Traditionally, we use tempe and tofu instead of meat so the dish always give a healthy, all-vegetables vibe. Based on my personal experience, the peanut sauce you make yourself with mortar and pestle (make it chunky) taste way better than commercial peanut butter in a jar.
Also, I'll recommend Rujak, Pecel, and Urap, the other less known Indonesian's traditional salad that also taste just as good.
thank you! do you have any favorite indonesian creators that you'd like to shoutout for reference?
@@limpbread My favorite go-to is Devina Hermawan.
For the rujak, I think the rujak buah (fruit rujak) is kinda weird for foreigners because it's fruit but it taste savory and spicy, rujak with vegetable with peanut sauce is great I think🤔
@@limpbread If by 'Indonesian creators' you mean Indonesian UA-cam cooks, you should try Dapur Dina ua-cam.com/channels/WCiUtToQIAtkB8ao8au-LQ.html
and Nikmatul Rosidah ua-cam.com/users/NikmatulRosidah
Both are quite prolific and I have found many authentic recipes on their channels.

Don't forget karedok!
Hi Marion, This is one of my favourite dish. But here in Indonesia we use crushed fried peanut and tamarind water instead of fish sauce so the peanut sauce have some crispy texture sensation when you bite it with the salad. Oh and also add the shrimp cracker and melinjo cracker for extra flavor. There also some boiled and raw vegetable but it has some variety depends on some region. Last, for the carbs sometimes it has "lontong" Made from boiled rice inside cylindrical shape banana leaves 👍Maybe its different from how Gado-gado was Made in my country but I really enjoy watch this video. Thank you Marion 🙏
Julia covered it all. In usa I use chunky peanut butter , kecap manis if all possible and if availavle fresh kaffirlime leaves. I got 2 plants in the garden... in oahu hawaii. Hard to find but you can order via your nurseries. Fyi...
Thank you for sharing! I dont have fish sauce on hand so tamarind juice seems like an excellent substitute. I'm curious, is this dish a meal on its own? Do you eat it with something else?
@@mariatan9129 Thank you for your information Maria 👍 I forgot to add kecap manis but you complete it 🙏
@@minhng575 Please use only few of tamarind water to replace fish sauce. usually we ate it on it's own. It makes our stomach full because of its complete ingredient especially if it has crackers and "lontong". Pardon me if i'm not good in explaining 🙏
@@bulanjuliap no worries! Ok so not too much tamarind... Can't wait to try thanks again Julia 😁🙏
My Cado Cado tomorrow includes: Kidney Beans, Bush Beans, white Winter Cabbage, boiled Potatoes, Air Fry Potatoes wedges, Carrots, Cellery, boild and fried Eggs. Also Spinach in blanced and fresh Versions, Tomatoe, Cucumber, grated Beetroot, Red Onions, fried Tofu pockets (Inari Age, Japan), fried Onion Crispies... Sauce: Juncky Peanututter, Gochujang, Lime Juice, Sugar, Soy Sauce, Garlic (softend by very hot Peanaut oil), Black Pepper, Water, Coconut Liguid (made by myself), Sea Salt, Fishsauce NamPla... I'm really not Vegetarian (so do not anybody get too exited at all - thinking one of US [not Coutry]) - But, I coud add in there Kebab in any variations - Chicken, Lamm, Beef, Turkey (not Country - whitch is now Türkiye) - Whatever you like - even Fish (canned, fresh, cooked, steamed, fried etc.). Mussels, Crabs, Shrimps any kind, also smoked - Think your way... Oh, I might add some canned Tuna... Marion did very good job and made me loud for something so good...
Marion finally made her version of Gado2😀👍
Gado2 n pecel both r javanese ppl salads👍
Gado2 original doesnt contain chicken/ any meat at all.
The peanut sauce is mixed up w coconut milk , thus the mild peanut flavor❤️❤️
Add some crispy fried shallots & melinjo chips to make it perfect , mild n perfect🤗💖
Meanwhile pecel only uses peanut sauce n usually mixed up w hot chilies. Tastes much harsher than gado2 , but perfect 4 chili lovers😸😱
It is irrelevant to the recipe, but I love that your outfit matched the turmeric. What a wonderful colour.
So true 🤩😍
Usually we use tempeh and tofu as the protein, but chicken is a good idea! Gonna try it soon. Thanks, Marion. You're a genius🎉
How do you use tempeh?
@@bastianversteeg9221 Fried with oil or bake/air fryer the tempeh, then cut into small pieces, mix with the vegetables & gado-gado sauce.
But then the flavour is really low, right? I've tried this once, but it came out a bit fatty and (for lack of a better word) dusty. Had the oil hot enough to get it at least crispy on all the outside.
There are many versions of gado gado, this one is Marion's! Just chill..
