I have one just like that, works perfect. When you tighten the knob down, that makes the connection, and there should be no play. Looks like yours may have been cross-threaded, in that case it won't tighten down all the way. When you loosen the knob about 1 turn, that should disconnect the battery.

Does this thing make it so that the engine doesn’t start when it’s disconnected?
