    It might be good to point out there's a pretty substantial fine for cutting Burl's on public property, highly illegal here in Washington State

    Great information! Perhaps you can judge a tree by it's cover.

    thanks, but I expected you say about curl and flame, since burl is known well for wood workers and very obvious signs it has, but curly woods are harder to identify,

    How close to the ground will you cut when you fell those trees? Will you dig up the stump and use any of that wood?

    • @BGTech1

      I would dig it up

    You don't have to worry about the direction you cut it? How about birds eye? I'm new to turning and trying to figure out how to make cuts, and lots of people talk about birdseye maple and other woods, I've seen one guy sort of explain it, seems to be self explanatory--from a birds perspective, but does that mean that the side with the most surface is facing up if the tree was still growing? So you wouldn't want to cut it at an angle at all, just block it up either into equal cubes or if you're doing platters and bowls make the long cuts horizontally. Sorry for the ramble, just trying to figure this out.

    I remember at my friends house as a kid the had this big tree with what we all thought was a giant pimple on the side. Can you cut the burl off a tree with out cutting it down?

    • @BlueRhino600
      @BlueRhino600 6 років тому

      from my experience yes, its like cutting off a branch. If the tree is healthy enough it wont die but if its weak it will most likely die.

    Just got a question , I live in New Brunswick Canada on the Miramichi .and I have a few big wood lots and 1 is 357 acres, not a big piece of ground,but it's old growth hardwood ridge.and I select cut my curly , birdseye and veneers. But someone went through and knocked out a piece of bark about 6x6 inches on alot of my dollar sticks. I was told that I have to cut them now ,because it will make the wood heal like litterly like an asshole , thus making it firewood .is that true?

    What regions of the United States can you find burlwood. I'm from Louisiana and always in the woods but have never seen a tree with burl growth.

      Here in the Pacific NW, Big Leaf Maple seems to be pretty prone to have burl. Maybe one of your local university forestry departments might know something? Good luck!

      Tends to be more common in the eastern and south eastern US. Hard woods are more likely to have good burls as well, such as maple, poplar, redwood, buckeye, etc. Super common in Ohio and Kentucky
