I have the Supermoto version here, the Xt660x and it's an absolute joy, power is enough, blasting from corner to corner and there are barely any other motorcycles that can keep up on a curvy road. Currently I have 45.000km put on it and it still runs like a champ without a single issue, even after standing still for a few months this Xt will always start whilst I have to push start the other motorcycles at home. Got a Tom Tom Rider 400 last year and have been exploring a lot. 250km with a full tank before going on reserve and this whilst twisting thz throttle very often. The only downside is the occasional stalling, but you learn to live with it. The stats of the bike are more then enough to have a ton of fun in the Belgian Ardennes.

XTR does have weak front brake, but "supermoto" twin, XTX fixes that issue. Weaving on roads might come from knobby tyres. Cutting out at low rpms usually comes from too low idle revs, early production models had faulty TPS and dodgy ECU though. Stock exhaust is obscenely heavy indeed, 2in1 exhaust mod is simple way of shaving 10kgs off the bike as well increasing ground clearance. Display holds surprisingly elaborate diagnostic mode, showing a lot of data - throttle position, tachometer, air/coolant temp, battery voltage, lean indicator, checks for cooling fan, fuel injector, spark plug, handy for DIY It is not performance bike, but then it lasts with only basic maintenance required (oil change every 10k, valves screw type every 20k). Basically modernized DR650 or KLR 650 with FI, even if tad obese.
It's so easy to give a harsh review on a bike that is not produced anymore. No worries about the manufacturer anger!!! This xt is a very good bike. Little money for huge fun!!! It can take you anywhere on and off road on a low maintenance and fuel budget!!! Plus the low profile! It's in the same category as the KLR or DR but more reliable and more capable off road! Also the long range maintenance on it is incredible!!!! I'm sure it's because you had a rental that you had such bad sensations! Also maybe you are too used to the modern bikes with all the electronic assistance that obliges you to go back to the manufacturer for every repair! Stay safe and have fun!
If ever you are renting a bike on your travels, there's a good chance you'll end up with this :D Quite a fun bike, unless you are given a bike with what would feel like plastic wheels, squared off in the back. A nightmare thing to ride for instance in narrow winding roads of Greece :D Also older versions were quite abysmal to ride in the city (about 50 km/h 35mph) due to shitty fuel injection. The bike would jerk back-and-forth like a deer with hick-ups.. But other than that, as said - a wonderful thing!
For me high speed wobble happens from wind hitting your shoulders when you're holding the bars too tight. I understand other things can come into play but next time you have this issue, loosen up and pay attention to the buffeting on your shoulders.
I have 2 2007 xt660r one with 5000 miles the other with 8,000 miles both show room condition 1 owner bikes (me the second). Only thing i would say is if using in the wet ACF50 the engine as the paint will come off the engine and look really poor. but overall as a slower bike i would give it the thumbs up. the xt660x is a much better ride (i had one). but you will find they are around £1000 more than the xt660R for the same year.If buying one hold out for a good one they are out there, don't just buy the cheapest it will cost you in the long run. Hi, I rode on XT 660 R over 20 000 km. Stalling was only problem when the low rpm screw in throttle was set to too low rpms. I haven't any technical problems beside oil consumption. It's great bike, but I switched to KTM 690 - lower weight, better ground clearance, better chasis, great brakes and powerfull engine - all what XT needs. Just my thoughts from practice.

