Written by Kris Kristofferson. It was the last song she recorded before she died. Sad. It's a great album. Try Mercedes Benz - it's a fun song. Move Over is good.
She was extraordinary. Sad fact: this song was her only #1 song and was released AFTER she died. The son'gs author, Kris Kristofferson, didn't even know she had recorded it until he heard her studio tape the day after she died. What a wonderful musician, one of my favorites- check out some of her appearances on the Dick Cavett talk show..... her personality was warm & honest and badass, just like her singing
"I'd trade all of my tomorrows for a single yesterday of holding Bobby's body next to mine." One of the greatest lines of all time, and this is one of the greatest recordings of all time. A song written by the legendary Kris Kristofferson and taken to majestic heights by Janis. This was from Janis' second (and final) solo album, the brilliant Pearl. Sadly, she didn't live long enough to enjoy the fruits of her labor, as she died shortly before the album was released. Janis was already a star, but she achieved superstardom after death, so much so that most people don't even realize that when they hear Janis singing on the radio, most of those songs are not actually her songs but are from when she was the lead singer of Big Brother & The Holding Company.
She was not strong, she was a poor wee soul. I've always wanted to be able to just give her a hug. She never accepted how good she was, she had been destroyed by bullying. Damn she could sing though, and I very much agree she turned her pain into poetry.
well said.... she had pure texas fight in her.... if you are raised there in s texas & can endure the heat, the hard work & a tough culture... you come out as one tough sob.... she was as tender but tough as nails too.... very sad she passed far too early.
@@jonnylumberjack6223 your wrong... she was tormented no doubt. & she hurt deeply.... but your straight up wrong about her strength... she was as tough as they come, man or woman. if you know the hell hole she came up out of, you'd realize that... beaumont texas was a brutal oil town & she came of age in it not only w/ its darwin economics but also in a very rigid, jim crow, bible belt social order. she was made fun of constantly for her acne, her tom boy ways & her artistic beatnik sensibilities. imagine that inner hurt she absorbed. yet, she endured thru that & willed her way into never giving up on her musical dreams. she took major risk in doing it & had the will to stake out on her own in frisco. think about the inner strength that took. I would say her strength went hand in hand depth wise w/ her pain and torment.
Everyone has to experience Janis! I love "Piece of My Heart", but this song is my favorite! It has it all ... her soulful voice, catchy music and a great story ... who could want more? I loved your reaction ... so excited. Thank you.
This song was written by Kris Kristofferson who's also an actor. If anyone here has ever watched the movie Blade with Wesley Snipes Kris was his assistant. He was also in the 70' remake of A STAR IS BORN with Barbara Striesand ( I think the original was with Judy Garland in the 40's).
You ARE in a church when Janis is singing and that organ gets going!! This is my favorite Janis song. I knew you’d love it! I sing it all the time. Kris Kristofferson wrote it. He wrote so many of other artists’ best songs! He sang this one too, but Janis’ version is best. It was released after she died & hit number 1. I have to make another request for Big Mama Thornton too, since she was Janis Joplin’s biggest influence! I can’t pick a favorite but lately I listen to “My Heavy Load” all the dang time. My grandpa recorded several of her earliest singles & those are all great, too, especially “Hound Dog” & “Let Your Tears Fall, Baby.” But it’s her later work that influenced Janis Joplin more, like “Ball and Chain,” which Janis covered beautifully. These ladies are two of the best ever!! PS. One of my other favorites that Kris Kristofferson wrote is Sunday Morning Coming Down by Johnny Cash. What a poet!
Pam Chilton You’re in luck! Hurt is the one Cash song he’s done! I vote for “Man in Black” next. What do you think? ua-cam.com/video/a51WX0wBwnA/v-deo.html

Janis Joplin...what a voice and talent.....my opinion is that she is and will always be the best female vocalist of her time. There’s the old saying, “she was way before her time.” I’ll always believe that. She had a great soul and knew how to put it in her music with such passion. Truly, truly missed!
Oh yes! That is a great movie. Remember seeing it at the movie theater in 1979. I made a boyfriend take me to see it and he fussed about it the whole way. Boy did he change his toon when the movie was over. He told all his friends how great the movie was. Good times!
I love that movie! The title song is so incredible. Goosebumps every time. Bette Midler turned down parts in Rocky, Foul Play, and Nashville to play that role. Smart move, Bette!!
This song was written by Kris Kristopherson, who wrote a bunch of great songs. One of my favorites is Sunday Morning Coming Down. Johnny Cash has a great cover of it.
Gordon Lightfoot was interviewed and asked what song that was written by another artist that he wish he had written? His answer was Sunday Morning Coming Down. Jovaughn, you should react to the Johnny Cash version of that.

