    Sweet video.
    I personally like to mix into a compressor (just touching the gain reduction) then into a limiter so (like you said) I can hear how the processing in the mix will be effected. I actually mix into 2 limiters/maximizers doing each about 1-2dB gain reduction so not one limiter is doing all the ground work. My personal favourite limiters/maximizers are Waves L2, Sonnox Oxford Limiter and Izotope Ozone Maximizer.
    That being said, I was told and taught you should not rely on mastering get your song loud, mastering will help. I was told to get a loud song (perceived loudness) it starts with sound selection, then the mix process. Mix process examples to achieve perceived loudness: parallel compression, limiting, saturation, distortion, etc.

    Ive been mixing for many years now, there is no "easy way", its a technical science that requires a skillset that comes after years of practice. Headroom is the most important factor in mixing to achieve a loud mix. Things like cutting unwanted low end(below 30-40hz) to create more headroom in the frequencies that you can actually hear. Just throwing a limiter onto a mix with too much inaudible low end will not have a good result as the headroom is taken up by inaudible frequencies. The most important part of mixing is having ears that know what they are listening for. Nothing can replace that. One last point, make sure the mix never peaks before entering the limiter, and also try to have a mix that reaches -6db before you send it to master. All said and done...practice, practice, practice. It takes time and concentration.

      the whole point of this video is to have commercial ready releases, why would u suggest to leave headroom for a mastering engineer when we want loudness? the goal is to perform a master on the mix bus to release music right away. not everybody got time or money to be payin for that service. we rather do it ourselves.

But I can hear the limiter working hard, and dont like that. I have worked with different digital compressors, while mixing, and in my mastering chain too. But no luck.

      Jay eskar masters by doing the following:
      He has an extremely loud mix that actually goes in the red. Then he does some eq and stereo shit and then puts a sausage fattener to actually lower the loud mix to 0db. For edm this sounds astonishingly good. For some reason he avoids distortion that normally happens when you push a mix with headroom. The mix for sure before mastering sounds kinda funny but he compensates and by the time he applies the sausage fattener the track magically increases in intensity, it's kept up to 0db and the dynamics are great. It makes your eyes bleed but I tried it myself. So quick to pull off, makes all your tracks sound equally loud and dynamic and just works. Even though the logic is bonkers

    Hey, as I was just checkig your vids daily, this came up, and I can say that I just won an argument with my colleague producer from a band. I used to say it is more natural to mix with a limiter on a master bus 'cause you are going to use it in a master chain anyway. His argument was on a more conservative side, so we would have to fix levels of kicks and snares almost every track as we were mastering, just because of those reasons you just mentioned. Thank you for sharing it, I was asking myselif if my intuition was deluding me or what haha. All the best man!

  • @ivanthedictatormusic
    @ivanthedictatormusic 6 років тому +12

    Hi. I love this video, and I want to tell you something. I am writing a song, and my mix sounds decent. I understand clearly that if my levels are peaking in the red zone, which is in Logic Pro X level meter, that means that the master bus might be clipping and distortion. But I am strictly aware that clipping isn’t awesome and could ruin my mix.
    And, at the same knowledge, limiters are supposed to used at the end of the mixing phase, or the beginning of the mastering phase to give enough headroom for listening before turning the mix louder without clipping. Otherwise, the sounds could feel squashed if I used it during mixing. And that’s not good either.
    So, I 4 questions for you.
    (1) The master fader, and the master bus aren’t supposed to be a adjusted and should be kept at 0db. Is that true?
    (2) My goal is to reach the green zone, and I want to mix to sound nice and loud as quickly as possible. However, there are obstacles in my way, because I don’t want to risk the sounds to sound too quiet, and having the master bus to experience some clipping. What are the best possible ways to
    have a good headroom, and what does that mean?
    (3) By having enough headroom, does it mean that I can use the limiter to make appropriate settings for the whole mix?
    (4) If I don’t know or know a little about mastering, what should I do to make the mix loud enough or have enough headroom to be professionally mastered by an engineer?
    Thanks in advance!
    Peace,
    Ivan

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  6 років тому +8

      Hi Ivan, I generally do not adjust the master fader (it stays at 0). I do sometimes automate the stereo output for outro fades, maybe automating 1db boost for hooks, etc. If you want to have a loud mix without pushing the master bus, a quality limiter is your best bet. I would caution not to rely too heavily on the limiter / maximizer though, as it can change the dynamics of your mix. If you still need headroom at the end of your mix, you should remove any limiting or dynamics processing from the stereo / master bus before delivering to a mastering engineer.

