You probably know that your Motorola Defy and SPOT X or SPOT Gen4 have an SOS button, but do you REALLY know what happens when you hit it? In this test, I'll go deep into the old-growth forest in Congaree National Park to test the SOS on the Motorola Defy. Then, we'll get a behind the scenes look into how the SOS is handled at the Overwatch x Rescue Crisis Response Center in Florida. It's a unique look into the process of handling an SOS and the people who ensure you get out safe.
Big thank you to the Overwatch x Rescue team who opened their doors to me and gave me a "peek behind the SOS curtain."

Great video! I bought the Motorola Defy because of your review and will now upgrade to the Premium SOS after watching this video.
I do a lot of solo hiking/backpacking/climbing here in Colorado and it’s been really nice having the Defy for the last couple months. Thanks for the awesome videos!
Sweet. Checked out your channel and would be good to see a new vid of Colorado soon!
Fantastic video, HikingGuy! The entire Team at Overwatch x Rescue appreciated having the opportunity to meet you and it was a pleasure to have you visit our Crisis Response Center.
Thank you again for having me - it was truly an incredible experience - and thank you for all you do to help the outdoor community.
As a lone hiker in the GSMNP, this is a purchase I have been SERIOUSLY considering, Thank you for reviewing the #MotorolaDefy I wasn't aware of the product, before your video, Thanks again
Recent camper/backpacker who is also based in LA so I've watched lots of your videos and have visited your site a lot to read about local trails! Thanks for the great content :) #motoroladefy
I've been a long time user of an InReach SE+. I've used it and I loan it to both of my adult children when they need it. This Motorola Defy may be a good Christmas gift for the kids this year. Thanks for all you do Cris! #MotorolaDefy
This is an amazing service. As a single mom with a teenage daughter who love to camp, this would give me piece of mind. Thank you for sharing. 🙏🙏🙏 #motoroladefy
Really well done! You just took UA-cam hiking videos to a whole new level. Thanks for all the work you do researching and documenting stuff for us.
Thank you! Working on making the videos better so that's great to hear
@@Hikingguyhas the winner been announced?
Within the last month I've just bought the Motorola Defy Satellite Link; Not as young as I once was but still hike to fairly remote sites here in the Scottish Highlands > so this device is very reassuring (I must add that I am not a risk taker). After watching this I have just subscribed to the Premium SOS . As has been noted, this certainly escalates the value of UA-cam. Thank you ...
Thanks for the interviews, very informative on who manages the rescues #motoroladefy
I really appreciate this video. I was excited to see the Motorola first announced and without your extra effort I don't know that I would want one, strictly because there is not enough information yet. Well done.#motoroladefy
#MOTOROLADEFY - This was the most in depth video explaining the Defy as well as where the SOS messages go and who handles the calls. Thank you! 👍💪👌🙂
Cool video! Nice to see what happens behind the scenes. I once had to push the emergency button on my Spot Gen-2 in NZ years ago. Nice to see it on the back end. #motoroladefy
@CarlZ993 Overwatch x Rescue is available to all SPOT customers as well.
Every year I read about hikers getting lost and sadly the outcome is rarely good. Something like this could make a huge difference. Now that they are getting more affordable it really is something to think about. Thanks for a great video! #motoroladefy
I watched the video since I know this company and I was rather impressed with their capabilities and operation in Florida. I will pass along the plan information to certain clinicians.
Appreciate the support, John.
Thanks for the video. I have been looking at other options like garmin. This is new to me so this great to see another option. #motoroladefy
Thank you for all of your videos on the local trails in Southern California! I've been looking for a more affordable satellite communicator and this looks really interesting. #motoroladefy
Thank you so much for the follow up! I've been looking into the Defy since your 1st video on it. #motoroladefy
Impressive! Thank you for going through all of that so that we all understand better what exactly happens once the button is pressed.
