Many families panic when they learn that a child is depressed, by the fact alone. Some children just can't admit that to people.
Friends could be hurt to hear it, or hurt by the absence of that depressed person as well. For all you know, the child could be depressed because they're in an abusive home, etc.
You never know the story until you ask. Assumptions aren't the answer, even if it's in good intention.

My grandpa was in the hospital for almost six months with pancreatitis and was doing well, then one day got sick and was throwing up fecal matter because the bag he pooped into malfunctioned. A day before that my mom asked me to FaceTime him and I just decided not to. The next he passed away. This only happened 4 days ago and I am really disappointed in myself for simply not calling and saying I love him. Because now I can’t.
You know.. I got that feeling the first time I was playing VR that everyone on there has problems. You dont want to flee in another reality when youre doing fine in the one you were born I guess.
Still seeing how many people you can find that are not doing well is aweful.
