I have a Cricut Cake and I really like it, I just use premade fondant, roll it out and cut. It can be temperamental, but with a bit of patience it works. What's cool about fondant is, that if your cut is messed up, you can wad it up, reroll and try again. You can't do that with paper.
Working with the cricut has been one of the most TRYING things out of everything that I do regarding cake. I have gone through EVERYTHING that you just talked about. I haven't given up completely on gumpaste/fondant, but what we're working with mostly now on the cricut is edible sheets (the ones for edible images) works amazingly! I found freezing a perfectly even flat layer of 100% gum paste to be the least problematic, but it still was challenging! I wish I had an answer for you!!
I bought my cricut cake machine a few months ago, but I've been procrastinating on using it, because it seems so intimidating, although I've made fondant cakes and decorated them manually in the past. Your tutorial is very informative and it has given me motivation to start using it. Thanks!
So great!!! It can definitely be frustrating, but can do fabulous things if you persevere. Thickness, temp of the gumpaste/fondant and depth of the blade all can cause "issues". Good luck!
@KKKlarky We’ve found that a mixture of 50/50 gum paste/fondant or just gum paste alone works best. If you want to use only fondant, try the Wilton brand for best results. Yes, thin works better for cutting, but the shapes are very fragile to work with, which is why we do ours thicker. Cuts in the mat are normal and the machine is actually meant to operate by cutting through the material and into the mat. You should be able to find some cheap replacement mats on ebay or amazon.
yes and yes. we order our fondant online, but it is available at any cake supply store. we have a video for how to make fondant, on our viewer request list...so hopefully we get to it soon
It really depends … once you get it figured out, it can be a real time saver for production work. But, most of what the Cricut does, you can do by hand or with cheap fondant molds. I would say that if you’re making a lot of cakes and need a production machine, buy it … but if you only make the occasional cake, you’ll probably not use it enough to justify the cost.
@Dee0216 Hi! Thanks for watching and for you comment. Sure, I can do a video on that for you! In case you're working with the cricut cake before we get to it, all I do is gently use the flat tool to loosen the cut out from the board, and then let it dry for a couple of minutes, put the gum glue or water on the back, THEN move it onto the cake. The thicker the fondant/gum paste, the less it stretches. Good luck!
Yes, we've done that and it works well. We're currently in a contest...If you have time VOTE for us to win UA-cam’s OnTheRise program. Go to our main page and watch the VOTE video for details!
Yes ours are too...we bought an extra mat as soon as it happened because we thought we had ruined the mat, but it has been fine. We haven't even used the new one!
Cutting gum paste and edible image sheets has proven to be most successful on the cricut in my opinion. It is very temperamental though! Just a warning!
Buenas me puedes ayudar me ofrecieron una maquina asi, y m dicen q corta también Cartulina y goma Eva vinil quisiera saber si es verdad, gracias por su ayuda
Hi Jen! I´m thinking to buy one of this babes, but after read all the coments it looks like is a headache to deal with it, what do you think? objectively? It worth it or should I better save the money in my piggy bank? Please tell me, I can´t decide.
Also I was told that if you use the wilton sugar sheets to use a regular cricut sticky mat and leave the backing on the sugar sheet. place it on the regular mat and it won't move. Then cut with the cricut cake and lift off. Since it doesn't touch the mat you don't have to worry about it being food grade. Have you tried this?
Ok Jen Received my machine & have lots of questions?? Rather than asking here, so little characters allowed, is there a spot on your blog/cake site to send quesions? Said I would pick r brains. Are you using fondant, f/gmpaste mix, 100% gmpaste? Yours looks thick, cricut says roll, thin, thin. I did fiddle a bit yesterday, froze my f/d worked Ok. Is it normal to have "marks" left on r mat after many cuts? Thanks Jen
My mom is thinking of buying one of these but wants to know if she can design her own images on a computer and upload them to the cricut? I've searched the topic but have gotten mixed answers. Thank you!
Eddie Lira Yes, you can use software to layout/arrange your own designs, and have them print, but I don't know if there is software that lets you make your own designs.
I bought the cricut cake machine a year ago & still haven't used it, guess I just feel a little intimidated by it. Although I tried cutting fondant with my scrapbooking cricut just for fun & it worked too, but a lot of cleaning : ) Do you recommend the fondant sheets or just fondant?
Hi, I actually own a circuit but when you're working with fondant for cakes is it just the cartage or do they sell circuit machines just for cakes, I want to try this but hoping that I don't have to purchase another machine
You can actually use your own machine to do this. There is no need to buy this one unless you want it just for cakes. All you need is the cake blade to use on your cricut machine
I have been told that the frosting sheets that are used as cookie toppers taste like cardboard. Was wondering what other alternative sheet I could use for my printed images?
I learned with another lady that when you pass a roller on the fondant after putting it on the mat, it will prevent the fondant to move during the cutting because it will help it to stick to mat better.
This may be a crazy question, but I have one of these machines, but have never used it for cakes. Can this machine be used for cutting paper? Maybe if I had a different blade. I have an original Cricut machine for paper, (it looks just like this one, but it is white) but was thinking maybe I would give this one to my daughter if she could use it for paper.
Alguien sabe si puede usar esta máquina para cortar otros materiales o solo fondan?????? Some one now if i can use this machine for cut other materials o only fondant? ??
I notice that some of the designs are now embossed on my mat...is that normal?? i tried adjusting the pressure but it does the same thing....thanks Enza
When I turn on my cricut cake, it stays on the "Cricut v2.31 Copyright" screen -- is there something special I have to hit (a button?) for it to prompt me to "Slide Mat" ?? Also mine makes a loud noise when I turn it on - it does that "whirring noise" like it's starting up and then the little cutter block thing makes a loud noise - is that normal??
I ended up selling mine - despite doing it all right I still found it a lot faster to hand cut everything with a blade rather than deal with the thousands of variables with this machine, it was just way to unreliable.
I have 2 cricut cake and I am sooo frustrated with it. I am not able to get it to cut any images well. I have tried different fondants and gumpaste and I am very disappointed with the results. I you or anyone you know would like to purchase them (one has never been open and other has only been used a few times. I am eager to sell them at a VERY GOOD price.
Dios los bendiga disculpen yo tengo una nueva solo la abrí para calarla pero mi abuja no corta le compre otra pero me paso lo mismo alguien de aqu me puede decir como vajar mas la abuja xq no llega a cortar esta muy arriba
that is so not worth it if you have to sit, and babysit it so it doesn't mess up. also I wish you would of showed that happy birthday when you peeled it off the matte cause it looked like it murdered it, and it was unusable. It didn't look at all like the finished product. Also if you have to spend hours, and hours rolling out the fondant only to have the blade catch, and ruin your design it is in no way worth the hundreds of dollars this thing costs.
Hi, I just win a gorgeous polish that, but for me being a white elephant (in this case red, lol). I do not know how to use the fondant here in Brazil dizeram not serve, and not have anyone who can explain to me, or I'll stop here racking my brain. I also see something that is passed to the base by folder america, what is it? I like your video.
is there a better one on the market yet. Looks unstable and very fiddly. AND, if it doesn't accommodate one's own designs - what's the point? Sorry have to ask these things. This machine does not look very happy.
Hello, I wanted to know if anyone tried to emboss on the cake cricut using fondant or Gum Paste? If yes do u have a video I can check out or helpful tips I can use??