Appreciate all the testing and content! #motoroladefy
Awe great! Thank you for doing all the research. I’m so lucky that you are local, I have been following your hikes for a couple of years and could not be happier. #motoroladefy
Great video! I’ve camped and hiked in areas with low or no signal. Thankfully I’ve never been in an emergency situation but it’s good to be safe. #motoroladefy
Wow. I was developing a small solution to this company and I had no idea of the extension of their service. They're great guys, very organized, and polite
Me and my partner have been getting really into hiking and I have been making a list of things we need so thank you for all your videos reviewing gear it’s been incredibly helpful! #motoroladefy
Great informative video...thank you! You never know what can happen. This one is affordable too!
This is very unique and informative content. Over the years, you created tons of videos related safety issues and products. This certainly is another level. Also thanks to Overwatch x Rescue team showing you how the behind the scene operation is running. Thank you, Cris! #MotorolaDefy
Appreciate that!
Enjoyed this content. Used the Spot Gen3 in the past, similar form factor, but the 2way text would be a big plus. #motoroladefy
Both are great devices, and Overwatch x Rescue supports both Defy and SPOT users behind the SOS button. Device redundancy never hurts if you have one of each either.
@Hikingguy Thanks for this video! Great job Overwatch x Rescue Team!
Thanks for the sharing your experience with this. Been debating between the #motoroladefy zoleo and garmin for too long now.
I really like the pre-qualification questions as well as the resources that are applied. I recently had to press the button on a competitor’s device. I was able to get help but felt that a much better job could have been done as far as instructions provided to me. The overwatch service seems like it is well worth it. #motoroladefy
@Hikingguy Great Video! Well done Overwatch x Rescue Team!
this is perfect and much needed info. thank you!!
Thanks for the behind the scenes on emergency response. Well done! #motoroladefy
With my wife and I doing a lot of traveling for hiking and camping, this is on the wishlist of items. Just couldn’t decide between all the options. Thank you for the informational videos!! #motoroladefy
Thanks! Well done!
Big big thank you!!!
Thanks, I have the SPOT after hiking in the Tetons, hours from rescue and thinking, "What if?"... One of use would have a 4-5 hr hike out and another 40-45min dive to cell service... wait for SAR and then directing our taking them in. Probably turn into an overnighter... No fun!
Impressive reporting on the behind the scenes. Bravo! #motoroladefy
Love your videos so informative no hype just down to earth thank you I feel you are so helpful to get or not to get products thanks
Great advice. Someone tried to break into my car about 25 years ago at a trailhead parking area. Ever since that I leave a printed sign on my driver's seat that says: "Why are you looking in my car? Anyway, smile you are on camera." It makes them aware that you are aware and that you probably don't leave things of value in your car. Haven't had another incident since(touch wood) and I hike a lot.
What makes you think that the thief wouldn't double their efforts to try to steal your expensive dashcam after seeing that hint?
Excited for the release in 🇨🇦
Great to see Motorola step up and bring their name in partnership to this long awaited device.
#Motoroladefy
Fantastic work! 👏
It's nice to see what actually happens with the SOS button, even if someone does grab one I feel like a lot of people would be intimidated to actually press the button. This alleviates some concerns I feel. I've been recently getting back into camping with my husband and having this added sense of security would be amazing! #motoroladefy
Great to hear it and enjoy your camping!
Thank you for this very useful video about how FocusPoint handles the Motorola Defy Satellite Link SOS service. #motoroladefy
great review of a very economical device. would be great for me to have when I take my grandsons hiking in the Sipsey Wilderness area in Bankhead National Forest. #motoroladefy
Excellent video!
Thanks for the info. It’s good to know that there is a group of professionals that are on standby if you need help. Thanks
We're here. Safe travels...
You never realize you need something like this. A lot of remote national parks have zero cell phone signal.
Hell yeah! Always wanted to try these out on some off grid hikes! #motoroladefy 🙏🏻
#motoroladefy great video. Interesting. Looks like a good alternative to the garmin.
I've used your videos to navigate a lot of socal hikes, appreciate ya! #Motoroladefy
Been wanting to get a defy for a while. I've been planning on traversing a plateau blanketed with cloud forest to one of the wettest spots in the world. I want to at least want to buy one before I go It's a lot more affordable than all the other satellite devices. #motoroladefy
Sounds cool af. Where is that?
