It also is very nice to start your day with a full charge, saving time for a supercharger stop.

I just found the use for the very “hastily” and ill fitting put together Centre console! The 12V socket allows of course for charging cables and the cables in most “German” tight closing centre consoles would chop in half the charging cables for an iPhone or other devices like an apple watch charger and this Tesla centre console allows for the cables to routed though it! Take that Mr! 😀

    • @peterharrison1977
      @peterharrison1977 2 роки тому +5

Good point! I did think Jack's comments about the centre console were nonsensical. There is a small gap down there (by design), but it's not remotely visible from any normal viewing angle. As you say it protects cables, also prevents fingers from getting crushed and stops any potential rattles or vibrations.
It's actually a good design and I find the centre storage and phone charging solution better thought out than in many other cars that are often cluttered in that area with buttons, knobs, gear selectors, handbrake etc to spill your coffee over. The days of having to vacuum crumbs out of a leather gear selector shroud are finally over, lol!

I really dont agree with what you said about the interior being too hard. Literally everything about this car is close to perfect for me. I've owned my Model Y for 6 months now and I'm blown away by the quality of the interior, the ride quality, the range of the battery, the insane speed even though I "only" went with the long-range version and not the performance version, the supercharhing network, the software, the practicality, the looks of the car in generel... everything. Much of that price difference Tesla vs everyone else, vis the build and materials, IS the supercharger network. Maintenance (making sure they very nearly ALWAYS work, and work well) and expansion of the network cost money. You pay for the network when you buy the car. It was absolutely brilliant, the decision to build the SC network, and guaranteed that Tesla wasn't at the mercy of others to (please, sir) build the charging needed to make the cars livable. You can't count on the VWs of the world getting caught and being forced to help the world, as opposed to shareholders. Ioniq 5 owner here, btw.

The reason I'm not driving a Model 3 right now is the finish and build quality. I went into a showroom intending to take a test drive and prepared to put down a deposit there and then but I didn't even get as far as the test drive after sitting in it. Nothing about it felt premium, and it would have cost me more than I paid for my house (in the 90s). "Basic" is the best I could describe the feel of the interior and misaligned panels were the least of the build quality problems. Even the parcel shelf looked like it didn't fit. I was really disappointed then and more so now after hearing the Y is the same because that's what I've been holding out for. I'm going to book a test drive anyway, and I know that everything under the outer shell is probably the best you can buy, but I don't think I'll be able to reconcile the price tag with the quality of the finish.

The step up to the Civic was like a luxury upgrade at the time, but the Model 3 felt like a step down again to a basic, entry-level car for nearly twice the price. I know technically it is an entry-level Telsa, but I didn't expect it to feel like such a basic, no-frills, kind-of-patched-together experience. Maybe it's because I've sat in similarly priced Audis and BMWs and that's just what I was expecting for that price range. I probably need to adjust my expectations.

Hi Jack, I'm 61 year old tesla fanboy from around 2013 onwards. Been an electric propulsion lover as soon as I knew it was a thing. Had been looking for an entry point that I could afford since way back then. Being a carer for my 94 year old mum, diagnosed with Alzheimer's 16 years ago but still able to ask for her favorite confectionary, Almond slices, Mr Kipling ofcourse. On a hundred pounds a week from the government - it was essential that it was cheap to buy and didn't cost much to run, my entry point ended up as an eBay 2014 Nissan Leaf Tekna (written off) 29,000 miles rear bump and shunted into a bus. Cost me 4,800 Quid, 2000 to repair 6,800 all in. Not bad for a 26,000 pound top of the range car. now has 113,000 miles on the clock, never serviced, I just repaired what was revealed at the MOT - front lower suspension knuckle, track rod end, wiper motor, and last of all PTC heater all fitted myself, some new and some used. 500 in all. (sorry, pound key not working on my Mac and probably have ADHD) (undiagnosed) So good excuse for waffling on. So one day will hopefully own a Tesla model Y performance yes I know you said the long range has enough go but feel I need the Go Go, to satisfy my need for occasional terra, excitement, I'm alive blast, pads will come in handy.
Will try to come to Amsterdam mid May for a little break and let my hair down.

