You are 100% in the money in your theory of polymer softening with temperature, although it's more significant in effect at the 90s and 100s like South Florida summer ball. Having personally lived in South Florida for most of my life and played in Alberta, Canada, I can personally guarantee that baum bats do better in cooler weather, however, this also applies to all wood bats in peak performance. All woods are harder at lower temperatures, but they're also stiffer as well as less durable. This is the baum bat difference since polypropylene is the more durable around 60-70 degrees and stays close to its peak into the lower winter temperatures. As for corked vs baum bat performance, the demarini and axe wood composites are more like corked bats whereas the baum bat is an abomination of wood sheets, fiber reinforcement, and foam. How it is considered a wood bat is beyond my understanding, but in most leagues where it is used, it has not been known to be a difference maker, so in essence to the purpose of a wood bat league, it gets the job done just fine and despite the price tag, saves a lot of money for players who have trouble finding the barrel. At this point 1 baum bat is equal to 3 wood bats in price. The science tells us that corked bats do not enhance the performance of a bat. However, it is illogical to ignore the fact that it enhances the performance of the player, which is more important to the overall results. If corking a bat did nothing for performance, there would be no point in cupped bats either, since that is in essence, a legal level of weight removal in the endcap.
Hey everyone, physicist here. Our main goal is maximizing the exit velocity of the ball after hitting it, because this maximizes the distance it will travel. To calculate this velocity, we would use conservation of momentum (“p” = mv): p_1 = m_bat v_bat1 - m_ball v_ball1 =p_2 = m_bat v_bat2 + m_ball v_ball2 Final ball speed: v_ball2 = (m_bat/m_ball)(v_bat1 - v_bat2) - v_ball1 So we can see that decreasing the bat mass in isolation decreases the exit speed and therefore hit distance. The problem is we don’t just change the bat mass…. The hitter is able to swing the lighter bat faster, which would increase v_bat1, which serves to increase exit speed. So the two variable have antagonistic effects, and the only way to know which effect is more important is to conduct a study and see how fast professional athletes can swing this cork bat, and how much faster that is than a normal bat. This video attempts to do just that, and it appears the increase in bat speed may offset the decrease in mass. I hope this helps. I love physics, so I will try to answer any questions you all have.
I’m disappointed that the $40 Amazon special didn’t make an appearance … I feel like a new $40 special should be a requirement for EVERY wood bat video going forward 😂
Well it seems like you need to some temperature testing on those bats. Build a cold container, a warm container, and a hot container... then test each temp bat to bat. I can maybe help with those containers if you need. You can also build humidity containers to test humidity effects... that is for baseballs and bats...
Ive lived in denver my whole life (actually the SW suburbs, which are around 6000 ft). The first time I picked up a baseball at sea level I literally almost dropped it in surprise. "Wait why is it so soft and heavy???" 😆
Test your theory. Put the bat in a cooler with ice to cool it. Take it out and take some hacks. Maybe have like 3 so you can switch as they warm up. After that, let them warm up and see what you find. Maybe take a heating blanket or something to increase the temp even more so you get a wider spread in temp.
He already made a similar video comparing "pro cut" bats with the $40 Louisville Genuine Mix among other bats and they performed basically the same. The $180 maple bats you see are a scam when you can get the exact turn model, material, and size that you want out of a $70 bat. Hell I would still rather take a gamble with the blem bats as you can get multiple and very likely get at least one that's very good while still paying less than $180.
I swear the sound of a corked bat is much different than non corked but has to be in my head or players wouldn’t get away with it. But boy it sounds like a Ferrari V-12
Thank you for saying the point about bat speed. To me it's one of the most obvious points about the corked bat but you're right mythbusters just completely ignores it
Freaking Mythbusters tested a corked bat where they had the same bat speed with that as a regular bat. For the legends that they are they seemed to pretty commonly overlook basic concepts of what they were experimenting with
I think its time for an exclusively Baum bat challenge. Take 3 Baum bats; 1 hot, keep 1 in a fridge until you are ready to swing it, and keep 1 in a freezer until you are ready to swing it. Then we will see if they are better the colder they get.
3:47 I think people were testing something slightly different when they concluded that. Essentially yes, its easier to swing (and thats big against live pitching especially) because its lighter, but you could also just get a lighter legal bat and have a similar effect. Although, there is probably a limit, could you get a drop 5 wood bat without corking? Maybe with a different wood? Idk. Would be interesting to try one if they exist
I'm not a bat maker but I am a carpenter and wood turner, and I make plenty of tool handles and wooden tools. while you could in essence use a lighter wood to drop weight, you will also have a significantly less durable bat. Hardwoods are used because they're dense, won't flex and more durable, as most of the lighter woods would crack/shatter much easier and flex, which would have all sorts of issues with both power and accuracy. On the same note, because I know there's gonna be someone who will bring it up, you can't use too hard of a wood either in this kind of application. The hardest woods aren't good at taking sudden concussive forces as they become brittle without enough give. The best compromise, if game legal, that I could come up with would be to build a composite blank wherein you basically do the same thing as the corking method but insert a solid dowel of a lighter wood before turning the bat.
Is it possible that the performance of the wood bat is due to the removal of weight or the hollow in the barrel created? I’d be interested in seeing what happens with a drilled out bat with no cork
I been addicted to watching these vids man I could watch a beautiful swing ripping baseballs all day. Id love to see a test of all the levels of louisville slugger wood bats, i have the $40 genuine one but it makes me wonder if theres an edge to the higher level louisville bats 🤔
You should test bats at diff deg of temp .. im sure you could find a way 2 cool the bats down .. and swinging a bat thats been frozen with liquid nit would be cool also
Hey baseball bat bros I got a string king metal 2 and that bat snapped in half after 3 days of bp I got a new one and it’s great it surprised me when i broke it
Will you have to try the original "composite" wood bat from mid-late 90s from Louisville Slugger. They were basically the C241, M110, and C271 shaved an extra 1/8th of an inch and then dipped in fiberglass. Does anyone remember those?
Would like to see a review of the Birdman bats lightweight training bat. I’m wondering if it’ll help me get accustomed to my Baum bat which feels light to me. It’s hard for me to get used to the feel
I’m only watching this video because it’s in my hometown team’s ballpark 😅. Lindquist Field is so beautiful man. Even though my Ogden Raptors had a serious championship hangover season this year.
I watch most all your videos. Quick question, where do you rank the 2024 Atlas BBCOR drop 3 against every BBCOR drop 3 pre 2025 for a 14 year old U league kid who’s hitting prowess is 70% contact (lots of contact) and 30% power? Love your channel. My son and I love trying to guess your exit speeds before it’s posted each AB. Looking forward to an answer. Thank you.
You should compare a solid birch bat to your corked bat to see if the two perform drastically different. Different types of wood can have very different characteristics so your comparison between a maple bat and the corked birch bat could be affected by this.
Hey I just realized something: why does American Batsmith have a drill press? With a perfect drill for this job? Sus! They’re making corked bats for MLBers? I’m onto the conspiracy now boy! 🤫