OMG marion just make a video of gado gado!! Proud 🇮🇩👍🏼
Love this recipe Marion. And using that cast iron to allow for the crunchiness on the outside of the chicken, genius!
It's always a pleasure to learn from your work. Thank you.
Happy cooking,
UB
I used to serve this regularly when my children were young, but starting to get fussy. It gave them the opportunity to choose what they wanted while I was sure they got a nutritious meal...which I loved having spent time in Indonesia.
Hi Marion, thank you for sharing the gado2 recipe. Actually here in Indonesia there are many version for the gado-gado sauce, some use mix peanut and cashew nut, some also use tumeric to the sauce.
Pecal/gado gado for the win. I think for Indonesians, these are slightly different but in my house, they're basically the same thing. Always a staple side dish during Ramadhan at home!
Thank you, Marion!!! Was looking for a salad for our potluck dinner this week!!! Perfect!!! 💖💖💖
Thanks for sharing this recipe, Marion! Tempeh (fried or steamed) goes well with this dish..the unique flavour of fermented soy bean in tempeh really complements the taste of the peanut sauce..

The guy who records this and the editor are fantastic
I absolutely love your videos. There’s just something about them. Thanks so much Marion and the team.
Good morning Marion, wow another great recipe to eat with my husband. We love salads & I love that you used chicken. The dressing sounds like it tasted amazing as well. Thank for this yummy recipe!! Have a wonderful weekend. ♥️
Going to try this , have all the ingredients. Thanks 😊
Love your recipes Marion can't wait for the next one!
This looks delicious 😍❤️
Loooove this salad !!! Thank you 🙏
Nice ! Gado-gado is a such comforting yet satisfying dish. Thanks a lot Marion. I'm Indonesian and I don't know how to make gado-gado since you can buy it anywhere . And I definitely will try your version! Looks yum😍
One more yummy from my favourite 😘
I love Gado-gado.. So yummy
🤤🤤🤤
Will definitely be making this soon
It's so great yummy
I really appreciate how you often refer to "choose your own adventure" for aspects of your recipies, so that we can feel free to experiment or leave out anything we may not like. That said, I'm always 110% behind your use of chilli and/or garlic for things; if anything, I thought you went a bit mild for this sauce! 😆
Edit: it's also summer here in Australia, so more fun/tasty salad options would be welcome; thank you! ❤
I’m 9yo from Melbourne, I love your videos! Can you make a video cooking outdoors that’s going to be great! Lawrence.
Pee kap, this is my fave salad!
The grilled chicken looks amazing
I just bought a bamboo steamer basket. Would you mind doing a quick video with root veggies and lobster tails? Along with your cleaning process, after use. There really isn’t much on UA-cam with this combination. Please and thank you! I love your videos! ❤️
Thank you, I can take the sugar out of this salad and make it easy Keto...love your video...🌞🦋🌻
Great idea!
If your keto can also include erythritol as a sweetener, it works well in many recipes. (I'm on a low-sugar diet). While this sweetener misses out on the caramel-y fragrance of palm sugar, a hint of sweetness just helps balance the spicy, sour, salty and umami seasonings in the peanut dressing.
I also try to go keto as best I can but sometimes I don’t mind just using the palm sugar because it is only once in a while making this kind of recipe.
So simple!!
In suriname, This is also one of the suriname kitchen.
We have India, chinese, native indian, Javanese, afrocreole, european kitchen.
That really is yumm
Made this last night for dinner and it blew our tiny minds. That sauce!!! So happy for lunch leftovers today. Thanks for another winning recipe Marion! Oh and I substituted soy sauce for fish sauce due to allergies and it was so good.
Yay!!! So happy you loved it Amy! ❤️ Thanks for coming back to let me know!
Actually this feels more like satay with salad hehehe
One of the few salads I tolerate. 👍
Thank you, Marion.
Love your content and cadence!
plz make more salads like this Thx.
Great video. Do you have a Thai salad video?
Yeayy, finally indonesian dish!
Thanks chef
I'm going to add tofu in place of the potatoes! Making it tomorrow! I can't wait, especially for that sauce. Yum
YUM!
You are a legend Marion
Aw thank you!
I love all of it except red cabbage.
Hi Marlon, excellent ideas to add chicken in gado gado. I'd would like to try it. It looks so delicious.
hhmm yum
please cook also Batagor
👍
Marian is making Thai Chicken Satay, dress it with some vegetables and calling it Gado-gado.
I ain't fooled by this lol
Never seen one with chicken before, but this will be great for my meat eating child, tofu for me though. Can't wait to make an easy recipe, usually i grind the nuts..etc..so this is why i hardly make my fav dish now - that can change now i have seen your sauce!
Nice video.