Great video. I just spent my first night in my MY last week. My wife and I both slept in it in a campground on Vancouver Island. My first night was rather like yours - definitely not the best night’s sleep I’ve ever had, but the next was already better. Camp mode is great and if you plug into a powered camping site as we did (using a common camping adapter in Canada), you don’t have to worry about charge: in fact, you wake up with a full charge! (Well, it takes about 14 hours or so, but we plugged in as soon as we arrived and spent the morning making breakfast and hanging around camp). We’ve had the car exactly one year and are very happy. Quibbles are with the bluetooth-controlled door locks (annoying) and other minor things not exclusive to Tesla. One surprise (even though I’d read about it) is how much cold does affect range…we had one tense drive at -17 C in which we arrived at a Supercharger with an indicated 0 km of range…. But that is due to the slow rollout of Superchargers in British Columbia - we passed one that is all built and ready to go but is waiting for the power company to approve/power up (Cranbrook, BC). Highly recommend the Model Y if you can possibly swing the price.

In the US, the aux power sockets are 12v. However, the mugs that I have found on Amazon aren’t capable of heating cold water for tea or coffee. They are designed to keep hot drinks hot that are already hot. Therefore kind of useless because a thermal mug will keep drinks hot without power.

Thanks for sharing a fun video, indeed I really enjoy camping in our Leaf. Granted we do it the old fashioned way, e.g. bring our camping gear in the boot (and a roofbox on occasion when my wife requires puffy sleeping bags) instead of sleeping in the car. Where I live in Ontario Canada, many campgrounds have electrical campsites, allowing you to plug the car in and charge the car. Many campsites have high wattage outlets (by North American standards anyways). With a suitable adapter, I can charge my Leaf at 3-6 kW, which corresponds to a decent Level 2 charging station in North America.

I would argue they're still the dominant force out there. With other EVs in it's class they remain the most efficient, still has the most reliable charging network and still has the most range. The caveat to range and efficiency is won by Lucid but that's if we compare the Model S. But using the Model 3 and Y we have a lot of EVs that are really, really good and would be great to own if one can't get, afford or even like a Tesla. The other caveat with the charging network is we'll most likely see all EVs being able to take advantage of the reliability of their network (in the European markets).
My personal preference is the Model Y because it gives you the space and the minimal interior. It's packed with technology that's simple to use in many situations such as Dog Mode, Camp Mode and a host of other features. Additionally the infotainment is far beyond a few other competitors with a large screen. Many of the features that come standard you have to opt in for such as what we find with Polestar.
As far as your camping goes....I believe camp grounds like that have power hookup for your RV so with the Tesla travel charger you can plug in, stay on camp mode nd set your charge time and percentage and the car will maintain its state of charge.

So book into a camp site at a powered space and now worries about camp mode. What was all the references to a 9v socket earlier? My Model 3 has a statement suggesting that not every device you could pug into the 12v socket would be 'supported'. I do have an older M3 with a lead acid 12v battery (as far as I know). Oh, and reset you speed limiter down from 87mph in the UK!

@13:30 I use Autopilot on all well to marginally marked roads, but I have to stay on top of it and take over before slow zones (Autopilot doesn't recognize, for instance, a 10 or 25 mph curve on a 40 mph stretch, I suppose you'd need FSD or maybe advanced autopilot for that). I also general do most other tight turns, myself on rural roads, even if they are full speed. Autopilot does sometimes fake toward turn-only lanes and such, so anytime there is any ambiguity, one must be ready to override. Overall, though, I find use of autopilot to be of benefit on almost all roads.