Well, here's the story of the first time I heard this song ... I had been thrown into juvie jail - officially called "Juvenile Offenders Detention Facility" - as to why, that's another whole tale. Short version, my best friend and I had run off to Canada and after 3 months on our own, had been caught and brought back. They had a local rock station piped into the rooms to try to keep the inmates a bit less restless. The matron walked me into my "room" (cell) and the door closed behind me, and I turned around and saw that the door had no knob or handle on the inside. At that moment, "Me and Bobby McGee" started playing. It's engraved on my soul forever. I was 14 and thought I knew everything. The older I get, the less I know. I remember, whenever the song "Knock Three Times" would come on the radio, we would all pound on the walls and doors in time with the "knock three times" line.
And he consoled Shinehead O’ Conner when she irreverently played her own song at Bob Dylan’s 30th anniversary celebrating Bobs music , she was booed off the stage. She really showed her @ss.

Janis was teased and picked on growing up. Called all kinds of names. She was in the all-time great class like a Billie Holiday. Try the simple but heartfelt song Mercedes Benz, which described her struggles. Sadly, she died three days after recording it.
Janis was my idol growing up in the 70s and 80s! She was so unique, and was good with that! 💜 Great song & reaction, Jay! Thank you! You gotta react to Down On Me while she led Big Brother & the Holding Company, and Mercedes Benz from the album Pearl. That was her last album and was released 3 months after her death. RIP Pearl
You are so darn handsome! Loved how you found Janis! Tender soul! One of the 27 club. How did we lose Janis, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Bruce Lee that were so young? Too many to names, lost them too soon. RIP 💞✌

She has such an amazing, bluesy type of voice. I love this song. She was before my time, I was about 5 when she died I think. But I've heard her. She's from Texas, so a lot of people around her love her. Your reaction is great!!
“One day up near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away He's lookin' for that home, and I hope he finds it But, I'd trade all of my tomorrows, for a single yesterday To be holdin' Bobby's body next to mine” They made it to California: the Promise land. Heard this song sung by Kris Kristofferson too, cool song ,nice reaction. A singer called Elkie Brooks sort of reminds me a little of Janis Joplin, very bluesey A Piece of My Heart is another great Janis J song

I loved her music. I vividly remember, as a teen, Dad yelling downstairs to my bedroom, 'TURN DOWN THE BOOM BOOM MACHINE'. It was often Janis I'd have cranked right up. Thanks for always bringing me good memories!
interesting story on youtube of Kris Kristofferson talking about how she recorded the song and died before it was released. It jump-started his career while hers ended suddenly. funny how life works. You should play some Kristofferson "Help Me Make It Through the Night" "Why Me Lord" "Loving her was Easier" "Sunday Morning"

I think everyone who has ever heard this song walks away with that line, "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose" forever seared into their memory. It's like a bolt of lightening. Thanks, as always, to the great reaction!
One of my favorites, but......it just "ends." I mean they spend all that time getting it cranked up and....it just "ends." I wish it would continue a bit longer.
Bruddah...I have never had so much fun watching a reactor have so much fun reacting to one of my all time favorite songs. I wish I could get my kids who are probably your age to appreciate greatness like this. Written by one of the best song writers of all time. Janice could sing like no other.
Would you not have heard of Janis Joplin due to genre of music? Your culture? Your age -different generation? Just curious. Good to break down barriers.
Wow ! So much soul in her voice ! She didn't fit the mould of a pop star but that's what made her so unique ! Man, could she belt out a song. Light & shade. Perfect !
“Freedom is just another word for nothin left to lose!” One of the greatest lyrics of all time!
"I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday" is one that gets me every time.

THe first time that Kris heard Janis's recording she was dead. Look for the interview and how heartbroken he was,

Janis turned pain into poetry. She never rolled over, stood strong and kicked it out.

So true....he's involved, in the moment, hears and feels then shares his experience.
I like Jamel aka Jamal too. But I like Jay best because he always starts doing the "yea yea" at my favorite parts. :D
Yeah...they should have faded it out slowly.
art imitates life, I suppose
It's perfect as is.
Bruddah...I have never had so much fun watching a reactor have so much fun reacting to one of my all time favorite songs. I wish I could get my kids who are probably your age to appreciate greatness like this. Written by one of the best song writers of all time. Janice could sing like no other.
Sometimes I wish she hadn't traded all her tomorrows for a yesterday.
My favorite Janis song. 💗
Would you not have heard of Janis Joplin due to genre of music? Your culture? Your age -different generation? Just curious. Good to break down barriers.
This whole Pearl album is great. It was released after her death. Every girl in my dorm had it in 1971 and we all played it constantly. Many memories.
Your enjoyment of this classic 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Pure joy in your reaction. Love it
Wow ! So much soul in her voice ! She didn't fit the mould of a pop star but that's what made her so unique ! Man, could she belt out a song. Light & shade. Perfect !
I sooooo love her voice....... Pure talent....... Best reaction EVER. ❤️
So bluesy so soulful...love this...
.. This woman touches my soul and makes me cry.. Beautiful