NICE
"I'm a legs and thighs girl" and "Go your own adventure." T-shirts...now.
Lovely food and the name as well😂
Gado-gado is the best food for vegan
Marion what blender do you have? I'm on the hunt for a good one! :D
I like how you cut the cucumbers 🥒
I know your work is fusion food and i used to love it, but I’m sorry it’s not gado gado. Maybe chicken salad with peanut butter sauce 🤷🏻♀️
That was so much fish sauce! Its so strong, any Indonesian input?
We do not generally use fish sauce in Indonesia. I guess fish sauce is used here for its sourness, and to replace tamarind, but I don't think the two taste the same.
Is that what those skewers are for. I use them in my art room. I like them more with that chicken on them and I think most of that salad is diabetic legal. Thank you. ❤️
Hey Marion, if yr allergic to peanuts, which nuts would you recommend as an alternative in most of your recipes, or does it depend on the dish? Cld I use almonds or cashews in this? Cheers!
Cashews are super creamy and rich when you blend them up. They're probably a solid replacement
I'm Indonesian and I confirm that you can use cashew to substitute the peanut in this recipe 👍🏻👍🏻
That's great. Thanks guys.
err, if its allergy, consult a doctor?
@@laurence82
Um, i already did, thats why i know i have it and why i always avoid peanuts...
I'm just asking which other nuts wld complement the authenticity of the recipe.
👍😊💖
I dig your eyeglasses! Would you mind telling me what the brand is, please? Cheers!
They are from retro super future and the style is ciccio in matte black 😊
@@Marionskitchen, thank you so much!
What would you suggest if your allergic to peanuts as an alternative?
Please can I request a chilli paste video...
Hi Marion😀 Thanks for sharing this recipe in you channel. However, IMHO, it would be more appropriate to call this recipe as an “Improvised” version by you. Because as we Asian know, the traditional recipe and ingredients were slightly different. However, this would be a good substitute for those who were not able to find the original ingredients such as tempeh, tofu, etc.😊
Actually gado2 Makes it simple. You can add fry peanuts
Hahahaha - " a whole clove of garlic"? I add at LEAST 6 to ANYTHING!
Reminds me of nicoise salad
Indonesians always made it spicy 🥵
Chilli's are not spicy. Just burning sensation. It's garlic and onion that makes it spicy and hot.
Hello
@1:33 - what was the white liquid that was added? Thanks
Coconut milk
how come never seen before? That's my food at Indonesia cause I am Indonesian😅
Every time I try to look at the written recipe on my phone the website basically breaks??
I read that as Gal Gadot😂
I still can't get used to you talking while mouth is full 😜
Gado Gado made with blanched /cooked vegetables never raw
And never with meat
So can't call this Gado Gado
Right , theyre all cooked except the cucumbers n tomatoes these 2 always fresh
Gado gado should have all the ingredients mixed together with the sauce, not eaten separately. Shouldn't have any meat in it except for the shrimp paste. Also, this is more like 'Karedok' which is the raw veg version of gado gado. Gado gado should have cooked/blanched veggies except cucumber. I know it's your version but sorry, it's not a good representation and rendition of what it should be. It's not good to call something gado gado when it is far off what it should be - I just do not want foodies new to this dish to find out it's not a nice version of what it should be.
Are you cooking Thai or Indonesian? Is this a Indonesian inspired thai dish😂😂😂
Wao Thai cuisine using Vietnamese fish sauce for Thai cuisine why .what is Thai cuture ?
Meat in gado gado ? That doesnt mesh at all…
This is anything BUT Gado Gado, especially not Indonesian Gado Gado! Gado Gado is a salad, NOT a meat dish with salad. Almost everything is wrong here except for the beansprouts, eggs, potatoes and cucumber.
The worst is the sauce.... you do NOT use peanut butter in any shape or form. You make it yourself from peanuts, it's not difficult but tastes much better.
This is quite disgusting. Another extravaganza of Marion excesses.

Get off your blood pressure medicine. She specifically said its' her version of gado gado, so I wouldn't expect it to be in the traditional sense. If you really dont like this channel, dont know why you are hanging around to watch 'another extravaganza of Marion excesses'.
Relax... lah . We cant have all in true native scale. For sake of time n convenience and reproduction we have to adjust to whats available in your local store... krupuk from sidoardjo and melindjo are rare...and hard to find. Japanese lighter crackers if you are desperate lol. And make your own pickled cucumber as well. Sometimes the company is so appreciative of your effort... chill sista!!
Anyway she never said it "traditional" but her version so please calm.
Your comment is what’s disgusting
Such malice for a food recipe 🤦♀️ why
Turn her off instead of lurking in the comments 😂
uncle roger isnt going to be happy with that peanut butter.
