Been playing this game and not once did I felt forced or motivated to buy anything from the store. Which is a plus. It's just fun to take your time. Loot and explore and just goof around.
And that make me want to buy something to appreciate that dev
Honestly, I forget it has a cash shop I respect it, maybe I'll throw them some $. Only if something seems worth it

Before you buy could also mean before you consider?@@ThaSavageKayGamerTag
Yeah, I was 4 hours in and went "wait, shouldn't there be a store in this game?" I had to actively search to see what they were even selling in there.
Best thing about Once Human is that developers are actually listening and improving the game. We already had many patches where they fixed, improved or removed certain aspects that players complained about. They also recently had an interview with Pirate Software and what came out of it seems promising. Its too early to dismiss this game based on what Jake said.
The devs honestly deserve our patience they are great and trying their best

@@TheZoenGaming After several attempts Jake got up the slope. Still not great but he did do it.
As soon as he went up a section that wasn't slippery, he got out. At most, it was bad diegetic design as there should had been some slime or something to show that it wasn't climbable.
wait until you're a hole because of texture issues lol
I’m really enjoying this game; it has a chill vibe. Although I’m not usually into survival games, this one has hooked me. The live service elements don’t matter much to me, but the gameplay is simple and engaging. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I always appreciate hearing your views 🙏🏾
Is okay bro. I am with u. This is the mmo what i searching for.

I agree. I'm having a great time, and I do expect the faults to improve.

For free games, the title should be "Before you try". You're welcome.

In the first day and first hours of the First Descendant, my friend tried to buy battle-pass and I have stopped him. We have played some, finished the story and left the game; the grind was evil kind. Anyway, if I wasn't there to stop him, he was definetely going to buy frames or cosmetics for a game he would play only for 30-35 hours and leave. Some people built different, trying to buy before try.

Yeah but then it'd sound like they're stupid a-holes trying to tell you not to try things for yourself and only listen to their oh so expert opinion on what you should and shouldn't get for your own enjoyment...

Game is more like Secret World meets Remnant, and a lot of H.P. Lovecraft atmosphere. and you DO NOT need to pay a dime for anything, it is not needed. My friends and I have been playing since launch fully free and nothing is paywalled. it's only cosmetics.
Used to love secret world. So much time and money spent only for it to get ruined by greed. Scared to try this one. 😅
I thought I was the only one who was getting Secret World vibes.
Knowing Netease, it won't be the same for long, bet me.
The game is thousand miles behind remnant, gunplay wise. Its not even comparable
@@PrestonMaxey No, me too. But not entirely in a good way. TSW had a lot of crap in it too. Great spooky first area with the zombies then I lost interest.
if its a F2P, and the model is done well. meaning no pressure with shops etc etc, just lets you play accumulated premium currency, has events and stuff than it could be a good model. I mean Genshin is an example where they introduce you to the mechanic, than they leave you be. Its up to you to go to the wish shop.
The author of this video is stupid as hell.
I understand your point, but Genshin is not a good example because of Powercreep u will have to either fram a tremendous amount of primogems or buy the currency to have it easier in the newer regions.
@@armagamingtv8525
Atleast with genshin, there really isnt any pvp or leaderboard stuff to compete in, so it doesnt really matter much.
@@armagamingtv8525 I never farmed Primos. and manage to get most of the 5 star characters. If you want to have 5 star weapons aswell. I can see why you need to spend. I get your point though.
Lol...genshin as a positive example....brainrot
I’ve been playing the game for around 8 hours and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it with all the stuff you can do between exploring and boss battles and all the little activities you can do. I think a lot of people forget too and something you didn’t mention is the pvp aspect as well. There will be base raiding and player combat as well which is gonna be sick if they do it right because imagine you and your group are fighting a boss and outta no where another group pulls up to try and ambush you to take your loot etc. I like high risk games like that with that survival aspect
Feels a lot like The Division meets The Secret World.
Kinda yeah, i miss TSW a lot, but this game seems to have A LOT of sunny, beautiful days. Lot's of comments talking a bout having a "chill time"...i mean, nothing chill about a 6 legged bus walking around....so something is off
Did all the closed betas and am currently playing it, you're definitely gonna feel the TSW nostalgia everywhere you look in this game. I've been loving it for the weird factor that's saturated throughout!