Where can I buy food shorter from
And how thick or thin do you roll your paste

Thanks ... try the new frosting sheets they now have out, they're easier to work with. We'll have a video out on these soon.
this has been the most HELPFUL tutorial i have seen. thank you
@Dee0216 Hi! Thanks for watching and for you comment. Sure, I can do a video on that for you! thanks for posting this! I've had my machine for over a year - still in the box! Now I feel like I can do it...
Yes, we've done that and it works well. We're currently in a contest...If you have time VOTE for us to win UA-cam’s OnTheRise program. Go to our main page and watch the VOTE video for details!
I wonder if you freeze the fondant sheet if that would make it easier to cut and it wouldn’t stick, you’d get a cleaner cut?
Yes ours are too...we bought an extra mat as soon as it happened because we thought we had ruined the mat, but it has been fine. We haven't even used the new one!
Cutting gum paste and edible image sheets has proven to be most successful on the cricut in my opinion. It is very temperamental though! Just a warning!
I've heard another alternative if you use a softer fondant is to chill it in the freezer for a short while.
@pastryqueen9 we use Satin Ice and Wilton, and they both work well.
Buenas me puedes ayudar me ofrecieron una maquina asi, y m dicen q corta también Cartulina y goma Eva vinil quisiera saber si es verdad, gracias por su ayuda
Hi Jen...thanks for the tutorial. What brand of gumpaste do you find works best with the cricut cake?
You are FANTASTIC!!! Thank you for this GREAT tutorial!!!!
Annie Campos You're welcome! Thanks for watching...I'm glad it is helpful for you.
Hi Jen! I´m thinking to buy one of this babes, but after read all the coments it looks like is a headache to deal with it, what do you think? objectively? It worth it or should I better save the money in my piggy bank? Please tell me, I can´t decide.
Does this cut custom vector images? Or only images from cartridges? Thank you in advance.

