It's amazing that Lennon wrote that at the mere age of 25, though with what he'd been through it also makes sense. My personal favorite song of all time, just wonderfully crafted lyrically and instrumentally.

This album marked the beginning of their change in music from their earlier sound. Don't believe there has been a band who from beginning to end evolved more than The Beatles. They set the tone and the rest of the music industry evolved as they evolved.

Its great that younger people are listening to the Beatles. Modern music would not be it is now had it not been for the Beatles and others around that time. Too much of today's music is disposable and generic. Its aimed at short attention spans. The Beatles and others had a timeless quality and musicianship that had broad appeal. It has stood the test of time. They are still being talked about half a century later. Will today's music have that same quality? Will it stand the test of time? Time will tell..then too Tomorrow never knows...ahem✌

@@jamesanderson348 The Beatles weren't writing for the ages. They wrote because EMI demanded albums and singles at such and such a date. They just happened to be very, very good at it. They didn't know that they'd become what they did. It's too bad that the business of handling the income from their mass popularity tore them apart.

Dope never improved anyone or anything.
You are directly disrespecting the Beatles by falsely attributing their efforts and developing skills, to something negative, like drugs.
You should be ashamed of yourself! But you probably aren't, because you are doubtlessly a loser pothead.

    • @DUCKDUCKGOISMUCHBETTER
      @DUCKDUCKGOISMUCHBETTER 5 років тому +4

@The Beatles Precisely...because just look at all those wonderful, timeless rock albums that were recorded by the million potsmoking bums in the world who want everyone to start smoking dope and being a loser like them/sarc.
If you have talent...and just as importantly or more so, a relentless work ethic and a desire to hone your skills, as the Beatles did, drugs may slow you down, but they shouldn't completely ruin your skills, unless you do it to excess, but it won't make you one bit better either. It might change your excellent songs, into somewhat different excellent songs, but the underlying talent and work ethic is still your own.
Interesting point: No band ever broke up or fired anybody because they would NOT use drugs.
Nobody ever OD'd on "nothing". And nobody ever wrecked a car or drowned in a swimming pool or their own vomit because of "excessive sobriety."
And no old man ever said he wished he'd been MORE stupid and irresponsible and idiotic when he was younger.
But nobody ever learns from these basic undeniable truths.
I figured that out when I was a teenager, and while I'm far from "perfect", I have lived by it as best I can.
Im 51 and never took a single drink, or used illegal drugs even once. It hasn't killed me yet. And while I have some regrets, that decision is not among them.

    • @DUCKDUCKGOISMUCHBETTER

Nick, it is always wonderful to see young people like you to discover the great music of the past. While The Beatles were great songwriters right out the gate but with Rubber Soul they even rose the bar higher in that area. At his point with over a year of fame behind them they were starting to grow as young men and the songs has a more reflective vibe, they were just not writing songs to teenage girls. Rubber Soul was a major achievement for The Beatles. How do they follow it up, well with The Beatles follow it up with another classic. Wait until you get to Revolver. Great advances in the studio use. You have great observations on music. I am going to subscribe to your channel. Take Care Lawrence

The fact that the Beatles have arguably the greatest catalogue of all time and yet they were only together for 7 years... their music reaches everybody and positively affected so many generations. The way they make you reflect on yourself while spreading the message of peace and love... it's impossible to really quantify their contribution to the world and especially the music industry. When it comes to music, there was a period before the Beatles and after. Greatest band of all time without question.

Nowhere Man is one of my favorite John Lennon songs because he's being himself and he's wearing his heart on his sleeve with it. He's not pretending to be someone he's not. He's totally baring his soul with this song, like with the song "Help!" I like his more "experimental" songs too, but songs like this are the ones that personally grab me.

As a Beatles nerd myself, I would categorise The Beatles' albums in the following phases:
    1. Please Please Me, With The Beatles, Hard Day's Night = The Beatles early, catchy pop-rock, Beatlemania period.
    2. Beatles For Sale, Help!, Rubber Soul = The Beatles evolving their sound and songwriting. Their folk/Bob Dylan/marijuana period.
    3. Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour = The Beatles reaching their creative peak. Their psychedelic/experimental/LSD period.
    4. The White Album, Abbey Road, Let It Be = The Beatles late, bluesier, more eclectic period. You can hear The Beatles were becoming more fragmented and individualistic sonically.