just fyi for everyone using the quote, the full version is: "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes is better than a master of one"
Also another quote people like to misuse is "The customer is always right, in matters of taste"
Yes, but that doesn’t translate well to games. Another good quote that’s more pertinent,” a game made for everyone is a game for no one”.
@@calebfillman8815another is “the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb” meaning the exact opposite of what most people think the shortened version means. Basically the company you choose is better than one you were born/forced into
@@monkeynards1189 I see we are doing random quotes so here is mine "action is foundational key to success"
No the " but oftentimes is better than a master of one" part was something writers in the 21st century started adding to the line but the Original phrase Jack of all Trades was not used as an insult but a genuine complement that someone had great understanding of many subjects the master of None part was added later changing it so a more negative or ambiguous turn of phrase
That logo on the wall at @2:51 looks familiar for some reason😂
Jake those multiple currencies are almost all free currencies you get from progression. Only one of them is premium. The others are things you get for doing stuff, like questing, salvaging stuff, etc. True, there's like way too many "store" and other currency pages, and it's pretty confusing to look at, but you can't buy most of the stuff in them with real money. Only one actual store takes real currency, and again, it's mostly cosmetics.
The battle pass is $9.99 and is only cosmetics and a few consumables and currencies that you can get in the game anyway. I'd say the more important reason to get the battle pass is to support the devs. The free battle pass is pretty generous.
it's still horrible that they choose to add so many currency. i played on cbt and now on release and that still confuse me
20hrs in, not bad for live service. they usually cannot hold my attention this long. building is fun, but can be finnicky at times, story is compelling, bosses are cool, map is huge. idk how long it will last but i'm into it way more than i was the first descendant.
Agree with you
Does it look like it will be fun solo over long term, or do you eventually hit a wall where you have to have companions to progress?
@@MaraxisArcanist It seems like some people are enjoying multiplayer, but you can totally play and enjoy by yourself (you still see everyone running and fighting around you, is very funny some times). And if something is to hard, you can always invite random people to help you.
@@MaraxisArcanisti played up until the second zone solo, i completed every side quest and main mission up to that point, i cleared out most of that corner of the map and i got to a respectable level for the next zone, it was so fun, especially exploring would recommend a solo run
I'm the opposite way; The First Descendant is infinitely more fun than this, tried it out for a friend. But this is coming from a decade-long Warframe player, admittedly.
You could always go with "before you try" instead of "before you buy" 😂
No
Brand recognition is always preferred

the early game is easy. There is Hard and Nightmare mode too.
It's typical live service trapping, the the first 30-40% of the story will be easy mode/tutorial stuff to ease you in.... then "POW" your hit with the grind and difficulty spikes which make you want to pay to go back to being easier.

@@The-Spanish-Inquisition490 There is none of that in this game at the moment. Why even comment when you have no idea what you are talking about?
First time i have to disagree with Jake. This game is Early Access, and was marketed as such, except not on the Steam page for some reason. I get what Jake is saying, but even in Early Access, Once Human is the most fun i've had both solo and with friends. The survival aspect is good, the storyline is linear, but there's no need to follow it if you don't want to. The building and customization are great. Thge atmosphere changes in a very natural way so you get a bit of everything. Wanna go out on a cleaning spree? You can. Wanna get underground, explore deep storylines and fight bosses? You can. Wanna get a nice view of the land while fishing in a lake with the sun on your face? YOU CAN. Once Human speaks to many players in different ways, and that's exceptional in it's own. You can spend money on cosmetics and ''looking cool'', but for the real experience you HAVE to grind. Once Human is a great survival game for both beginners in the genre and experienced players, and with it still being in Early Access, this game has huge potential.

