  • The BMW Group produces BMW X models in Spartanburg for the US and global markets. With record production of more than 411,000 units in 2016, Spartanburg is the largest BMW Group plant worldwide. Around 1,400 BMW X3, X4, X5, and X6 vehicles come off the assembly line every working day. Maximum production capacity is 450,000 vehicles per year.
Around 70 percent of the vehicles produced in Spartanburg are exported to more than 140 countries worldwide. According to the US Department of Commerce, the BMW Group is the largest vehicle exporter from the US in terms of monetary value. In 2016, 287,700 BMW vehicles with a total value of more than 10 billion US dollars were exported from Spartanburg: 86 percent were shipped from the Port of Charleston, with the remaining 14 percent dispatched from five other ports in the Southeastern United States.
The BMW Group has 235 local suppliers in the US. In 2016, 80 percent of the BMW Group’s purchasing volume in the NAFTA area originated in the US. The US is the company’s second-largest purchasing market, after Germany, and accounts for 5.2 billion euros.

How can you possibly misspell Spartanburg? Then, avoid identifying that it's located in South Carolina; one the fastest growing, most business and employment friendly states in America? For shame.

I was today years old when I found out that my $70,000 BMW X3 was built in USA and not Germany. And I will be tomorrow years old when I trade in my X3 for a MB or any BMW with a vin that starts with W

the X5 and X6 are both worth over $100,000 CAD after taxes and BMW has the balls to have what should be a German made car assembled in USA. Might as well go buy a GM or Dodge Durango

But most of the major parts- ie Engine and transmission- are German made, right? So car is basically assembled in USA which makes it "cheaper" to purchase.

The plant in South Carolina is no joke. It makes very high quality cars. And is the biggest exporters of cars in the US. Many BMW's world wide get their cars from the American plant. And as you can see, most of the assembly is done robotically which ensures quality every time. Engines are imported from Europe and the ZF transmission is from Belgium. In fact, from what I have heard there are more issues from the bigger sedans that are still made in Germany. That is, those are the ones to avoid. You paid allot because of the higher grade materials and assembly processes. You won't get a better BMW with a vin starting with W. And Mercedes will be a big step down whatever model you choose. Perceptions are a bitch though. Many still believe American made is worse. But the workers at the plant in north Carolina for BMW are very professional, have one of the highest moral and job satisfaction of any auto oem. Have good benefits and pay and the processes are at a very high level to ensure quality every time. This video demonstrates that in spades.

@@joshs3905 A lot of GM and Dodges are made in Canada and Mexico including the Charger/Challenger and the Silverado which are about as American as they come. That doesn’t mean they aren’t using American parts. Same goes for BMW. They are still using German parts, just assembling it in the US which also eliminates import fees when selling in the US (which is their biggest market for the X line).

@@addixon32 Yes I've heard that. As a general rule, working for the Germans in the US is a good experience. They generally provide much better benefits then their domestic counterparts. Years ago I worked for Sennheiser in Albuquerque and they paid almost 100 percent medical and I got bonuses every month. The plant in South Carolina employs around 11000 employees. And for the area these are highly sought after jobs. Because wages are normally crap for that area. BMW has allot invested in this plant and I don't see them moving out any time soon. In fact the plant is the highest exporter of cars in the US. Whereas I see the domestics moving production to Mexico at an alarming rate. And they are always at odds with their workers. I own a 2019 loaded X3 and its been a perfect car. No issues. Zero.
