A friend of mine says that Huey also has an excellent blues/rock voice, right up there with the likes of Paul Rodgers and Bob Seger. You know what?, I agree!
The middle section until around 4:30 contains parts from Little Walter's 'Rollercoaster'. Just thought you should know, that song is one of the blues harp's most impressive achievements
from 3.32 - 4,25 very good interpretation of Little Walter´s " Roller Coaster" . All the good Blues Harp players stumbled over his songs or interpreted them or stuck to it there´s no way passing by Little Walter if you want to become a good player. Huey proves it . L.W. is the greatest blues harper of all times. RIP
Great jam! Smooth transitions, makes it look like second nature! Gotta love that, one day I will get to that lvl. One of the best harmonica players in the world. Soul in the music, that's what it's all about. It comes from within. Music you can feel, I had to watch this twice! Thanks for posting this.
Huey's no shrinking violet next to ANY of the world's greatest (or best known) harmonica players, he's got the tools. John Popper's work on "Live From The Fall" is mindblowing--one of the best I've ever heard in that it wasn't just standard blues/rock or folk harmonica patterns and vocals, which is what most players seem to aim for. Unique songs r also factor in greatness, and at time JP had that over evry other harp player...Huey definitely could gloat here if he wanted to though.
Never knew this about Huey, only the rather tame part from 1 song, which I wouldnt've dreamed was actually him anyway, but goddam he can seriously play with ANYONE! I wanna know if he ever contributed harp parts to others' albums.
@compbob2000 He is playing 3D' (3 draw 1st half-step bend--note that there are 3 distinct 3 draw bend notes available, each a 1/2 step down from the previous), then going quickly to the 2 draw (unbent), and back to 3D' (repeat this pattern).
I actually base a solo I do with my own band off this very number. Mine's nowhere near as elaborate or long, but we use it to segue into an old blues tune called Little Red Rooster.
This Concert is actually from New Years Eve in Tokyo in 1989 and there are a couple more Vids from it incuding a version of The Boys are back in Town, and there isn't the full version of New Drug but there is a Video of Mario Cipollina the Bass Player, doing a rather kick ass solo in the middle of it.
@marflemerfmarf No, it sounds similar because Spokey Dokey and this both use D harps and the blues scale. The songs are very different, and I say this as a person who plays harmonica.
I love how he almost slipped coming off the riser but kept it going. True showman, loved his concert at the Clay Center in WV on Thursday. Have some videos up on my channel if you would like to see. Working for a Livin' with a mandolin player on stage ,very interesting. Uhh Heart and Soul, New Drug, Small World. Check them out guys!
@mrmacharp Thanks, I didn't catch that. Tell me in your opinion is it necessary to have an E and F harp? I mean do you use those two keys oftern? Thanks.
Knew Huey was bad on harmonica but found a video earlier where he was playing a sax and I'm like, "Well, THAT figures"....as all into the Sax section he is while they're playing and he's not singing. I was pleasantly surprised....never saw him play one b4 that video. Cool and awesome.
@NickeyWhitfield I think he is playing two holes/notes and with the tong block one of these when sounds clean and bend the note, you follow me? I wish i helped you with this, greetings :)
Guys i am going to start playing harmonica!!! i am going to buy one but i dont know how much should i spent??? i need help !!!! S.O.S. i would appreciate it if you could HELP!!!
@jenhba , I never use an E harp, i play crossharp when i play, i do have a Low E harp that i around the house. i do suggest you get yourself an F harp, i use an F harp when the band is in C (crossharp). myself i like the Low F harps, i just dont like high notes, that's why i like the low keys :)
@gillbildobaggins , a green bullet mic is nice to own, but your technics should be the first thing. first a good acoustic sound, then you will have a sweet amplified sound.
Gosh, this man can play harmonica. Love it..Huey you rock man!!
I recently bought a harmonica. Before dying I want to play to play something like this.
This is terrific.
A friend of mine says that Huey also has an excellent blues/rock voice, right up there with the likes of Paul Rodgers and Bob Seger. You know what?, I agree!
I have been blown out by this piece. Not a note out of place. I can't stop listening. What a joy. Nice!!!!