@@overwatchxrescue The Alakai wilderness preserve on Kauai. Miles of isolated pristine Hawaiian forest. A bad place to get lost in though.
@@thomas___3471 Sounds like a beautiful place to hike for sure. But yeah, definitely don't want to get lost there!
I'm starting to get into backpacking and thought about starting with #Motoroladefy. Great video!
Thank you Cris for all of your informative videos!
I think that in this day and age it is imperative to carry some sort of PLB or Satellite communicator. Depending on your budget you have several good choices. #motoroladefy
Great video, with all the comparisons! Really helpful, thx!
#motoroladefy
Thanks for the information. I plan to purchase one before this winter. My local state park has no cell service in the majority of the park. #motoroladefy
That's amazing for our hikes. would love to have my hands on that #motoroladefy!
Cool to see behind the scenes! #motoroladefy
First of all, thanks for the time you put in for these videos. Been hiking in the New England area recently at age 54. Usually I'm in the white mountains of New Hampshire or way up in the Northwoods of Maine and usually solo. I was concerned that the Motorola defy lacked reliability, since I read a lot of reviews on Amazon and other places about no service. I was wondering has it gotten any better? I would love to have some kind of off the grid emergency device and not paying. I'm in a leg considering I only go about twice a month to places like these. Look forward to your reply.
For best coverage, the inReach is the clear winner. I'd say my Defy works about 90% of the time, usually resolved by moving a bit, which is not always possible when in distress.
Appreciate all of this great in-depth content! #motoroladefy
#motoroladefy great video so interesting. Need to get one of these for my backcountry hunts. Thks for opportunity
Truly life saving information. Thank you for all your hard work. #motoroladefy
Thank you for all the videos. Appreciate you and God bless! #motoroladefy
Thanks for the review! Now I'm considering getting one of these for any emergency situation. #motoroladefy
New subscriber just stumbled on your channel a week ago. ,I like the reviews. Thanks #Motoroladefy
Thanks for all you do Chris! I need one of these #motoroladefy
Great video and even more important information! #motoroladefy
Great video!!
Thanks Cris. Very informative as always. #motoroladefy
Can’t really get lost in The Netherlands, but with a #motoroladefy I would feel safe enough to explore the beautiful Swedish nature.
I'm thinking of hiking in the Eastern Sierras soon, so having this might be very useful! #motoroladefy
Great content. Appreciate all the research you do for your channel and viewers 👍🇦🇺 #motoroladefy
I really appreciate this behind the scenes and what happens. It makes it feel less intimidating if you do think you need to push the button. I've been eyeing one of these for awhile and the Motorola with Bullitt is the first one that actually seems cost effective for weekend warriors like myself.
So did you actually get injured? How's the recovery if so?
#motoroladefy
Glad to report that HikingGuy did not get injured. He ran a mock scenario and SOS button test from a live location.
@@overwatchxrescue I thought that was the case, but it seem to play out very real. Bit I think that was the point. 😁
@@RyanSchell he had his wife fooled as well, actually haha
This is a very impressive package. I’m always on the lookout for a satellite emergency messaging/rescue system for my own hiking adventures. #motoroladefy
Was the winner ever announced?
Your reviews and insights are always useful thanks for the vids. #motoroladefy
This would be the perfect device for me. I'm in the backcountry a handful of times a year and this looks like a great alternative to the inreach and spot messengers. #motoroladefy.
Thank you! Love ur videos. Always watch ur videos, so informative. #motoroladefy
Thanks for bringing us this information to keep us safer in the outdoors. #motoroladefy
great info, thanks so much
always watch your videos! great as always #motoroladefy
Great video! Good information on what happens after the fact. #MotorolaDefy
This is a little off subject but just got an Iphone 14, and was wondering who made the case you were using in
the video on the SOS feature ? That was the video that convinced me to subscribe to your channel (very useful).
