Create contours and DEM using Google Earth and QGIS 2.10

- This video demonstrates, step by step, how to create contour lines and DEM ( Digital Elevation Model) using free tools: Google Earth, TCX Converter and QGIS 2.10.
You know that QGIS can generate DEM and contours from a points cloud which contains altitude information.
So, we used the Path tool in Google Earth to create the points cloud and we exported them to a KML file.
Then, we used TCX Converter to get altitude data of the points (internet connection needed) and export them to a CSV file.
Finally, we imported the CSV in QGIS 2.10 and we used SAGA tools to generate a DEM and contour lines.

Did you ever address the issue mentioned by Ata et al. below? No altitude values appear in TCX converter screen, just "ml>". A bit frustrating!
hi thanks for the tutorial. But I have a problem with the tcx converter. At the ALT level, instead of having the different altitudes, I rather have '' OCTYPE HT ... '' which is displayed. please, how do I deal with this problem?

tcx converter didnt update altitude. in the altitude column says OCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//IETF//DTD HTML 2,0//EN">

Very Good Tutorial. However I tried to use the TCX converter over coast line and the topography is limited to 0 when the path is on the sea... Is there a way to get the full elevation data offshore and onshore???
I can't do "DEM" correctly because I can't put Grid on .tIf but only on .sdat

hello at 8:02, you save DEM.tif, i'm using the same version of QGIS2.10.1 but no .tif option, just .sdat file option? what can i do?
Having an Issue to import the file as text layer. QDUS says: "No data found in the file." I followed all steps but the QDIS sorts all data of the CVS (Lat,Lang,ALT + all numbers from left to right. It seems it does not realize that Lat, Land and ALT are the headlines for the columns?! Anyone an idea?

I run into this problem and I was able solve it this way - I opened page www.gpsvisualizer.com/elevation ...there I browse for my .kml file and added and converted elevetion there... I saved output as .gpx file... Then I loaded this .gpx file in TCX Converter instead that .kml... now do NOT add altitude in TCX Converter, but only export your file in .csv format... And then you can continue in this video manual with it :-)
does anyone know why my altitude is showing different from what appears in tcx converter? it should be within 700-1000, but when in qgis it ranges only from 100-600..

Hey, try going to the website GPS Visualizer and click on look up elevations, then you convert the kml to gpx before using the TCX.

i think the elevation accuracy between 30m to 90m, it's just a free data, and you can download DEM file directly USGS with accuracy 30m as free.

Tried using qgis 3.0.1. When i tried using natural neighbour, an error occured saying the layers were not correctly generated. The solution from the forum doesn't seem to work. Anyone? An absolute newbie here.

This algorithm requires SAGA to be run.
Unfortunately, it seems that SAGA is not installed in your system, or it is not correctly configured to be used from QGIS

I have downloaded TCX Converter from the official site. Although I push "update altitude", altitude values can't be displayed on table. Only "ml>" is written on altitude(ALT) field instead of integer values. Why does it happen?

I have however managed to find a 5m square DEM of the area in interested in but what I need is I'm trying to export it out of QGIS as a 3d object. Either .obj or .fbx would be great, for using in 3d CAD software, but I've not identified how to export just yet.. Any pointers on how to best go about that?

Got the same problem, natural neighbour was there half a year ago, now its gone... cant download it somewhere else... the newest Gis version doesnt have it either

You might find it under Raster creation tools tab. I'm also using qgis 2.16.0.

Why would someone draw like Picasso over google earth canvas when you can download free DEM elevation data for every area in the world ?
+Nesh P - This method can be useful for multiple things such as combining open source elevation data with .gpx tracks, or creating your own DEM from your gps device etc. I can see a way to crowdsource elevation data using cellphones, garmins and other devices for areas where LIDAR is not available, and combining it with the elevation from these available sources and making a pretty dang good makeshift DEM. It's really the methods that are useful to me, not necessarily the quality of the data. I can worry about that now I know another technique for joining this stuff together.

in fact we don't know where TCX Converter got heights, but the accuracy is good.