It's the 21" wheel that has the weave. Mine's like a drunken sailor over 65mph and both wheels are perfectly balanced. Worth it to be able to ride trails though.
I'd take those comments about the brakes with grain of salt, because off road tires suck at tarmac. I have the X version and I never felt the brakes weren't good enough, but yeah don't hit the rear brake too hard. Suspension is not great I'll agree with that, especially the rear suspension.
@@dbauernf If that's true then I stand corrected. I thought they have same brakes. edit. Looked it up and yeah the x has much better front brakes, but I think the rear brake is the same at least in specs wise.
The xt,s have got heavier through the years, ktm have took the dirt/trail bike scene, they make their newer models lighter than previous models, unlike honda and yamaha
Great review! Thanks. I solved definitely my staling problem by raising a tiny bit the throttle on my 2010 MT03/660cc which has the same engine/problem as your Tenere: If you don't know that version, have a look at UA-cam "2007 Yamaha MT 03 | Owners Review" :) Also, I have the same handguards & I love them; they saved my bike a few scratches...
I agree with Matt. Mine had almost 125000km/78000mls on the clock when I sold it for my current XT1200, and everything was still 100%. Didn't have to top up any fluids except fuel. Really an awesome, reliable bike
My 97 DR does 5L/100km in medium dirt all day, (hard turning of the knob will be 6,5L at the most) therefore NOT impressed AT ALL with the fuel consumption! (Given the 21year tech advantage).
It is beyond me that this bike never made it to the US… even Suzuki and Honda kept their 650 unchanged and carb’ed thumpers (DR and XR) in play until 2024… with EFI and at least front ABS and at a low price this bike would have made a big impact in the Enduro scene….
The Tenere T7 would blow this thing out of the swamp. If Yamaha would ever manufacture the thing. MotoGeo, correction on the fuel capacity you displayed. 15 liters is 3.96 US gal, not 3.3 US gal.
The bike stall because yamaha have been forced to design the bikes to run too lean (emissions) which is much easier to get away with when you have more than one cylinder... cure is the Kev mod (Google) .... or better still, find yourself a bmw x country 160kg (XT 180 kg), 52 hp (XT 48 hp), not top heavy like the XT, they have a fairly low seat height (I'm 5'9" and feet flat on floor), the Rotax engine will pull from very low revs unlike the XT and they're fairly inexpensive as they stopped making them after 2009. The only downside is less ground clearance.... These are the reasons I sold my Xt660 and bought the x country, even just moving the bike around my garage is much easier due to the low centre of gravity :)
@@vakantieman3270 he said the breaks were rubbish on road, and pretty poor off road, the bike was heavy, if you ride over a certain speed it starts to swerve and weave and at low revs it cuts out and stalls. Yeah sounds really safe and reliable.
Nialsy999 Well mine has been really safe and relliable, and I use it to go to work everyday (50km), used it on long trips and a lot of offroad. This being said, I changed the front fork for a ohlins USD, and metal hoses on the front brake (sorry for my english I dont know if thats the correct term) and it made a world of diference, next up its changing the exhaust for something lighter than that horrible 12 kilos cans.. Its my 10th bike and so far I'm loving it, not a ktm race machine but never skips a beat with 50.000 kms on it
@@Nialsy999 Nah, I owned this bike for years. The front brake is fine, the rear is fine and he has a wobble because he's on dirt tires. I rode mine at 160 km/h for my 50km commute for over a year with a 50/50 tire, no wobble. It has some fuelling issues but nothing serious (and fixable with a power commander or a cheap mod). Sound awesome with after market cans.

It's the 21" wheel that has the weave. Mine's like a drunken sailor over 65mph and both wheels are perfectly balanced. Worth it to be able to ride trails though.
If I add extra Led lights des it couse any problem from battery?
Não
I'd take those comments about the brakes with grain of salt, because off road tires suck at tarmac. I have the X version and I never felt the brakes weren't good enough, but yeah don't hit the rear brake too hard. Suspension is not great I'll agree with that, especially the rear suspension.
X has different brakes.
How much can I get a used one like the one you are showing
all we do here in canada is trail ride and we never never get the nice models from japanese bikes
Good review. Thx.
XT... MY LOVE❤️
Sounds pretty similar to my old xt600e.
Good vid thanks
Great review! Thanks. I solved definitely my staling problem by raising a tiny bit the throttle on my 2010 MT03/660cc which has the same engine/problem as your Tenere: If you don't know that version, have a look at UA-cam "2007 Yamaha MT 03 | Owners Review" :) Also, I have the same handguards & I love them; they saved my bike a few scratches...
CB500x or 2011 Tenere 660z?
I want here in EEUU but I can’t find this one here
Quality, honest review. 👍
Why doesn’t that come to the USA 🇺🇸. That’s Yamahas middleweight dual sport 😮😍
Needs the smaller (14t) front sprocket.
Is it available in the US ?
Why buy wind protection if you can buy xt660z tenere. Same engine and bit more weight. Stalling can be eliminated via power commander and dyno tune.
How reliable are these bikes? Engines in particular?
There bullet proof.
How tall are You?
Why isnt this in USA?
because you have the ttr125 of course!

WOW! MY FRIEND.,.,NICE .,.,.
I had the XT 550 (1982).
After this review, totally not interested.
wish e had this bike in america
You would have if it wasnt for Yamaha France. They wouldnt sell it to the Japanese or other markets because they "designed it".
I like my raptor 660r
A meiota do Brasil
Its a wheelie machine, just saying...
Roughly translated the bike is shit. Good to hear honesty. Lol
If al you care about is performance. I kinda like. Reliable bike.
Its my 10th bike and so far I'm loving it, not a ktm race machine but never skips a beat with 50.000 kms on it
Ill take that shit bike over a bmw any day.
The comments about the bike make me think you know very little about the niche this bike lives in. Kind of sad you completely missed the point of the bike
“This is a heavy bike” Are you fucking serious?
I love this bike but I'm 5'3... shit
Meu co moro Ana polis go brasil
Are you sure it’s not a KLR in Yamaha clothes?
maybe he's afraid of an old Yamaha
You can't review a damaged bike.
pure juck.
More of a slating than a review
Jamie can't seem to win; for years people have complained that his reviews were a bit soft. Is there some Goldilocks zone? Having ridden one for a few weeks I thought his comments were spot on.
@@dougkearns Why so serious? The only thing I omitted was a smiley emoji
@@johna6968 I'm never serious in the YT comments. I guess I read it more as though it was missing an eye-roll emoji than a smiley. :)
I don't think this bike knows what sort bike it is suppose to be . sounds like a donkey to me 😁
