I think Grutes needs his space and is lower energy and she hasn't yet learned to respect others dogs boundaries, but with a strong hand from you and firm boundaries that should be fine. I noticed during their introduction that Grutes made it known that he wanted space and she overstepped his limits by keep coming at him with high energy. Thats the moment where you can vorrect her and make sure Grutes gets his needs met. When his needs are being met he will have less resentment/annoyment toward the new dog as well. Also... its important that your first dog feels safe and respected in his home. Please note that when a dog stands up onto or hangs over another dog, this is a sign of dominance. Grutes growls in order to assert his boundarie. If she doesn't listen to his growls or keeps on following when he is trying to avoid her then biting incidents are to follow because thats the only thing he can do to stand up for himself. To avoid that its very important to be very clear with her when she needs to calm down and avoid hyping her up while she is interacting with him (high voices, clapping etc) The goal is to bring her to a place of calm where she is able to pick up Grutes bodylanguage and she learns when enough is enough. That means, stepping in and make her aware. And yes, the nipping is bad and needs to be adressed. Now its a dog, but another time its a child and it can have great consequences for your dog. Please dont make excuses for her bad behaviour. Instead see how you can guide her into better behaviour. Its also important because if you dont step in it will affect the trustbond you have with Grutes and you also have to put yourself in his shoes. A new dog coming in his house trying to dominate and nip at him and his long trusted friend allows it to happen... not cool. Anyway, lots of free educationvideos on youtube to help you guys out.