    Not sure if you made a video discussing this already but how does perceived loudness, crest level, saturation, and parallel compression play into this as well. I remember hearing that getting your mix to a higher rms with those techniques alone using busses then doing the limiting and whatever mastering after is what gets loudness? Don’t get me wrong, i’d love to use a simple maximizer limiter on master bus and call it a day without all that other stuff but I know it’s important so could you explain how they play into each other or how you incorporate those techniques (saturation, pcomp, etc.) with the limiter on the master for loudness. @renesoleana1414 3 роки тому +3

      Most of the time the problem is EQ balance, we want everything to sound "hard" . We should try messing with the frequencies instead of level
      There are some frequencies that will give you the ilusión that you track is louder
      But its mostly brighter, harsher little less dynamic-ish
      Plugins like exiter, distortion even playing around with your stereo spread
      Try to play with the release time of the limiter
      And try to add a (multiband) compressor before the Limiter anywhere from 2:1 3:1 not more
      It blends things gently, wich gives you some more overall controll
      And you can try bringinf the Limiter in till you hear a difference, than back off a little
      Its important to hear what is happening when you put the Limiter on,
      Mostly it affects kick,sub and your bass

The loudness recommendations such as -14dB LUFs for Spotify will tolerate a discrepancy of 1dB so if you want to be louder than every one else, make your mix -13dB LUFs for streaming--that's the digital equivalent of going to 11, maaan!

    Everyone has been trying to get to the commercial sound, but they seem to be on a small detail: Have you checked with how many LUFS is your reference?For example in electronic music EDM, LUFS varies from -10 to -7. I've seen -6 (Yes this exists), take the songs from Spinning Records for example.
    As for the use of 2 limiters on the master I've also heard about it in workshop, but the person didn't want to open the game and gave that "got me" kkk.
    The friend said something about cutting the frequency below 30 hz, that makes all sense because, imagine in all instruments playing at 30 hz?In the end, it kills your hedroom. That's basic but a lot of people still don't get it. It's the first step to a good mix. Another thing to avoid using the eq's that see natives in DAW, try to use the equalizers that emulate analog equipment. Analogue imitators exist for a reason, don't they?

    There's no point in mastering "loud" these days. All the streaming platforms have normalisers on them now so it doesn't matter. More importantly, every stereo has a volume control, so just use that. Making the mix and master sound good, balanced, and punchy is far, far more important than unnaturally crushing it to death for the sake of a competition that none of the actual listeners care about. Yes, it's nice when you can get your master the same as your reference song, but it honestly doesn't matter. I've never, ever, ever heard of anyone taking back a CD to the shop because it wasn't mastered loud enough.

    blasting the compressor plugin does not help cuz that will just distort the audio badly
    using BASS amp plugin wont help either nor does a limiter really help much
    what I end up doing is opening a Channel EQ plugin and just boost the mids and lows and raise the gain in channel eq to +7 db I find doing this doesn't destroy your dynamic range or distort audio too much vs blasting a compressor

    Nice vid! So if I use ozone 8 maximizer in my mix, and get the RMS to a competitive level, then I don't need to use it when I'm mastering, right? Or is it better to have a lot of headroom in my mix, bounce it, and then use this technique in my master?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  6 років тому +1

      If you're mastering in a seperate session than the mix, you should leave any limiting or maximizing to the mastering process. You don't want to limit your mix more than once.

