  • Ever since I saw ‪@StavrosGakos‬ use one of these machines I knew I had to have one. Luckily, it wasn't long until I found a cheap one on a local classifieds site.
    I wanted to make a restoration video but in the process I realised that this thing was in amazing shape. Some rust removal and new springs for the chuck and it was good to go. Given the age of the machine, I think this is quite remarkable. It does seem to have all the orignal parts and paint on it. It is hard to find information on them but I saw a picture of an Ixion catalouge from the 1930ies. So I guess it is from that period.
    Since I ended up basically just cleaning it I didn't really think it was worth making a big fuzz about it. But many people have asked specifically about this machine so here it finally is!
    I'm not‪@mymechanics‬or ‪@HandToolRescue‬ so it's not a perfect-like-new type of restoration. but I ended up with a tool that is beautiful and, most importantly, usable. This thing is amazing!
    I hope you enjoy the video!

    I've searched dozens of times on UA-cam for great hand tools like this, for their smooth, quiet operation. And Almost nothing ever shows up because Google sucks at search (yeah, the irony burns). This video is pure gold.

    Jetzt schon dreimal das Video angesehen - werde die Funktion dieser genialen Maschine nie richtig verstehen. Sind die beiden Kurbelansätze für verschiedene Übersetzungen / Drehzahlen?

    Watch the video for the third time - I ´ll never understand how this drillpress really works. Can you change the crank for different gears?

      Yes, it's not entirely clear to me what is happening inside the spindle either. I could not find any drawings or anything. But since it's working so well, I didn't dare to take it apart and risk breaking something.
      The two crank positions are for different speeds, yes.

    They are brilliant for tapping holes too. the only slight downside is it tends to lift the work piece when you back out.

    Nice video! I also saw this machine in one of StavrosGakos videos and also in your video. I´ve been looking for one of these for 1 - 2 years perhaps.. Today I found one in Ebay and bought it. Still have to pick it up, but it seems in a great state according to the pictures... It´s from Metabo though and I agree; its absolut hard to find any information about his crank drill presses.. I´m very curious, how this one will work out :-) greetings, ruben

    I am not sure I understand, is vertical movement directly proportional to number of turns, or it can go slower or faster vertically? I surely did not expect it to drill the 10mm steel hole.!

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  8 місяців тому +3

      Hey, I also didn’t take it apart because it works so well and I was afraid I wouldn‘t get the mechanism back together again properly :) So I don’t entirely understand how it is done internally.
      As long as there is no resistance, the turning moves the spindle downwards as you say. When the drill meets the work piece, the spindle somehow disengages from the forward motion and lifts up the cast iron weight at the top. The spindle is then turning and the downward pressure is applied by the weight. The knob on the side works as a break and controls the amount of forward motion when the drill is engaged. It‘s a very smart design and it works really well and more or less effortlessly even with thick pieces of steel.

    Great tutorial and a big help thanks. What length are the drill chuck springs ?

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  Рік тому +2

      Thanks! I’m not sure anymore. If you have one yourself, I think it is best to open it up and buy springs as similar as possible to the original ones. I couldn’t find any that were quite as stiff as the old ones.

    An amazing drill, you're luky. Ok, a motor need less physical force but this one is autonomous, no problem with "too much power" on some delicate things. Fun ! Just a depth stop is missing to be perfect :p

      @@imadethischannel Thanks! Do you remember the size?

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  Рік тому +1

      They were 4mm by 22mm with a wire thickness of 0.5mm. If I had to do it again, I would try to get a slightly thicker wire so that they are stiffer. It works ok with those, though.

    hello, i have the same. but the disc you clean (at minute 10.30) is completely stuck and does not move.
    like the bolt you see above at minute 10.18/10.20
    what is the disassembly sequence? What do you suggest?
    also the grease cap (which you can see at 0.40 seconds), mine is a system stauffer 2, it was screwed in so much that it covered the nut (I can't unscrew it manually....)
    I found the original cap and the part that screws on on eBay. but the cost is very high with shipping.
    the cap you use (3) can be found on the market...
    Can you provide me with the model?
    thank you

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  8 місяців тому +1

      Hey, thanks for your interest in my video and congratulations for getting your own machine. The metal disk on top sits on an conical shaft. If it doesn‘t spin then the shaft must somehow be stuck. Unfortunately I cannot tell you the exact part number of the grease cup. There is another video where someone takes the machine further apart. Maybe this helps: m.ua-cam.com/video/bLQAAz1Pvp8/v-deo.html&pp=ygUeTWFudWFsIGRyaWxsIHByZXNzIHJlc3RvcmF0aW9u
      I hope you get it to work again!