As a 64 year old I can assure you that the words and wisdom of " In My Life" become VERY significant as you get older. Most places you return to, that is, what were your old haunts when you were young , are changed irrecoverably for ever. You are doing a good thing here, hopefully opening up peoples mind's to what came before, instead of just writing it off as "Beatles are good, but overrated" or something to that extent. However if you listened to their albums in chronological order then I think you would have reacted differently. You might have appreciated how much they grew between albums.
Norwegian Wood is an all time classic because it's the first to introduce the Sitar to the west. Many bands copied it afterwards. Rolling stones: Paint it Black comes to mind.
    Keep it up. White Album!

Good Stuff, it's interesting to see that you seem to respond a lot more to the later career work. Pet Sounds is a great album to follow up after Rubber Soul, but you will want to do the white album since the breadth and scope of it is really impressive. I wouldn't recommend delving deeper into the earlier albums unless you're really interested, I love the whole Beatles discography but the earlier stuff is not for everyone.
I really like the album reviews but there are some exceptional singles by the Beatles that aren't on any albums, or if they are, they're on things like "Yellow Submarine" which has most of the musical score from the movie which isn't.... as fun to listen to. You might want to consider doing their singles compilation (1, or Past masters) they're pretty good and will give you more of a flavour of their early stuff, but they still don't have some classics like "I am the Walrus" which is a must hear song.

Rubber Soul is a great album. It influenced Brian Wilson to write Pet Sounds. In turn, Pet Sounds influenced the Beatles with Sgt. Pepper. In My Life, If I Needed Someone, The Word, Nowhere Man and Im Looking Through You are my favorites from this Lp. However...There is also a United States version with Less songs and songs taken from the UK version of Help. These missing songs and songs from Help and Revolver wound up on Yesterday and Today. Confusing? I know. They had different marketing strategies here.

I like your reviews and style. Your comment that Rubber Soul was your "least favorite" of the Beatles albums you had listened to made me think a bit about your reviews in a different light (not in a bad way). Those of us that were concurrent with the British Invasion and the onslaught the Beatles were able to do two things: appreciate what the Beatles were producing as compared to their contemporaries, and be stunned by their maturation and growth. Album by album. Each release was step forward in sophistication. I am thinking that had you gone through their recordings in order of release, you might have arrived at Rubber Soul reaching a different conclusion. Glad you are enjoying them now.

Gotta get into the Grateful Dead man! They're pushing 50years of touring some of the most psychedelic crowds and jamming to some classic lyrics including covers and originals. They are currently known as Dead & Co as most of the originals are living and touring now!

I like how you started with (arguably) their best album and have progressed backwards....Im sure you can see the way they've evolved through time, and not a long time at that.

Rubber Soul was the Beatles' first album that was more than just a collection of singles. Before Rubber Soul, Rock 'n'Roll was a singles oriented music and Rock 'n'Roll albums were merely a collection of singles. Rubber Soul was the first real album oriented Rock 'n'Roll album ever.
Rubber Soul influenced the Beach Boys - who released Pet Sounds (the same year the Beatles released their follow up to Rubber Soul, Revolver). And Pet Sounds influenced the Beatles to come up with Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Thank you for your honest review. I like 10/14 of the songs on this album. I think their best album was Abbey Road. Every song except "Maxwells Silver Hammer" (the lyrics are good, though if you know what he's singing about) is outstanding.

Norwegian Wood is about smoking weed at a girls house whos his friend and then burning down her house or smoking a joint in it and leaving, The Beatles have so much to offer and teach about the heartbreak on both side. Nowhere man is about working hard and never giving up even if youre on your own and one day the music will come into motion. Drive My Car is funny as hell and Michelle is the most beautiful song, In My Life is close, can't beat that Piano Solo.
Ringo is hilarious (What Goes On) He was always picked on and you can hear it in the songs he leads on
Beatles Fest 2019! SHOUTOUT TO THE KID WHO WANTED TO HEAR RUN FOR YOUR LIFE AT THE FEST LAST YEAR!!!! (He was 5)

John's vocal phrasing on Nowhere Man is excellent...lagging behind the beat. Check out "Rain" for that style from John

You might like Norwegian Wood more in time. It's a fun one to try on guitar (tune up or capo one full tone).

You should react to Bob Dylan! Blood on the Tracks maybe or Blonde on Blonde. Or perhaps Highway 61 Revisited or Bringing It All Back Home. I personally love Nashville Skyline a lot too but it's not too representative. Or the album that got him big: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan!

Plastic ono band live in Toronto 1969 is great, has some more cooler heavier versions of some early era live beatles covers. Also a sick version of cold turkey, dunno bout yoko's stuff tho lol
