  • Learn to self-critique your own painting with the "5 Dominations". The main part of this is to really stand back and ask yourself what needs to be fixed. Don't just guess... that's like trying to win the lottery. You have to identify what the problem is for you to fix it. The "5 Dominations" below will help you determine what might be bugging you in your painting.
    #1 DOMINATION OF MOTIVE
    Foreground | Middleground | Background - Small | Medium | Large
#2 DOMINATION OF CENTER OF INTEREST
Where is your center of interest? Is it working?
#3 DOMINATION OF DIRECTION OF LIGHT
Is it all coming from the same place? Do I Have a 70/30 split?
    #4 DOMINATION OF VALUE

    #5 DOMINANT TEMPERATURE

Probably THE hardest aspect of painting distilled into bite size chunks. - Still hard to swallow - but you seasoned it perfectly. Your ability to take such a complex issue and reduce it to clear, simple, interpretable visual language is a treasure. Much love.

Good one. A mathematically calculated approach to problem solving is a good tool to add to the box. Something us intuitive painters need to consider. Viewing the work in a different setting is a great tip too.

This is an excellent tutorial!! Note to self: a little Mr. Bean in the painting is okay...not too much Clooney...

For me, the striations of snow raises some concerns. As one striation travels behind the foreground trees, it seems the mountain was randomly laced with "snow" and it doesn't seem to sit comfortably with my eyes. Maybe breaking up that long snow diagonal from right to center of canvas is my problem. Possibly adding patches of snow that indicates a mound of snow rather than snow sliding down the side of the mountain.
The far left mountain that is covered in purplish colors, has limited suggestions of snow that is still hanging around. I assume this is not a finished painting, since the trees, rocks, mountains and some mountain snow is not reflected in the water. Some glistening highlights on the water would brighten the lake, help lead viewer's eye to your center of focus.
I hope my ramblings haven't offended you. I criticize my drawing for several days after I think I am finished. Then I see areas that I need to correct. Once I do that, like you, I place the piece where I can casually see it as I go from room to room. Those casual glances can be very helpful discovering weak points.
    Interesting video. 👍

What is going on with the white "reflection?" in the water. The ice or water flowing down the mountain to the water is on a recessed angle, yet has a huge reflection in the water, while trees on the shore, presumably standing upright, to the right are not reflected in the water at all. Very unbalanced and totally ruins it IMO.
