He moved to France at 10 years old with his Parents. His dad was a member of the Communist party of America so he had to moved to France to continue his film career.
A really great singer. I've been to his grave and he's facing Paramount Pictures Studios. It's always sunny and he's surrounded by coconut trees and green green grass
Wow! I had no idea that he was American until just now and just googled him. I was born and raised in France until I migrated to America when I was 14. My family used to listen to him all the time.
You are welcome. I suppose he gave some interviews in English, but they are not to find on UA-cam. It is also one in English given in Greece. I will try to upload it.
I tried, but I couldn't upload that interview. Unfortunately it is blocked worldwide because of the copyrights. But it can be found on Facebook, Joe in Greece.
Alicia Artaza.
I also don't understand French and I am so glad to hear an interview of him in English. It is another interview in English, in Greece, but it is blocked on UA-cam. It can be seen only on Facebook.
It’s amazing he preferred to build his career singing in French until now people believe he was French. I told my friends he was from USA but they didn’t believe me until they searched in google
He liked France and the French music maybe because he arrived in France at the age of 13 and he was impressed by it. He always loved America and he was proud of being American, he went there every year, he even went to study at the University of Michigan, where he also was a professor of anthropology for a time and where he received a prize, a Hopwood Award for one of his short novels he wrote (in English, of course) at that time. He spoke French very well, indeed, but he always kept his American accent and his style was always American. How he said, he sang French music in his American style. He lived in two worlds, how it is named his second album "Les Deux Mondes De Joe Dassin". But his first album was "Joe Dassin A New York" and it was recorded at New York, in November 1966. I also didn't know that he was an American, years ago, I found out that only much later. Now he is in his beloved America, for ever!
Joe could have broken into U.S. show business had he tried a lot earlier in his career. I think that at the ripe age of 42 he was at ease with himself as far fame and expansion were concerned. RIP. Joe .
When journalist speaks randomly of « taking drugs » we can see a glimpse of uncomfort in his eyes. Cause he was in fact taking a lot of drugs at that time.
He was really amazing in anything he did! And he did so many fantastic things in his short life! I think that his sons are speaking English. I only heard his older son, Jonathan, once speaking in English.
Something that’s interesting; he died suddenly eating in a restaurant; restaurants that he says treated him differently now that he was famous; what he says that changed.
Which micro chip Country made girls write French music in Notebook cahier ? Singing hour in School ? Joe DASSIN ! IN AFRIKA WAS ONLY RADIO AND IMAGINATION OF HOW THEY LOOK ! UNTIL SUD KIVU ! MOVIES ONLY IN HIGH SCHOOL !
Han existido y aún existen hombres con grandes cualidades que consumen droga. Pero hay que destacar los aportes y no las debilidades. Por lo menos JOE DASSIN nos aportó con su calidad como cantante grandes e inolvidables momentos de alegría
Joe Dassin born and raised in US and even he went to US university, but his French was amazing, better than his English and someone who knew him told me that he could speak Hebrew.
But he was an American and this never changed. He has written five novels during the time he was a student at University of Michigan and all were written in English. For one of them he received a Hopwood award, in 1958.
It’s very sad he died young very nice singer and I am very impress he could speak French perfectly, there are many who think he was French from France
My love for Joe is decades old. He makes people happy.

He was actually born in Brooklyn, NY to Jewish parents
He’s buried in a Jewish cemetery in California

He was such a class act, Joe Dassin. Thank you for posting this.
This is valuable footage - thank you for posting. Joe Dassin passed away within a year that this interview took place.

@@marinelap_617 For some reason it's strange hearing Joe Dassin speaking english, his voice and manners reminds me of Telly "Kojak" Savalas.
Yes, his voice is low but also beautiful and sweet! I adore his voice! I adore him!

Grateful to providence for hearing him tell part of his story and he is exactly as I had hoped. Do his sons speak English?

Joe Dassin born and raised in US and even he went to US university, but his French was amazing, better than his English and someone who knew him told me that he could speak Hebrew.
His English was surprisingly good considering he spent the majority of his life in France.
But he was an American and this never changed. He has written five novels during the time he was a student at University of Michigan and all were written in English. For one of them he received a Hopwood award, in 1958.
When you have enough money a game in Europe that’s pretty good.
