I had weight loss surgery 4 years ago and they told me the same thing; no soda, no coffee, no carbs. They also didn't factor in that I was diagnosed with celiacs disease a month before my surgery, so a lot of the foods they told me to eat, I can't have them, including a lot of the protein drinks. Ultimately I had to figure out what works for me and you're right, everyone has different needs regarding weight loss. I lost 150 total and gained back 40lbs, which for me is okay because I know I finally have improved gut health.

I’m so excited you did this video. I got VSG 12/13/21 in hopes to one day have a baby. I have successfully lost 110 pounds and currently 15 weeks pregnant 💕💕
I literally ALWAYS used a straw and I drink carbonated drinks lol also!!! I eat carbs 🙌🏼🙌🏼 coming from a strict Keri diet, I almost fell out of my chair when my dietitian told me I’m allowed carbs!
There’s so many myths about having the surgery!
I will say the most important thing is being MENTALLY prepared!

I had a complete open Roux-en-Y 24 years ago. I weighed in excess of 500 lbs before surgery. There have been huge ups and downs since then, but worth it. My lowest weight after surgery was 182 pounds, but I was very unhealthy because it came off very fast. I still cannot eat the same way i did preoperatively and have found that I feel my healthiest around 220 pounds. I know a lot of people think that is still overweight, and it is, it is a huge improvement for me . I have had to really listen to my body and stop where she feels the best. My goal now is to feel healthy no matter where the numbers are. That is where my freedom came. Love your channel.

Man this video spoke to me! Bariatric surgery x2 here 2009 and 2015.
You are so right. At first had the band. Lost 100lbs because I threw up everything for 6 years! I did not tell my Dr because was losing. When I told him he deflated it and I gained weight asap. 2015 we took it out and did the sleeve. I have gained 30 lbs.
I know I need to work on me. I am steady making changes. Trying to be the best version of me.
    Thanks for sharing

I had weight loss surgery. I went from 388 lbs to 135. 253 LBS. I have kept it off since. I had my surgery in 2009. Having the surgery is NOT the easy way out. Totally NOT. It is very hard. Which surgery did you have? My husband has been really frustrated with his weight loss journey - at most he lost 40 pounds with strict keto and exercise. He gained it back and didn't even go back to his old eating habits. He's dabbled in the idea, but I think he might be at this point. He has about 150 pounds to lose.

I never wanted surgery. I didn't think it was a quick solution, because it is surgery! So when people say it is a quick fix to me it is like comparing it to a c section being the easy way out... lol I never understood how people think being cut open would be easy. I went on KETO for 1 year and then switched to calories. I think the reason why you are losing slowly is because you are doing it right! You are not starving yourself. You have a small calorie deficit so that you can eat in a lifestyle that you can sustain. This is also what I am doing, and even though it is slow, it is probably the best thing for us and our bodies. I love your videos. Thank you for sharing 🙂

If you are having a super hard time losing weight still, I would advise you to either ask your primary to check your cortisol, prolactin, and acth. If your doctor refuses, order it yourself through walkinlab. You might be raising your cortsiol super high by drinking so much caffeine. I have cortisol issues regardless of whether I drink caffeine or not. But some people make it much harder on themselves to lose weight by chugging caffeine. There's whole forums that talk about ppl giving up caffeine of 30 days and drastically losing weight from no other changes made.

I have never related more to a VSG patient more then I relate to you!! I had VSG in 2020 lost 65 pounds, hit the gym 5/6 days a week, eat a 80/20 diet, had skin removal/ Lipo in 2022 and I’m literally up 20lbs from my lowest of 169 😩 I had to literally delete all the women who lists 100+ and have these banging bodies now because it’s a mind f*** and I know summer was busy. We were on our motorcycles a lot so we were eating out more but hell!! It’s annoying to put our bodies through all that to go right back to where we started. I am also 43 and the hormones have now also kicked in. Like you I don’t regret my surgery one bit, but I wish I healed my eating disorder first and took more advantage of that in the beginning. I love your videos and so glad I found you!

I had WLS… gastric sleeve in 2013 and was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Lost 180lbs and have still kept it all off. ( 306 to 135…. Achieved that in a year) Biggest thing was fixing my mentality around food and why I over ate like it did. I had therapy for a few years before surgery and that was HUGE for me and also has helped with my success. Win win.

I had a gastric bypass WAY back in 2003 at 308 pounds. I lost way down to 130lbs but looked sick. I was way to skinny for my body type. So, I purposely put on about 35 pounds and then kept around the 165’ish weight for the next 15-ish years…until 2020. The pandemic put me into a sedentary lifestyle. I went from being a 5 day a week road warrior to not leaving my house. Since 2020, I’ve gained 50 pounds and have been banging my head against the wall trying to get it off. Too bad that’s not burning enough calories! 😂 I’ve used your channel for encouragement and have made conscious efforts to get back on track. Stay well my friend! ❤

I am nearly 3 years out from gastric bypass. I've had great success and I agree some of the rules are unrealistic and some without proof. I have 1 coffee a day. 1 or 2 glasses of wine once a week. I do limit my carbs and sugar and stick with small portions with all meals. Drink at least 64 oz of water and take my vitamins. My restriction still works. I went from 200 lbs to 123 lbs. I maintain about 130 lbs. I'm 5 feet tall. The mental health portion can be a little bit of a struggle but I have more control of it now. I don't exercise much, but hope to change that.❤

