You probably know that your Motorola Defy and SPOT X or SPOT Gen4 have an SOS button, but do you REALLY know what happens when you hit it? In this test, I'll go deep into the old-growth forest in Congaree National Park to test the SOS on the Motorola Defy. Then, we'll get a behind the scenes look into how the SOS is handled at the Overwatch x Rescue Crisis Response Center in Florida. It's a unique look into the process of handling an SOS and the people who ensure you get out safe.
Big thank you to the Overwatch x Rescue team who opened their doors to me and gave me a "peek behind the SOS curtain."

Great video! I bought the Motorola Defy because of your review and will now upgrade to the Premium SOS after watching this video.
I do a lot of solo hiking/backpacking/climbing here in Colorado and it’s been really nice having the Defy for the last couple months. Thanks for the awesome videos!
Sweet. Checked out your channel and would be good to see a new vid of Colorado soon!
Fantastic video, HikingGuy! The entire Team at Overwatch x Rescue appreciated having the opportunity to meet you and it was a pleasure to have you visit our Crisis Response Center.
Thank you again for having me - it was truly an incredible experience - and thank you for all you do to help the outdoor community.
Thanks for the interviews, very informative on who manages the rescues #motoroladefy
Very well done. I have the Defy but I ordered Premium after watching. Thank you for clarifying that!
#MOTOROLADEFY - This was the most in depth video explaining the Defy as well as where the SOS messages go and who handles the calls. Thank you! 👍💪👌🙂
Thank goodness such a technology and service exists. Thanks for the useful information. As someone who often hikes alone, I think I'll be looking into this.
Great advice. Someone tried to break into my car about 25 years ago at a trailhead parking area. Ever since that I leave a printed sign on my driver's seat that says: "Why are you looking in my car? Anyway, smile you are on camera." It makes them aware that you are aware and that you probably don't leave things of value in your car. Haven't had another incident since(touch wood) and I hike a lot.
What makes you think that the thief wouldn't double their efforts to try to steal your expensive dashcam after seeing that hint?
Appreciate all the testing and content! #motoroladefy
Thanks for the info. It’s good to know that there is a group of professionals that are on standby if you need help. Thanks
We're here. Safe travels...
Really well done! You just took UA-cam hiking videos to a whole new level. Thanks for all the work you do researching and documenting stuff for us.
Thank you! Working on making the videos better so that's great to hear
@@Hikingguyhas the winner been announced?
This is a very impressive package. I’m always on the lookout for a satellite emergency messaging/rescue system for my own hiking adventures. #motoroladefy
Was the winner ever announced?
Thanks for the review! Now I'm considering getting one of these for any emergency situation. #motoroladefy
Great video and even more important information! #motoroladefy
Overwatch sounds impressive. Based on prior defy review comments from satellite engineer, I'm concluding that the particular satellite technology has some real shortcomings as compared to iridium.. now wishing, Garmin had overwatch equivalent plan..
great review of a very economical device. would be great for me to have when I take my grandsons hiking in the Sipsey Wilderness area in Bankhead National Forest. #motoroladefy
Very unique device for hiking! Thanks for sharing. #MotorolaDefy
Well done, I absolute will readmore about the #motoroladefy
Great video! Good information on what happens after the fact. #MotorolaDefy
Thanks! Well done!
Big big thank you!!!
Hiking with the #motoroladefy would make me feel much safer.
I have an InReach Mini but would be interested in adding a #motoroladefy to the toolkit as well!
I love the price/functionality level on the Motorola Defy. It's way up on my consideration list.
#motoroladefy
Where do I get the information on the $35 SOS insurance. Do you have a contact number? Great article I really enjoyed it.
Link in description and you can opt into it from the Bullit dashboard under "manage plan"
The Overwatch program looks terrific. On the iPhone 14/15, although the SOS call is free, of course the rescue costs money. Can Overwatch pay for that, too, or do you know of any insurance-type program that pays for the rescue which Apple's SOS calls?
Overwatch x Rescue will pay
Can't wait to win this!! It's really going to help our family out in a pinch! 😈🔥😅 #motoroladefy
Fairly certain I’ll buy this soon. #motoroladefy
Thanks for the info. Would be really helpful out on the SoCal trails. #motoroladefy
Cool tech #motoroladefy, appreciate your vids hiking guy
This is great content. I think I want to pick up a defy in addition to an iPhone pro. #motoroladefy
2 thumbs up. You rock the bar.well done again very informative.
#motoroladefy
Thanks for the extensive info.
