel vowed after the game when he said "we won't foget this"? Fine - don't forget it, but don't insinuate you or your team can or will do anything about it then get soundly beaten by the Trojans - at home no less - the following season! The entire UCLA football program has never really recovered from their end-of-season loss to Miami in '98. They were 4-points away from the BCS title game. Now they can't even scrape together a winning season.
Whatever happened to Gary Beban? Did he ever have an NFL career?
aint no mud in LA, baby...
Is the play UCLA ran at the 4:33 mark of this video even legal today?
yea oj sliced thru the bruin line like a knife across nicoles throat
did ucla even get the football in this game? i've never seen a highlight video of one team. did you steal this from notre dame's defense coach?
the video fails to effectively capture the intensity of the game or narrate the key plays.
he ruined my acid trip a year later.
Was Gary Beban the UCLA quarterback?
Yep
THe people who sat on that far right end one had end zone had the worst seats.
no offense, but if you look at the rest of sckego's videos, it's the same thing, all SC and nothing else.
what about the OSU Beavs that year ???
your showing off they tied UCLA and beat USC 3-0 at home that year they finished 7-2-1 losing to BYU and Washington
Or the state penitentiary. lol
Actually, they're the same thing.
What was the point spread ?
beban was not the best player in the country for 3 years. his heisman win is one of the most hottly debated heisman debates ever. almost everyone believes O.J. hould have won this year and the following.
OJ is fucken great i don't care if he did it
GO BK....UCLA!!!
..yeah, a real "slashing" runner.
hows that for a rivalry game. pure kick-ass. bruins-gay, SC-sexiness.
Pirates!
This video is USC propaganda. If you watch it you'd be astonished UCLA scored any points at all, or even made a first down.
Seems you are just representing usc making it look like UCLA is terrible
Go UCLA
At UCLA it's the brand of condoms you can't buy.
but they cant take your exploits on the football field away
Thats funny....EVERYONE (except Bruin fans) knows Beban couldn't hold Simpson's jock strap. GET REAL
Signed
Life long Trojan Fan from Texas
including gettin away with murder
Does THE MOOSE have a favorite MLB team?
Who cares about the ad?
O.J. could Run with that Football. But that's all he was good for; period.
Nice run ... for a murderer.
USC!!! UNIVERSITY OF SPOILED CHILDREN!!!!!
