    This is one of my favourite Russian salads. The success of this recipe is in the herring, if it is fresh, slightly salted your salad will be unforgettable. This recipe for Russian Herring under Fur Coat Salad, known as shuba or seledka pod shuboĭ (cеледка под шубой), is a traditional Russian and Latvian layered salad made of finely chopped pickled herring, eggs, beets, carrots, potatoes and some type of dressing, either mayonnaise or a sour cream base. This recipe takes about 30 min to make it and it serves 6-8 people. It is a must for every Russian holiday. This salad requires some time and agility to assemble it, also it needs at least 6 hours for layers to soak after it is assembled. So make sure you have enough time before you plan to serve it.

    Есть важный момен. Этот салат должен постоять перед подачей на стол ночь в холодильнике. Но особенно он вкусен после новогодней ночи ближе к полудню 😊

    I had someone bring this to a pot luck dinner and nobody could figure out what it was.....i thing the herring freaked them out. I eat herring cause my Baba came from the Ukraine as a kid so I learned to eat it from her.....yours looks very yummy. Its funny cause that white mold you are using for your salad I bought the same one in Poundland when we visited the UK this summer....I like to make cookies with the different sizes it came with....thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas!!!

      come on, what's wrong with pickled herring? it's much more natural than the herring in sweet marinade, beans in sugar sauce or ham with honey

    If you're making this, make sure not to oversalt it or use too much herring...
    That and use a special type of mayo called Provansal. You can find it at most Russian grocery stores and it's perfect for this dish. Make sure you get the 67% fat type.
    Thank you for the recipe though :)

    Hi Alla, here in my country, I find Herring fish frozen. What's the ideal cooking technique for this recipe? I think, the better should be salted herring waited for about a month but can I make it boiled or steamed? I'm a bit confused.

    Fur coat and Olivier are the most famous Russian "hearty" salads. These are winter salads. These are salads either with vodka, or when you have a long winter journey .. After eating this, you must have the strength to ride a horse for 50 kilometers .. And not freeze ...

  • @derkov
    @derkov 3 роки тому +1

    A long time ago, the Russians did it only for the New Year, Christmas and other important events ... Now you can eat it every day .. It's a pity .. The magic of this salad is gone .. (but I am still ready to sell my soul for it .. :)

      Это ужасно.
      Здесь подходит только майонез, и ещё важно , чтобы салат постоял 6 часов минимум перед употреблением.
      Майонез должен быть особым не кислым где много уксуса.
      Он называется правонсаль