I never got my hands on personal beacons just because of the price. I go on some hardcore adventure every once a while. Other brands’ active fee and subscription are way too pricey. I think that Motorola really offers a better option now! #motoroladefy
Good informative video. #motoroladefy
Very informative #motoroladefy
Great, love to win one!!
#motoroladefy
Great video - #motoroladefy
Great information #motoroladefy
Love your content. #motoroladefy
Nice vid. #motoroladefy
Very intresting. Maybe its possible to produce a „behind the sos“ at Garmin IERCC /GEOS #motoroladefy
#motoroladefy finally some other options other than Garmin.
#motoroladefy great stuff.
You never realize you need something like this. A lot of remote national parks have zero cell phone signal.
Been wanting to get a defy for a while. I've been planning on traversing a plateau blanketed with cloud forest to one of the wettest spots in the world. I want to at least want to buy one before I go It's a lot more affordable than all the other satellite devices. #motoroladefy
Sounds cool af. Where is that?
@@overwatchxrescue The Alakai wilderness preserve on Kauai. Miles of isolated pristine Hawaiian forest. A bad place to get lost in though.
@@thomas___3471 Sounds like a beautiful place to hike for sure. But yeah, definitely don't want to get lost there!
This is an amazing service. As a single mom with a teenage daughter who love to camp, this would give me piece of mind. Thank you for sharing. 🙏🙏🙏 #motoroladefy
New subscriber just stumbled on your channel a week ago. ,I like the reviews. Thanks #Motoroladefy
#motoroladefy great video so interesting. Need to get one of these for my backcountry hunts. Thks for opportunity
Great informative video...thank you! You never know what can happen. This one is affordable too!
Ooooo I've been looking at getting an emergency communication device. #motoroladefy
#motoroladefy great video. Interesting. Looks like a good alternative to the garmin.
Every year I read about hikers getting lost and sadly the outcome is rarely good. Something like this could make a huge difference. Now that they are getting more affordable it really is something to think about. Thanks for a great video! #motoroladefy
As a lone hiker in the GSMNP, this is a purchase I have been SERIOUSLY considering, Thank you for reviewing the #MotorolaDefy I wasn't aware of the product, before your video, Thanks again
Recent camper/backpacker who is also based in LA so I've watched lots of your videos and have visited your site a lot to read about local trails! Thanks for the great content :) #motoroladefy
Thank you for this very useful video about how FocusPoint handles the Motorola Defy Satellite Link SOS service. #motoroladefy
Great video! I’ve camped and hiked in areas with low or no signal. Thankfully I’ve never been in an emergency situation but it’s good to be safe. #motoroladefy
Enjoyed this content. Used the Spot Gen3 in the past, similar form factor, but the 2way text would be a big plus. #motoroladefy
Both are great devices, and Overwatch x Rescue supports both Defy and SPOT users behind the SOS button. Device redundancy never hurts if you have one of each either.
Great video, with all the comparisons! Really helpful, thx!
#motoroladefy
I’m right under the wire. This would be awesome to have. Thanks for the give-away! #MotorolaDefy 🌿
Thank you! Love ur videos. Always watch ur videos, so informative. #motoroladefy
This would be the perfect device for me. I'm in the backcountry a handful of times a year and this looks like a great alternative to the inreach and spot messengers. #motoroladefy.
Hello! wonderful giveaway! Good luck Everyone!❤
#Motoroladefy
I would test this device and hopefully it will work and I can calm bad reviewers. Go for it #motoroladefy
Thank you for all the videos. Appreciate you and God bless! #motoroladefy
This is an awesome gadget #motoroladefy
Need to get the #motoroladefy soon. I am in remote areas in Canada on my motorbike or hiking. I got lucky with cell service on my last incident when I broke my collar bone. However, next time I may not get so lucky.
Within the last month I've just bought the Motorola Defy Satellite Link; Not as young as I once was but still hike to fairly remote sites here in the Scottish Highlands > so this device is very reassuring (I must add that I am not a risk taker). After watching this I have just subscribed to the Premium SOS . As has been noted, this certainly escalates the value of UA-cam. Thank you ...
Excellent, interesting video. Thank you! #motoroladefy
I watched the video since I know this company and I was rather impressed with their capabilities and operation in Florida. I will pass along the plan information to certain clinicians.
Appreciate the support, John.
I've been a long time user of an InReach SE+. I've used it and I loan it to both of my adult children when they need it. This Motorola Defy may be a good Christmas gift for the kids this year. Thanks for all you do Cris! #MotorolaDefy
I've been curious about this device because of the price. But a bit concerned about the coverage. Didn't see any coverage in Hawaii. #motoroladefy
It's nice to see what actually happens with the SOS button, even if someone does grab one I feel like a lot of people would be intimidated to actually press the button. This alleviates some concerns I feel. I've been recently getting back into camping with my husband and having this added sense of security would be amazing! #motoroladefy
Great to hear it and enjoy your camping!