EVs are composed of two sides, the Electric and the Vehicle sides. For the electric side, nobody does it better than Tesla for both software and hardware. For the Vehicle side, they still have quality issues that make Chrysler look like Rolls Royce. Raising the head of the bed is good for health. Lowers the intra-cranial BP. Helps with circulation and helps with varicose veins. The head of my bed is six inches higher then the base but it takes a few weeks to adjust to that maybe start with 3 inches for a week.

Had mine just over a month now and still in the honeymoon phase perhaps... but totally love it. Tesla vs the competition seems to parallel apple vs everything else - you either know and appreciate the differences or you don't and either is fine. It's also reassuring to see the secondhand prices of Tesla's being among the highest although recent rumours of Tesla opening up the supercharger network are of concern. Since part of the "cost premium" was to get access to the best charging network in the UK it will upset many Tesla owners if they have to queue behind non-Tesla's, especially as the success of Tesla is already resulting in some supercharger sites to become congested.

The Ioniq 5, fully specced is 10 000 less? Here it is about the same (before Tesla increased their prices at least) and their yearly service over 4 years is insanely expensive compared to the ID4 or Model Y. The Ioniq 5 democar rattled more than the Tesla, had a map that you cannot use for anything at all and had things falling apart in the interior. It also had fewer kilometers on it, so it had seen less driving. Ioniq 5 has buttons for things, but half of them only activate the screen anyways. Everything I did in the Ioniq 5 took 1-3 more button/screen presses than the ID4. Horribly designed infotainment system. More backwards and "old" than 10 year old BMW/Mercedes/Audies or even Fords.
What really sold me on the Model Y though (as it was the same price as the Ioniq 5) is that you can get one at a reasonable time (ID4 has what, 18 months deliverytime now?) and the space. The Ioniq 5, for being the exact same size as the Model Y (10 cm shorter, everything else the same) has half or less of usable space after I put in my dog cage.
Of course it also helps that it has longer range, a charging netwrork, is actually able to plan trips with navigation, can pre-heat before charging and more.
If The Model Y was 10 000 more than the Ioniq 5 though.. Not sure.

Great and fun video! But you should definitely charge your car more and use another mattress! I'm 180cm (about 5.9ft) and I sleep in the Model Y just fine.
The Dreamcase and Tesmat aren't ideal mattresses.
After weeks of research, I stumbled upon the Exped TXY Megamat. It is both foam and compressed air, giving it real comfort (some compare it to their own bed, I tend to agree) and packability. With some effort, it almost fits in the 2nd subtrunk once folded! (the shallow subtrunk, not the large subtrunk). It's really amazing. Plus, it's cut to perfectly match the shape of the model Y, so you have a larger surface area for the top half of your body.
When I used this mattress the first night, I didn't feel too comfortable because I did not inflate it enough (was too tired and didn't check well enough, it was already dark) and because I used a 1 person blanket. Next night, I inflated more and used a queen size blanket. I slept very well.
The only problem is to keep the top corners aloft as there is nothing below to maintain them. I used cardboard boxes as a temporary solution.
I'm getting a Model 3 in August 2022 and I'm buying another Exped TXY to go with it as I know it also fits (although more tightly).
Finally, for the Model Y we also got a fridge (the Astro 12V on Amazon) and a lot of lyophilised food, all of it fit in the deep subtrunk. Awesome stuff!

I need to disagree on the FSD a bit. Maybe they promised it to early, but as you said, driving is a very hard thing to do. You saying, „They have to code it“ shows, that you quite haven‘t got how the new software works. It‘s a neural net and it‘s learning from the billion miles of data, that they have. I think the speed of progress shown in the US is alarming. It‘s not quite there yet, but it seems that they are one the right track. I hope, that Tesla gets it done as soon as possible, because many people drive like maniacs, especially here in Germany. FSD and Robotaxis (maybe 10 years from now?) solve the problem. Also we would need much less cars and less parking space. I say this as a person, who never drove or had a ride in a Tesla. I only watched way to many videos about the topic 😂
