I totally freaked out my daughter's Spanish teacher a few years ago like this. My daughter told her that I spoke some Spanish but not a lot. It's important to understand the affect/impact using a different dialect in a place it isn't from will have. While using Latin American Spanish is Spain may get you looked at as a country rube or "the cousin no one talks about" by racist Castillian locals, using Spaniard Spanish in the Americas is not only impractical, it has entirely DIFFERENT connotations, that will ALSO get you in trouble. Latin American Spanish is the more useful Spanish for anyone in the USA or the Americas and Australia/New Zealand.