Looking for something else to replace the expensive garmin subscription! #motoroladefy
Thanks for the video. I have been looking at other options like garmin. This is new to me so this great to see another option. #motoroladefy
Thanks for your video. Time to say goodbye to my zoleo #motoroladefy
Thanks for the information. I plan to purchase one before this winter. My local state park has no cell service in the majority of the park. #motoroladefy
#motoroladefy Love the info you put out there to help more people feel comfortable exploring the outdoors! Such an interesting product!!!
Can’t really get lost in The Netherlands, but with a #motoroladefy I would feel safe enough to explore the beautiful Swedish nature.
I'm thinking of hiking in the Eastern Sierras soon, so having this might be very useful! #motoroladefy
Wow this things is really a life saver. I’m glade this came across my feed as I am new into camping and hiking and this is a definite must have for either occasion. #motoroladefy
10:17
That's amazing for our hikes. would love to have my hands on that #motoroladefy!
I am still in between choosing is I go with garmin or if I go with #motoroladefy but his video really helps me see the advantages of motoroladefy device.
More and more I've been thinking a satellite messenger device is the responsible way to spend time in the backcountry #motoroladefy
The #motoroladefy would be great to have. I’m hoping to summit Mount Whitney and Mount Muir in less than two weeks and plan to do more 14ers in California. This would be a great piece of emergency equipment to have.
Have a safe and incredible summit, and feel free to send us pics from the adventure!
How was your summit attempt? I've done Palisade and Whitney a zillion times, they're amazing hikes! Did you climb out of the valley, or at the base? Hope you had a great climb!
Just thinking about getting a #motoroladefy because of your videos. Would be nice to win one.🙂
Looking forward to service expansion to Canada. #motoroladefy
I've used your videos to navigate a lot of socal hikes, appreciate ya! #Motoroladefy
Thanks for the sharing your experience with this. Been debating between the #motoroladefy zoleo and garmin for too long now.
Really informative video. Seems like a mistake to not have one when outdoors #motoroladefy
I’ve been obsessed with your videos for the past year can’t wait to either purchase or win a #motoroladefy
Been wanting a satellite messenger for a while now for peace of mind to my loved ones! #motoroladefy
Cool video! Nice to see what happens behind the scenes. I once had to push the emergency button on my Spot Gen-2 in NZ years ago. Nice to see it on the back end. #motoroladefy
@CarlZ993 Overwatch x Rescue is available to all SPOT customers as well.
this is perfect and much needed info. thank you!!
Thanks for the behind the scenes on emergency response. Well done! #motoroladefy
I've had Focus Point Overwatch x Rescue for awhile now. But watching their interviews, I suddenly feel a thousand times better trusting them! (But I also have an inReach. In the backcountry, one is none!) I think my Defy will now become my primary. The Overwatch folks sold me. I felt like they actually genuinely care about what they're doing.
Former SAR, high angle, but I now do the unthinkable and frequently head into the back country by myself. I'm always more than a little afraid I'll get ledged-up one of these days. It's a rather recurring nightmare. I generally carry far more weight than I should with rope and a descending rig onto a scramble, just in case. But I'd breathe a lot easier if I believed help would actually arrive when I pushed the button. (My SAR days were pre consumer satellite communicators)
I will say that in testing in the back country, primarily in the Sierras and high deserts, (some very low desert), I've never had any problems with the Defy finding the bird(s) and getting a message out and back. It regularly takes < 10 seconds each way with someone on ham radio + bullitt app side-by-side.
#motoroladefy looks very promising! Great video 8:56
I’d love to have one of these to feel safer in the outdoors exploring out here in the sawtooths! #motoroladefy
First of all, thanks for the time you put in for these videos. Been hiking in the New England area recently at age 54. Usually I'm in the white mountains of New Hampshire or way up in the Northwoods of Maine and usually solo. I was concerned that the Motorola defy lacked reliability, since I read a lot of reviews on Amazon and other places about no service. I was wondering has it gotten any better? I would love to have some kind of off the grid emergency device and not paying. I'm in a leg considering I only go about twice a month to places like these. Look forward to your reply.
For best coverage, the inReach is the clear winner. I'd say my Defy works about 90% of the time, usually resolved by moving a bit, which is not always possible when in distress.
#motoroladefy seems like a great alternative to the Inreach. Thanks for the info
Thank you for the informative video!
