I had the good fortune to travel in the same first class train compartment with Nikhil ji and Swapan Choudhary, from Jaipur to Delhi in circa 79. I was a youngish foriegner already in love with classical Indian music and they were both my musical heroes, as well as having just watched them perform live in Jaipur. So I felt blessed when they entered the same train compartment. We got on well and chatted the whole way to Delhi where I alighted with Nikhil's contact details in hand. Shortly after I met at his residence in Calcutta when Anindo was there. Later I met up in London and saw a few wonderful intimate concerts there, all arranged by his brother in law who lived there.
What a charming gentleman he was. The archetypal, unusuming Bengali intellectual artist. His music is eternal, unique and divine on every level, and so was he.

I am listening Nikhil Banerjee play on Sitar for last more than 40 years. From the very start when he became famous. I am also a sitar player. I wonder how he produces such a sweet, bold and perfect tune on each stroke, whether it is in slow or fast mode. We are fortunate to have such a God Gifted genius to take us to sublimity.

Nikhilda has created a vast span of Raga Rageshri. He has opened up for us tremendous treasure or shower of melodious phrases and lines in the raga one after another, each phrase beatifying the previous phrase or line and paving sonorous background for the next phrase or melodic line. This goes on intensifying listerner eagerness. He is totally drowned in the abstract mood of the raga. As if he has not kept anything for other artists to play or perform.
Millions of thanks for loading the magnificent Raga.

Very well put, Mr. Bakare. With every raga he does the same: leaves very little for others to do. Reminds me of what Schubert said after listening for the first time to Beethoven's C Sharp minor String Quartet: after this what is left to compose?

Every Time I listen to Nikhilda it appears I am listening for the first time. What a devotion and what a perfection. He has done everything possible throughout his life to make it a bit better through his devotion and hard work. It is really difficult or rather impossible to find a soul like this. Really god gifted. Ravi Shankar once praised his devotion, perfection and hard work. Perhaps that said everything about him.

Sorry Mr Chaudhuri, IMHO Ravi Shankar's praise matters little. Nikhil Banerjee in his 55 years on this planet took sitar playing to heights beyond that reached by anyone else, which includes Ravi Shankar in his 90+ years. To display this simple fact, all one has to do is play them side by side.

It's not really the best comparison because Banerjee started learning sitar at the age of 5 while Shankar did not begin his learning until he was 18. There's a lot to be said about the compounding effect of the learning curve especially when you start learning at such a young age. That aside, I still agree with you that Banerjee reached a greater height in his shorter career than Shankar did.

To compare two Sitar greats of Maihar Gharana, Pandit Ravi Shankar and Pandit Nikhil Banerjee would be meaningless, even foolish to even try !! While Ravishankar ji was incomparable in the aspects of Purity of Raaga, Laya, Tala and totality of presentation, Nikhil Babu is incomparable as far as his tone and emotional approach to Classical music are concerned. Their approaches were different and it depends on the individual which approach appeals to him or her, more..

I've been there myself. He has touched my 'soul,' indeed. God Almighty, has brought him into both of our lives for a good purpose---to help those who suffer like ourselves by guiding one to a conscious-contact with the 'divine' will of God Almighty through Meditative harmonies, that transcends one's consciousness into a Religious Experience; a life changing moment that is God-given. God bless you, Ojman.

An exquisite Rageshree - a heartbreaking alaap marred only slightly by the sudden entry of the tabla at 33min - though the entry is neatly spliced in. Many thanks for posting!