Live service game.... live service game.... live service game.... live service game. suuuuuch an amazing year for video games.
too many of them imo
To be fair, Helldivers nailed it. Im still playing at around 170 hours in game and its truly the best live service model Ive ever played.
Don't worry, 80% of them will be dead and shut down by next year. Eventually companies will figure out they don't know how to make live service games that makes people want to stay for longer than a month. There is a reason a lot of people are going back to play games from 10-20 years ago instead of current day trash.
@@reaperraider999 I sincerely hope publishes learn the RIGHT lesson from Helldivers success instead of just seeing the broad results of “live service game made lots of money!” And take it as evidence that they need to keep pumping live service games out without digging any deeper

I enjoyed the early playtests well enough, but the single biggest drawback to this game is the 6-week "season" resets.
Being forced to start over so often means nothing has any value, and so, the game feels entirely wasted.
I know Rust does the same thing, but Rust also has ways around it.
This does not.
It's a big enough issue that I feel Jake should have mentioned it too.
What ways do you mean in rust?
This does have a way around it. Google "Once Human Eternaland"
There are way around if from what ive heard.
A lot of your items don't reset for example: cosmetics, blueprints, rare resources, your house "blueprints" are saved so all you have to do is hit a button to bring your house back after reset. When I heard the game had resetting every 6 weeks I was shocked any dev thought that would be a good idea... but when you do more searching and realize you actually get to save all the important stuff it actually makes more sense... i wouldn't count it out just for that, plus the devs have already said they are open to changing that based on how the community feels about it.
Not everything will be deleted, plus this game is a week old so anything could change at this point
@@Kim-oh9ng you will only reset level and resources the blueprints and cosmetics and house project gonna be there too
The way the damage numbers pop as well as the fact it's a third person shooter is giving heavy Remnant 2 vibes.
8:18 that Deagle reload animation is eerily similar to Modern Warfare 2019's Deagle reload animation. It's not the exact same but very close. They might've taken it and changed it a bit lol
I just realized Jake always says "quirky elements" no matter the style of game 🤣
Hahaha love jake, bro is the most genuine reviewer in gaming
This might be the first time I disagree with Jake, I am actually enjoying this game a lot, in the 3 days that I have been playing it, I already lost the track of time twice (it would have been three times was it not for my wife jaja) and that has not happen to me with any game, in a very long time. Sure there are microtransactions, and season pass and all the GaaS crap, but without any of that, you can still get actually pretty good loot, and I personally don't feel the game to be too grindy, for example, every resource node gives you a pretty decent amount of resources, and even more with upgraded tools (unlike Subsistence where you need to chop 1M trees for a foundation and two walls). Is not flawless in anyway, it can be a bit janky, buggy and what not, but I have not had any single game breaking experience (aside from a few T-Posing or sliding character, which some times happens in online games, so is not that bad). I do agree with jake, in that there is a lot of lore and background story and what not, but I am not that into that, so personally i am not affected by that. I love that I can play PvE, which means I don't have to worry about random players ruining the experience for me. The game does have a ton of content, and that is both good and bad, good because there is a toon of stuff and exploration bad because it can be a bit overwhelming.
7:00 That is because Net Ease is known for doing exactly that. In fact, I have played several of their mobile games, which are actually really good for mobile games, but they are all this same gameplay loop with different stories, skins and characters.
I just started my playthrough of this game, and I immediately recognized everything mechanically because it's exactly what you said it feels like.
I spent time in the open demo and it was fun but.... I have way too much other stuff to play to give this more time. The base building is fun and it plays well enough, but with First Descendant dropping the same time it comes down to one or the other
I like the monster designs but the game really gives off a late 2010s Unity survival game feel.
Well. Yeah. Because the designs for the monsters are ripped off preestablished creatures and cryptids. The first two giant creatures we see? It’s just Siren Head.

Really important that there is only one premium currency in the game, and "all of the other currencies" in the game are earned completely through progression and grind, and cannot be bought. There's a lot of them, but they all do have unique uses. My favorite part about this game is how little pressure there is to spend any money. The early game is confusing and everything is thrown at the player at once, but man when it starts clicking and you become familiar with everything, there's a lot of freedom in how you want to spend your time in the game.
Been a while since I last dropped around here. Almost forgot how good your reviews are
I understand not liking the game but it's definitely not designed in a way to get you to spend money at least not currently. There arent that many currencies. I played Lost Ark and BDO a little bit and they were ridiculous with currencies. Once Human has been alright with mostly just your typical survival resources you collect. For f2p I've been surprised how satisfying combat can feel and how intricate house building is. I'm only like 7 days in but it has been fun with zero pressure to buy anything. It's all cosmetics in the shop similar to LOL or Fortnite. Not saying they won't go p2w greed mode later but atm it's generous and non predatory. For that reason I'm gonna buy the battlepass even though there's nothing interesting in there to me. It's definitely underrated. I dont love some content being time gated but I get it. Calling this game soulless is wild though. For f2p it's underrated.
You said it's early access, but nothing on Steam says it's early access.
Clearly he did very little research, played an hour and then just bitched.
. I think he got in Early Access before the lunch. the game itself is not in EA, though its not a polished AAA either. I'm having a blast with it.