Huey Lewis is so talented - a rocking great dance tune as well as an amazing display of what can be done with a harmonica!
cool - this man plays little walter stuff! Rollercoaster....great!!!! And big respect!
One of the best all round talented bands I've seen.
Almost falls down stairs around 4:22 and walks it off like a badass.
The middle section until around 4:30 contains parts from Little Walter's 'Rollercoaster'. Just thought you should know, that song is one of the blues harp's most impressive achievements

Great jam! Smooth transitions, makes it look like second nature! Gotta love that, one day I will get to that lvl. One of the best harmonica players in the world. Soul in the music, that's what it's all about. It comes from within. Music you can feel, I had to watch this twice! Thanks for posting this.
Really great bit performance. Holy smokes that ending was intense.

So cool how you can watch Huey and on the side you get links to Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee Hooker, and Charlie Musslewhite.

That was awesome..!
CRAZY!!! LOVE IT!!!!
Never knew this about Huey, only the rather tame part from 1 song, which I wouldnt've dreamed was actually him anyway, but goddam he can seriously play with ANYONE! I wanna know if he ever contributed harp parts to others' albums.
solo .. slow ... flow to my heart
Amazing.
His neck is going mad! He almost falls off the stairs and doesn't even miss a beat!
That man can play
@compbob2000 He is playing 3D' (3 draw 1st half-step bend--note that there are 3 distinct 3 draw bend notes available, each a 1/2 step down from the previous), then going quickly to the 2 draw (unbent), and back to 3D' (repeat this pattern).
This is cool. I here licks from lots of different things here. I can hear both Spokey Dokey, Juke, and Steven Tyler in this solo.
Fuckkkinnnnn Huey Lewis mannn! This is a true musician right here. Mad props! -3
Thank you, added to a playlist...
Incredible.. wow 0.0
@compbob2000 - He is playing the 4 draw bend and the 3 draw. The tab would be: 4d', 3d, 4d', 3d, 4d', 3d.
This band is still one of my favorites!
Thans for your comment
3:40 best sound of harmonica
Every time I hear a harmonica solo I think Cowboy Bebop

Just a f***ing master...
@mrmacharp Is Huey playing a Marine Band? Thanks in advance.
@marflemerfmarf No, it sounds similar because Spokey Dokey and this both use D harps and the blues scale. The songs are very different, and I say this as a person who plays harmonica.
How... how does he do this???
Does he have like 2 harmonica's in his hand?
I don't understand :O
I love how he almost slipped coming off the riser but kept it going. True showman, loved his concert at the Clay Center in WV on Thursday. Have some videos up on my channel if you would like to see. Working for a Livin' with a mandolin player on stage ,very interesting. Uhh Heart and Soul, New Drug, Small World. Check them out guys!
@mrmacharp I just noticed, did he switch harps at 1:23 of this video and if so what key did he switch too. Thanks.
@mrmacharp Thanks, I didn't catch that. Tell me in your opinion is it necessary to have an E and F harp? I mean do you use those two keys oftern? Thanks.
@mrmacharp I don't care for the High harps either but was wondering. Thanks for your response.
Knew Huey was bad on harmonica but found a video earlier where he was playing a sax and I'm like, "Well, THAT figures"....as all into the Sax section he is while they're playing and he's not singing. I was pleasantly surprised....never saw him play one b4 that video. Cool and awesome.

@gillbildobaggins , a green bullet mic is nice to own, but your technics should be the first thing. first a good acoustic sound, then you will have a sweet amplified sound.
@al3xb777
I wonder if his solo is double-tracked or something? But I know for sure anyone can blow at least two notes at once.
All ya gotta do is sell your sole to the devil and you can play like this.. haha..go Huey!! Bust a Reed
sounds like a electric guitar
hand held or racked up, there be a differance
