      Three actually.......if you’re not using mains water and there is fine silt or organic matter in your water it’s a good idea to flush the system out periodically before it bungs up completely.......fine silts can pass through the normal filter meshes ..... very fine filters will reduce the flow and pressure.......maybe too much!!!!!

    One important thing to note is these low pressure systems operate at around 20 psi so you will need a pressure reducer for the system if you are running it off of your home or street pressure which can run anywhere from 60 -100 psi. That would blow these fittings off :) . Nice video!

    When I get ready to plant my tomatoes I clip all those lower leaves off all plants at once, so I don't have to fiddle with each individual plant in the garden. I also clip them off with scissors, so as to avoid damaging the main stem in any way. I do all my suckers the same way ... with scissors. I also cut off my peppers, tomatoes etc instead of twisting/breaking them off the plant. Of course I can choose to do it that way because I don't have as many plants as you do. I think it is much easier to clip off beans/cucumbers etc and not fight with the plant to remove them. I see so many people struggling with removing beans/peppers etc, that I can't believe they aren't just snipping them off. YMMV ... you've got it down to a system. Although I enjoy the whole gardening process, I do try to streamline some of the smaller steps along the way. Take care you guys.

    Used coffee grounds also make a great soil treatment at planting time, especially for these tropical/jungle plants that come from high-organic acid soils, trying to make it in clay ground. Just mix some spent grounds with your backfill, and it will also draw in more worms & subsurface symbiotes to enrich the soil. If you compost, mix the grounds through that as well. Everybody loves coffee :)

    I just installed a drip system in one of my plots. There was a problem with keeping the drip tape in position with all the expansion / contraction. The tape gets long and stretches when it's empty and hot, and then contracts when the water cools it. I constantly had to go adjust it's position to correct for the movement. I wasn't going to put a staple every foot to hold it in place (which probably wouldn't have worked anyway). So, I ordered some 1/8" UV protected shock cord material, zip tied it tightly to the end of the drip tape and connected about 3' of cord to a staple ….this assembly keeping constant gentle tension on the tape. So far it's working (one week in). A staple near the feed connection to your manifold is essential to resist the pull of the shock cord from the other end.

    • @edwardgatter4610
      @edwardgatter4610 4 роки тому

      Hal Cobb ..... good point my friend....... I’ve used elastic bungy cord at the ends of drip tube and the main feeder pipe which I loosely cable tied to a straining wire which was a couple of inches off the ground and it could then expand and contract easily with the elastic cord just tensioning it slightly and keeping it nice and tidy.

    • @halcobb1627
      @halcobb1627 4 роки тому

      Ed, I picked the 1/8" shock cord over the other (thicker) diameters to keep the inch/lbs of tension down. My assumption was you want a long gentle pull, rather than a large diameter bungee cord (which would put too much tension on the manifold end). My rows are about 90' long, and around 3' of 1/8 shock cord (Ebay) seems to accomplish both: 1. not too much tension, and 2. enough linear 'give' to accommodate the length change on the drop tape. I'm in TX, so the black drip tape becomes essentially a solar hot water collector in the direct sun.

    • @fishnlady
      @fishnlady 4 роки тому

      @@edwardgatter4610 I was having the same issue with our drip tape and in the comments further up made a comment and asked for help. You suggested to tie the end of the tape to some sort of an elastic to keep it in place when expanding and contracting. I didn't have anything but old cloth type bungee cords that are long and the tension was not much but enough to keep them in place. So far it's working. Thank you, Edward Gatter for suggesting it to me. You're a good man.

    Now I have a plan! I saw video on putting drip tape under fabric and that is not what I wanted to do. I will do it on top like you suggested and I can see the emitter working like you said. Thank you so much. I have the drill auger and agree with you that is great. I want max life for fabric and drip system, so here in Michigan, it is best to remove them in fall and re-install in spring. I am 77yo, so weeding is really hurting to do. You did not mention an irrigation timer, but I plan that so I can leave for a few days at a time. I grow less than you do. I had six gardens which is down to three now. That still helps with our food and the chickens. At my age it is important to keep moving. If you just sit in a chair, your on your way out. I just bought a 37ton log splitter and my wife called me insane. Well that might be worth contemplating ... she might be right😂

    I love your videos and have learned much from them. I live on a hillside with clay soil and a lot of shade, and have a weed problem, so have switched to container gardening and weed mat. I now grow enough vegetables for the two of us, cauliflower, curly kale, Swiss chard, beetroot, endive, perpetual spinach, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, and my broad beans are coming on nicely for an early harvest.. I sowed carrots yesterday. I live in New Zealand so we are heading towards winter. The ‘garden’ doesn’t look pretty because I have to find the sunny spots for the containers, but I was very glad to have fruit and vegetables handy during the recent lockdown, and container gardening is so much easier when one is getting old.

    This year I have ditched my tomato cages, and went the field fence like you all, with a little test run last year with 6 plants I found it so much better.

    Trying to get my husband to start with the drip. We work so hard setting out our plants and then its hit or miss on the weather. There is just two of us home now but we give a lot of our garden to our boys. They really don't have the room to grow much. I can or freeze a lot of our garden harvest and enjoy doing that. We have a tiller that we run through the garden but he uses no material to cover the rows. I'm really going to have to sit him down and make him watch this. Our garden is only about 30 X70. I think. I'm never good at guessing length. lol I don't think it would be that expensive to set up the first year. He is going to be 70 and I am going to be 65 and we don't need to be hoeing or tilling that much. Thanks for posting this. You two are awesome.

    Can't wait to see what else you plant! Peppers, cukes, green beans, zucchini, melons, oh goodness, so much fun! When I used to have my big garden, I used the drip hose system. It served so well and didn't waste water.i recommend your site to lots of people. Keep up sharing your farming ideas....my God Nbless you and your girls. Bev