I know this an odd question but how do you upload this video with this resolution scale it’s amazing for iPhone , most of the video cut 2 chunks of black screen this is good!!!
I'd love to play this, but I can't unless I change how I play games. In the demo it was impossible to re-map the button F, so I couldn't play that. In the full release, F can be re-mapped, but E can't. The problem with these two keys not being re-mappable is they're part of the ESDF setup. And on top of that, you can't set inverted mouse.

me and my daughter play this game together. We're really liking it. The enemy a.i. at the beginning is kinda rough, but other than that its been really enjoyable. Haven't felt pressured to spend any money that I didn't want to
I have 7 hours in the game and i'm enjoying it so far.
I've put a couple of days into Once Human and it has surprisingly held my interest. The best building is pretty solid and it comes with two massive quality of life benefits; crafting pulls from storage and you can relocate your base fully intact without needing to tear it down. The quests are almost Ubisoft level of schlock but I ended up so over leveled that I've been plowing through them when I need a break from harvesting resources and crafting. The Deviations, your Pals basically, are very handy for the ones that do stuff around your base like gathering ore or wood. I honestly forget to use the combat ones. They are helpful but... nothing has been a challenge yet. I'd recommend a try as I don't feel as negative about it as Jake did. As more people play it I think it will gain a bit more soul.
You clearly don't know what schlock is or don't actually play any Ubisoft games.
With so many bad games these days I am surprised to be enjoying Once Human. There are a LOT of features in here inspired by other games. At first I slapped a foundation on the ground and randomly placed my furnaces and workbenches which was good enough, but later on I spent hours designing a cosy home that I can continue to upgrade and decorate as I unlock stuff.
From the clip thumpnail - “Once human, now a Clown.”
I've been spending a lot of time in this game and have been really enjoying it, ESPECIALLY if you compare it to something like First Descendent. First Descendent is a game created entirely to push microtransactions and has every manipulative anti-consumer practice in the book in it's "game", as I've been describing it to people, "First Descendent is a Nexon game, through and through."
Comparatively, the live service side of Once Human is incredibly light and not forced on you, it's pretty easy to progress (Maybe even too easy), and at no point have I ever felt like any of the microtransactions are necessary. A good demonstration of their take on this is that you can buy the "big skin" in the shop right now with the EXACT amount of currency you can buy, so you can buy that, and just that, unlike First Descendent, where you are forced to either always buy way too much or multiple bundles because everything conveniently costs slightly more than the lowest amount of premium currency you can buy. The charm of the game I can understand won't be for everybody, it does have some pretty rough edges, but me and my friends have been having a blast with it anyways.
It wasn't actually brought up in the video, but I see a lot of people complaining about the "seasonal wipes every 6 weeks". Those people should probably read about how the seasons actually work, because a lot of people are spreading misinformation about it, so much so that the developers just earlier today released an announcement (again), explaining seasons and how they work. I was just as skeptical, so much so, in fact, that I originally was going to write the game off before release because of the "wipe every 6 weeks" thing... I read up on it and it's not nearly as bad as everyone is making it out to be, you keep pretty much everything that's important, and you have your own personal "Eternaland" where you can keep all your goodies, you can even bring some of those goodies with you into new seasonal servers for a jump start. It's very similar to how PoE or Diablo 4 handles seasons, where there is an "Eternal Realm" where you have permanent progress, and then seasonal servers where you play through a new experience. Unlike the 2 games I just mentioned though, you DO actually get to bring some stuff from the "Eternaland" with you into each new season. But I can't do the whole thing justice in a youtube comment section, so I strongly encourage people to look into the developers actual description of seasons before jumping to conclusions.
yeah i love how the entirety of any negative buzz for the most part about the game is people not f***ing paying attention and listening to the devs, and they're the ones asking for the devs to listen to the player base smh