this machine was around $300 CDN.
Ok Jen

Is the Cricut machine the regular craft one just using a cake cartride and blade or is it a whole other machine?
Barbara Anderson It's a whole other machine...but you can use regular Cricut cartridges in it.
Its a whole other machine and it has alot of its parts covered so food doesnt get trapped inside.
Can you only cut images from a cartridge, or is it possible to cut other images also?
I totally understand!
thank you bought one about 10 yrs ago im bearly gonna use it i was thinking of selling it but i need to practice im nervous but here gos nothing
Can you use the Circut Cake for cutting decals for t-shirts?
i was wondering. does it print out edible pictures to put on the cakes?
My mom is thinking of buying one of these but wants to know if she can design her own images on a computer and upload them to the cricut?
I've searched the topic but have gotten mixed answers.
Thank you!

Will the circuit cake cut paper and fabric
a super thin layer on the needle is somewhat helpful..sometimes...sometimes it doesn't help at all!
Would this work better if using frosting sheets instead of rolling out the fondant?
Hi, I actually own a circuit but when you're working with fondant for cakes is it just the cartage or do they sell circuit machines just for cakes, I want to try this but hoping that I don't have to purchase another machine

Do u know how to make your own fondant or where i can get some??
I have been told that the frosting sheets that are used as cookie toppers taste like cardboard. Was wondering what other alternative sheet I could use for my printed images?
Hi would Mexican paste work better? Thanks

Can I use it for normal paper also ??
Is it possible to use a Cricut Cake machine to cut paper as well? or do you need two different machines, one for paper and one for cakes?
Lynn Finger same question
Yes u can use a paper blade
I learned with another lady that when you pass a roller on the fondant after putting it on the mat, it will prevent the fondant to move during the cutting because it will help it to stick to mat better.

I've never heard of it, but it sounds interesting!

I think if you get the right blade you can. You should try it with a cutting blade

Forgot to mention it's a cute cake and thanks for the tutorial
Is this strictly made with fondant or can ease paper to cut other things with it
What fondant do we need to use
Very cute cake..
do you have a tutorial on how to make this cake?
Hi linda how much for your machines?
can you load other designs after you design on software like illustrator or photoshop via bluetooth or usb?
so a regular cricut is not the same as a cricut cake
LaCrayshal Dalton No a cricut cake can do non food items but the other cricuts have to be modified to do food
That's actually not true I was told you can change the blade for a paper cutter and it can do both that what I was told
You have to buy a different blade its black for deeper cuts
i love it thanks
Can I install new cutting models ???
Can you reuse cartridges
Very impressive thanks.
Only is for cutting not for color Design?
Ola vc ja vendeu? quanto vc quer na maquina?
Wish you would have showed how you actually remove this stuff from the mat.
There is no trick...it's not sticky, it's just like paper.
I ended up selling mine - despite doing it all right I still found it a lot faster to hand cut everything with a blade rather than deal with the thousands of variables with this machine, it was just way to unreliable.
ola gostaria de compra la ja vendeu ou sabe como faço para comprar
Hi, can this machine cut a Barbie logo?

You are great
It looks like a lot of hard work. I can't help thinking that you could do a better job with an exacto knife.
No, this is a Cricut Cake.
@KKKlarky Good luck! And I'll be waiting for your cries for help ;)
I like it
An der Maschine fehlt ein Niederhalter. Besteht Nachbesserungsbedarf. Werde mich aber weiter einlesen.
is there a better one on the market yet. Looks unstable and very fiddly. AND, if it doesn't accommodate one's own designs - what's the point? Sorry have to ask these things. This machine does not look very happy.
I was thinking the same thing. It doesn't seem to work well
Hello,
I wanted to know if anyone tried to emboss on the cake cricut using fondant or Gum Paste? If yes do u have a video I can check out or helpful tips I can use??
I thought this machine was used for stencils. fondant can be cut with cutters by hand. was brought to wrong video, I guess
Yessssirrrrrrrrr
Hello Gemma, sorry but they both sold very quickly.