107 with wood in Crocs is crazy!
I came to the comment section to comment that exact same thing lol
Same same 😂
He didn't even have the speed straps engaged 🙂
@@TLRChadyes he did
We needed the $40 Louisville Slugger in this one. My sons die laughing every time it spoils everything.
I love that bat, my first one shattered on the first swing and then my 2nd one has over 10000 swings with no breaks
It’s a fan favorite for sure. 😂
Holy smokes Will! All of those 450 footers were just beautiful to watch! 😂
Watching you swing in Crocs is making my old ankles hurt.
I’m disappointed that the $40 Amazon special didn’t make an appearance … I feel like a new $40 special should be a requirement for EVERY wood bat video going forward 😂

Let us pray for the safety of table-saw-dude-bro's fingers. The width of a bat with no pusher is insane for me to comprehend.
Amen!!! Reading my mind right there!
Right? Holy shit that scared me.

I winced when I saw that.

Hah! With the crocs on bro! 😂
any wood bat comparison on the channel should include a $40 slugger js. great work keep it up
Put the Baum bat in the freezer and test the difference

The dude using the table saw has no concern for the safety of his own fingers lol
I cringed so hard watching that. Hopefully that was a saw stop to be using it that carelessly.
Your swing mechanics and strength have come so far since you started the channel-- seeing the progress has been dope :)
Now we need Baum bat vs Same Baum bat on ice for 30 minutes. Do it, do it now! 😂
Never get tired of seeing you crush baseballs. Keep on keeping on.
American Batsmith yet again... Good to see ya pal.

With the Baum bat gold enloaded and flared knob. Does it feel light or balenced. I bought the enloaded one I believe so idk.
I love watching your front foot fall out of your shoe on every swing😂 and still mashing the ball might I add
Have you treated the axe handle Baum bat yet?
I love the pitcher "freaking nuke!!!"
Two questions. 1. Do you still have that baum bat with the axe handle? 2. Will we see the icon vs select power showdown??
Try the old hickory black label. Hits the ball better than my end loaded Baum bat