It's the leather case from Apple
@@Hikingguy Thank you for responding, I am enjoying your content
Really helpful video. Thanks for the content and breakdowns #motoroladefy
Interesting, informative, coherent; thanks for taking your time & effort to publish this video.
Yes, I normally hike alone.
Yes, I carry an ACR ResQLink PLB every time I go hiking & I carry it in a pant pocket, not buried inside my backpack. I bought it 7+ years ago because it put out a strong 5 Watt signal which to this day is as strong a signal as any PLB puts out. Yep, no texting. Yes, I go online B4 each hike & change the registration form to include the trailhead co ords of where I park. Yes, I date the info which is in the first paragraph of the registration form. My biggest concern is getting bit by a Rattlesnake. The registration form asks me to include my cell phone # so SAR can call me if I have a cell phone signal for details of my situation.
Yes, I'm a long time subscriber & "Liked" this & all your other videos.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada
Just wonder, does ACR sell replacement batteries or does the PLB need to go back to the factory to get the battery replaced?
@@qfan8852 As of 3 years ago/2020 it would have cost me $150 + shipping to have an ACR Licensed/Registered dealer replace the battery pack in my ACR PLB. Beacon Battery Replacement sold me the battery pack I needed for $39.95 which I installed myself.
they have authorized service centers where you can bring or send it - I'm sure people have done it themselves though, prob a little digging will find a video on that
Great video! Very interesting to see behind the scenes. Do you think they offer better support then Garmin services? They seem to have a good service! #motoroladefy
The #motoroladefy would be great to have. I’m hoping to summit Mount Whitney and Mount Muir in less than two weeks and plan to do more 14ers in California. This would be a great piece of emergency equipment to have.
Have a safe and incredible summit, and feel free to send us pics from the adventure!
How was your summit attempt? I've done Palisade and Whitney a zillion times, they're amazing hikes! Did you climb out of the valley, or at the base? Hope you had a great climb!
Very unique device for hiking! Thanks for sharing. #MotorolaDefy
Looks excellent. Will it work with iPhone? Also, what is battery life?
ua-cam.com/video/erNzP0OKvJo/v-deo.html
Very well done. I have the Defy but I ordered Premium after watching. Thank you for clarifying that!
Nice video on what happens behind the scenes! #motoroladefy
I've had Focus Point Overwatch x Rescue for awhile now. But watching their interviews, I suddenly feel a thousand times better trusting them! (But I also have an inReach. In the backcountry, one is none!) I think my Defy will now become my primary. The Overwatch folks sold me. I felt like they actually genuinely care about what they're doing.
Former SAR, high angle, but I now do the unthinkable and frequently head into the back country by myself. I'm always more than a little afraid I'll get ledged-up one of these days. It's a rather recurring nightmare. I generally carry far more weight than I should with rope and a descending rig onto a scramble, just in case. But I'd breathe a lot easier if I believed help would actually arrive when I pushed the button. (My SAR days were pre consumer satellite communicators)
I will say that in testing in the back country, primarily in the Sierras and high deserts, (some very low desert), I've never had any problems with the Defy finding the bird(s) and getting a message out and back. It regularly takes < 10 seconds each way with someone on ham radio + bullitt app side-by-side.
#motoroladefy Love the info you put out there to help more people feel comfortable exploring the outdoors! Such an interesting product!!!
Overwatch sounds impressive. Based on prior defy review comments from satellite engineer, I'm concluding that the particular satellite technology has some real shortcomings as compared to iridium.. now wishing, Garmin had overwatch equivalent plan..
I’ve been obsessed with your videos for the past year can’t wait to either purchase or win a #motoroladefy
Love all the videos and education! #motoroladefy
Well done, I absolute will readmore about the #motoroladefy
Looks like a nice handy way to be in contact without steep prices. #motoroladefy
Very well done!
Thank goodness such a technology and service exists. Thanks for the useful information. As someone who often hikes alone, I think I'll be looking into this.
Thank you for all you do and great videos!
#Motoroladefy
Thanks for the info. Would be really helpful out on the SoCal trails. #motoroladefy