    • @MartinDef_
      @MartinDef_ 6 років тому +1

      Gotcha! If I do this technique in my mastering, should I have my ceiling set to -0,1 or -0,5 like in this vid?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  6 років тому +3

      Yes, although with the ozone 8 "true peak limiting" setting you'd technically be okay even at 0.0. I like to set it just below (0.1 - 0.5) just to be safe.

    What is your approach to gain staging? I know you mix more aggressively, I’ve seen tutorials where your individual tracks would peak at like -3.0 dB for example. How do you have head room for signal to flow through your chain?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  5 років тому

      hey Kidd, I'm typically mastering in the same session as the mix, so having a ton of headroom isn't as important in this case. I don't want to be too aggressive to the point of undesired distortion or clipping but I also won't let hot levels influence what I hear as right in the mix. I mix with my ears over my eyes. Otherwise, I would send the mix with at least 3-6dB of headroom to another mastering engineer so they can have the flexibility to work accordingly

    • @kiddbillinger3948
      @kiddbillinger3948 5 років тому

      Sean Divine so does that mean that you measure your individual tracks with RMS or LUFS? I get what your saying but I don’t get the method. I mix in a more conservative way. But it just seems like your just saying throw the faders up and put a limiter on and call it a day. I’m just trying to understand your method because I could do that but the mix doesn’t sound better just louder.

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  5 років тому +1

      I'm typically using RMS and true peak throughout the mixing process. I'm a more aggressive mixer by nature and that may not fit your style / approach. This video is only demonstrating one method for achieving loudness. I show others on the channel and you should go with whatever gets the results your after.

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  6 років тому +2

      your mixes will naturally sound a bit different in headphones than on speakers. it will also depend on which headphones you're using and if they're giving you an accurate response. The goal is to get the mix to sound as consistent as possible across all different types of playback (headphones, monitors, consumer speakers, etc.) to do that you have to learn your speakers and know how to compensate for any inaccuracies there in the mixing process

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  6 років тому +1

      Thanks August! I know producers who use the Landr service with good results. My take is if you're completely new to mastering and don't have the patience to learn it, it's an option worth looking in to. If you do have interest in the process, I think it would be wise in the long term to invest in a few good mastering plugins (or a suite like Ozone), watch tutorials and gain experience. You'll eventually get to the point where you understand the exact sound you're after, how to get it and then have much more control over the result :)

    It makes the mix louder , yes. But I find that if you use too much limiting , it kills the dynamics of the song. In that particular track , it seems to have killed the snare. I try not to use more than 2-3db of gain on a limiter , or less if I can. I find that it lets the song breathe more.

  • @OXyGeNe8DJ

    what do you think about this idea; if we add limiters to busses (vocal, drums, instr. synths etc) - before master bus. and let say we did set ceiling to -6db and played threshold and made all busses more louder, than we did send it to master bus. and another limiter for master bus. Does it work or worst way to make it louder?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  6 років тому

      I think you'd be better off using as few limiters as possible and only doing light brickwall limiting on the master bus. That said, no rules try it!

  • @Syklonus
    @Syklonus 4 роки тому

    I find a cheap way of getting up to commercial volume is to use something like DeeGain and add 4Db to the mix signal on the master bus. The advantage is that you don't need to hit it so hard with the limiter threshold to get to the target volume, and this preserves dynamics.The downside is that you do eat into some of your headroom, so it's a balancing act. It's not the optimal way, but it works.

    My knowledge on Limiters is a little iffy, Sean. Is this correct?
    So basically... THRESHOLD - This shaves the peaks off... as in... whatever peaks are above the threshold.
    Output ceiling - The audio gets boosted after the peaks are shaved off.... and the ceiling is basically like the highest the signal will get boosted to?

    • @SeanDivine
      @SeanDivine  6 років тому

      SuperFoxMulder the threshold determines when the limiter will engage (limit the dynamic range) and in the case of a maximizer, it will apply gain proportionally to maximize the level. The ceiling determines the absolute loudest point the limiter allows. So if you set it to -1, no matter how far you lower the threshold, that’s as loud as it will get. A limiter is essentially just a compressor with an extremely high ratio.