@@TheALEXiSounds video could've been filmed before the release. Still yeah it's a full release so claiming it's "early access" if that's the case is confusing
Lmao, maybe the game felt like early access. Careless mistake
30 hours in, still loving it
even more with friends lol
"This feels like a PUBG asset flip" - as a train with arms and legs appears.
"soulless" is a term i can understand in gaming. well said.
"As of right now it's only mouse and keyboard control, so some options and features are missing."
I would think it would be the other way around. What is missing with kb+m?
You are wrong. Start steam with administrator and then it will work with controller. Been using an Xbox controller since release
Some of the enemies in this video gave me Generation Zero vibes
great review, im going to give this a try, from what they have right now, on release, un finished, it looks pretty dam good, especially for free plenty of time for them to flush out any issues and fill in the bland grindy spots.
I would play this but the seasonal wipes throws me off.
The important stuff you can keep and they wont wipe it off, they only wipe off resources and your progression
@@hallooos7585 In a survival game? Yeah. No thanks.
@@hallooos7585 I really wanna play this also, but my LEVEL gets wiped? Why? What's the fucking point in playing then? Lmao
@@voteforfire Levels are there just to kinda make the progression a bit more linear, I found it pretty natural and quick to gain levels. Levels only really matter for crafting, as with levels you unlock some crafting stuff and you specialize your character. Leveling up isn't really a grind tbh, it's getting blueprints for cool gear that's the main thing and you get to keep those after the wipe. So in general wipe is pretty much a way for developers to introduce new stuff for old and new players without making the new players start with a new character just to play through new early game content. I think it's a good system if done properly because it can make new and old players want to play the game.
It's not a full "wipe". The idea is that SOME of your progress gets reset so you have more things to do when new locations and objectives get added. The last thing you want is to be overleveled all the time and clear everything in 10 minutes and be done with the game until next season.
The fact that they are intending to do six week wipes, with every new 'season' pushing the story forward inch by inch, is what killed it for me. If I have to go through the tedium of re-leveling and re-farming materials every six weeks just to get one new mission worth of story content? Well, I don't have that kind of time, and it's too quick a cadence for devs to put out good, non buggy work. Especially when they still need to bugfix and optimize so much as is. Which is a shame, because I really enjoy the core gameplay and exploration. This game has potential, but needs to pivot on how it moves forward or it's not going to get nearly as much traction as it needs.
That novel you wrote is completely 100% FALSE information.
"Once a new scenario begins, will I lose my previous progress?
We are aware that many players are concerned that their in-game progress will be reset in 6 weeks, but we are here to reassure you that
this will NOT happen! We value the time and effort you put into this game, so the items and gear you have obtained from the seasonal scenario will be retained in various ways."
Their latest answer, so its not so bleak.
You can literally just spend 5 minutes reading the actual seasonal mechanic and what gets carried over.
I love how people play Rust, DayZ, Escape from Tarkov by the millions, yet no progress carries over and they're fine with it.
@@TheALEXiSounds i think the problem is with the MMO players, they are not used to this and this game is a weird combination, is like a MMO rust
@@TheALEXiSounds Difference between 6 weeks and half a year such as in EFT.
this game feels like Life After
Tbh this game is fun def funner with friends but it’s still fun playing by yourself. And when it comes to spending money it’s really only cosmetic so you don’t feel forced to buy anything tbh. It’s overall a good game tho especially for it being free.
When you link accounts do you really have to give access to your id and social media? Seen alot about it in the steam reviews..what about the random 2 startup programs that are just there when you download lol i want to play this but dont want to give my id or social media
Depends on where you live. Some country law requires this. Like China. Where this game is made. But you do not, in the US, have to provide any of this that I have found through hours of digging.
@tomspence3461 bet I appreciate you brother! I was a little nervous about that haha I don't mind linking things but the social media and Id had me on edge
i linked it to my discord account, which links to an email address for junk mail. im level 15 now and just did the first boss, nothing stopped me from playing. am i missing something here? whats the fuss about giving ID or personal information? im in australia btw, not sure if that plays a role.