I had VSG in January of this year and my experience with what the doctor and nutritionist was totally different. There was not one thing that they said I just couldn’t do for the rest of my life. I drank coffee in the hospital and continue to have it daily. As far as drinking alcohol, they advised me to not drink for a year because of the transfer addiction thing. I’ve already broken that rule… oops. I think the problem with diet culture in general is the all or nothing mentality. No carbs ever, no sugar ever, no alcohol, etc. is why so many of us fail when it comes to weight loss. I think your approach of things in moderation and slower weight loss is spot on and I can definitely see where that would help improve your overall relationship with food. Keep doing what your doing and making great content on your channel. I’m so glad you finally addressed your wls and shared your experience. I’ve been watching your channel for about 2 1/2 years and when I was trying to make my decision, I really wanted your opinion lol Thanks again for sharing. I’m a loyal watcher! Go Jen!!

Thank you so much for being so honest. This has been so eye opening. Reading the comments it’s obvious that this is something so many people struggle with. I think documenting your journey toward sustainable weight loss is inspiring. The before and after pictures leave out what it really takes to transform your mind and body.
Curious how your family is responding , and whether your kids are learning healthy eating from your example. I feel like it is so hard to turn around once kids have the taste of prepackaged sugary addictive food. And the husband as well, currently my husband has a stash of candy bars in the garage because we were trying to cut out all of the sweets.

You are so right about the year after should have been spent working on mental health and habits. I lost about 150 lbs but of course regained some. I have about 50 lbs I’m working on losing again. You’re such an encouragement and I don’t feel quite so down on myself after hearing you speak on this… ❤

100% resonated. 😢 change is hard. Not there yet but because you are doing it, it makes me feel like I could. My mom got yhe lap band and she she's the same thing to me. It's all about mindset. I only have 40 lbs, but it's still easy to look for an option not done putting in the effort by yourself.

This was a great video! Didn't know you had had WLS, but know many people that have. As a person who has dealt with disordered eating for years , I can relate to the struggle weight loss and maintenance can be. And as a retired RN, I laughed when you talked about nurses can be "bad" patients! Slightly guilty!! Keep up the good work!

You should be proud! You don't need my comment but I still want you to feel proud of yourself:) We working women often and most often put ourselves on the "back burner". Making time for the things that improve our health so we can care for others can be a daunting challenge. You are on your way with weight loss and knowledge and will get there in "your time". I am so happy for you:)!

You’re so good about eating most all your meals at home. I really hate eating at home all the time now I go through stages where I love to cook and then suddenly I’m burned out and just want to eat out all the time I want to say all the time I really just want to eat out once a day I could eat once a day and be fine long as I have my coffee in the morning and a little snack sometime during the day. But I’ve noticed that you’re so good about eating almost all your food at home.

I'm in a similar place as you. I had gastric sleeve in 2013 and little to no mental health follow up. My weight has been up and down but never have been able to sustain a healthy weight. A variety of events allowed me to get to my lowest in 2018. Apparently I ate my way through the pandemic. Trying to find the strength to start the journey again. All the best to you in your journey. Really enjoy your videos!

Good for you Jen, for not doing the meds that everyone is doing, sure they’re losing weight , but they haven’t changed the long term habits that got them there . Slow and steady is a better option, and it’s a lifestyle change you are so right 😀

Thank you, Jen, for this video. I've not had surgery, but I have struggled with my weight all my life. I exercise doing powerlifting and love this, however, I don't look like I can lift almost 500 pounds!! So frustrating. I am also mom of three, my youngest being 2 and a half. I am active. And like you, I eat somewhat healthy, very balanced meals. Trying to promote good eating for my kids. But it is a struggle and I feel like a failure all the time. Thank you for reaching out it means a lot to know I'm not alone. ❤

Thank you so much for doing this video. I need to lose 100 lbs myself, and this was great information from someone who has been through the VSG. I have a lot to think about. I love watching your videos. You always make such great food. Also, homemade crunch wraps are a favorite in my house and way better than Taco Bells. Thank you again.

I didn't have surgery but I have been up and down my whole life. I started watching Abbey Sharp and learning about intuitive eating and I am hopeful that will help me heal my relationship with food. It's definitely all about the mental game. If food is my main coping mechanism I need to find different ways to cope. I honestly don't care if I lose weight I just want to feel good and give my body the nutrition and movement it needs. You are crushing it and I love your food content it gives me so many ideas.

I had it in 2003 Gastric bypass. Long story short I’m 59 and still struggle with keeping it off. I can’t eat more then 1200 (I physically get dumping syndrome and reactive hypoglycemia) calories if I eat more then 800 I put weight back on. I was in weight watchers at 9 years old and those days and 10 pounds, overweight was considered fat will just leave it at that. Please everyone if you’ve had any type of bariatric surgery make sure you get the proper bariatric vitamins are you experiencing severe health issues like I am. Calcium multi and vitamins take them every day. Your life depends on it.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I am trying to loose the weight I gained after being on a program called Optavia. It was effective but expensive and it didn’t help my hormones much. I have been on a journey to understanding that there is no “good” or “bad” foods. I am learning that, yes I can eat carbs if I want to. But I am also learning what helps my stomach and what doesn’t. It’s definitely a learning process and we can’t beat ourselves up for having an “off day”. We’re human and need to show ourselves and others some much needed grace to be ourselves.