No you don’t have to do that though, if you want extra starchrome and rare resources you might want to that to recieve those rewards.
@acrazydurian I was reading a bunch of stuff on the steam reviews about having to give out a bunch of personal info, just got nervous is all haha
This looks just like their mobile game LifeAfter with a slightly different theme.
As long as they don't have the formula machine, spent way to long trying to get the different guns and armor.
The LifeAfter I want
Literally just said that before I seen this comment. But yeah , seems just like that game
@NCRranger11 Seriously. Though I still hate it to this day and my level was really high on there For no reason😂
Also I have my own camp with no one in it😂😂😂😂 When I first started, had like 20 something, people stopped playing for a while.Forgot about it , then came back to nothing but just me
I can definitely see there's something at its core, and I love the creature designs, but that makes me think it didn't start development as a live service game. Nothing really to lose by checking it out, but I kinda feel like you'll have that looming sense of hitting a wall at some point and have to grind.
That's the beauty of the seasons that will bring new content and the only main thing you lose is your level. So you will never stay at max level for very long.
I don't agree with few points mentioned in this review, I enjoyed playing this game to level 21 solo without spending any money, most games lack this kind of creating, leveling, looting. I was very surprised that this game had few features that's lacking in recent most games, specially on building/moving house. At the moment I am exploring and doing main story, not much of a story but content is great. But I do wounder what's next once I am done exploring whole map and story. I find this game way better than first descendant on leveling, exploring and grinding.
IDK I disagree with this take. My wife and I have been playing together for about 20 hours now and there have been multiple puzzles and things that we've really appreciated. I think it is a nice breath of new ideas in the MMO space. I think about going home to play every day and I haven't felt that way about a lot of games that cost me way more.
Not to mention, never once have I felt like they were pushing me to buy anything. Hell, all the currency and stuff you can get from the battle pass is on the free track. The paid is 100% cosmetics. That's pretty cool in my opinion as a consumer. We've spent 20 hours in maybe 1/20th of the map and are already over leveled for that area, but want to see wht the next side quest has to offer. We've tried to save someone's disabled friend as she ran to get him medicine from a nearby hospital, we've found a torn photo of two brothers looking out for each other who got separated and killed apart, we've looked into a kid's memory of him swiping all these ID cards from the big baddies to hide treasure, and have found tons of cool treasure maps...
I think our ideas of fun may just not align. I've had an absolute blast.
I think our ideas of fun may not align, yes you're exactly right, real gamers don't want live action service games, also as A MAN, we don't walk around with fake swords and poleaxes poking our buddies. So yea, align differently forsure. You need to grow up then maybe you'll realize.
I'd hate to see what the wife aka Tran looks like, anyone that would marry a kid with a tin knight outfit and wooden stick has to look like a straight baboon
Why does the thumbnail guy look like the sketch vid?
I played the beta tests, they did change quite a bit on release for example new cutscenes (i think), design changes and removed voice lines, I'm sure theres more but thats just what i noticed, but ye so far the game is decent but i highly suggest playing with a friend tho.
Just a note, you can go first person and use the weapon sites/scopes by just clicking right mouse, instead of holding it. Ran around with a sniper for a while PO'd because I couldn't use the scope... yes, it's my fault, but just letting others know.

I really liked this game but without controller support I have to wait and revisit it once they add that
i hope the devs see your feedback, the game has alot of potential, add mobs of zombies, big monsters at every corner, fast gameplay
9:40 No game NEEDS voice acting. People play AAA games and expect voice acting in every game now, including from smaller studios. The more features gamers expect from studios, the more expensive it becomes for studios AND the more likely it'll become shit. People also don't like to read anymore. I'm on my second run of an isometric game called "Weird West" that although has voice acting, most of the dialogue has to be read and it's one of the best games that's been overlooked in 2022. I'm easily over 100 hours in that game on my second run.
Meh just get AI to do it.
@@TheDrackOfSpadesYeah AI for AI characters, not the rest of the human characters
