    About your smoked motor: A bad ESC will kill a motor real quick. I have had brand new motors burn up instantly when I replaced a burned out one with a new one, only to discover the ESC was the problem. ESC's have a collection of mosfets on them, which are inclined to fail "shorted", so a good way to check your ESC's before replacing a burned motor is to remove your motor leads, and check between the esc output terminals for continuity. 1-2, 2-3, 1-3. if you have continuity on any of those, then your new motor will be destroyed the moment you power up.

    I am an electrical tech by trade. If the XT30 is limiting current flow, it absolutely makes sense that it is not sagging the battery voltage as badly. So it makes sense to me that an XT60 could help flow more current and possibly make more power rated in watts (amperage x voltage) and make the craft faster.

      Same battery 4s from 5 inch is more efficient on 4 inch 1507 motor then 2206
      but 2206. perhaps 18xx for the 5 inch prop on light frame.
      As a newbie I dont understand why 4" is almost totally disregarded from these hobby... Am I missing something?
      There should be 3rd class for people like to fly it like an airplane. Efficient, long distance and light. I rather add 50 grams of battery to my drone then carbon / titanium reinforcements. I am not planning to crash flying 10M+ above tree lines.

    • @AndyRCchannel
      @AndyRCchannel  5 років тому +1

      If you are refering to how the antennas are mounted then yes I have and it would be reflected in more amp draw if it was a factor. when the copter is in forward motion like that its almost vertical. the props are blocking any drag caused by the antennas. Its brute force which is needed and considering the diatone sagged much less than the skyzone Id say thats some good evidence.

    It would be interesting to see if there was a difference with an xt60. There was some comments from people on UAVs review saying there is a substantial bottleneck in power of you or an xt30.

    • @AndyRCchannel
      @AndyRCchannel  5 років тому

      the Xt30 is capable of 87 amps. the battery used is 850mah X 95C = 80 A. If its a bottle neck why did it not sag to 11v like the one that did 112mph?

    • @JonathanHeavyside
      @JonathanHeavyside 5 років тому

      @@AndyRCchannel I said the same as you although I never had the full details of how many amps an xt30 is actually capable of. What gauge wire is on the xt30 connector? Is it a lower gauge? Although wouldn;t logic suggest that you will get battery sag when the amps are pulling at their highest. If you are not getting sag you are not pulling enough amps to get the sag?

    • @AndyRCchannel
      @AndyRCchannel  5 років тому +1

      @@JonathanHeavyside well not really, the guage wire is designed for an XT30 so adding an Xt60 should then bottle neck at the guage wire. its also important to note in the test where an XT60 was used, the battery used was an infinity 70C 850mah so 850mah x 70 = 59 amps which is within the tolerance of an xt30 and under the tollerance of an XT60. the battery I used is 95c which would make it 80.2 amps however I have measured it on an accurate current meter pulling 87 amps. From my experience extreme voltage sag and also shown in this video extreme voltage sag is caused by the battery not being able to deliver enough amps that it needs so the copter takes more than it can handle and drops to 11 volts. no voltage sag in all of my speed tests has resulted in there not being enough demand for more current.

      From Amass XT30 data sheet XT30 connectors are supposed for constant 15A current with 30A bursts (2-3 sec).
      www.china-amass.com/product/contain/Ydir1N5452923M63
      For battery used in Andy's tests 80C current is 68A which is double of allowed. If current reading in DVR video is approximately correct then current draw was nearly 3 times exceeded. Instant melting current of conductors inside connector is around 100A so you can reach this near-melting current draw by cost of voltage sag because of temperature induced increased resistance. Also this current draw will destroy both quad and battery connectors very soon. If you wish to fly fast, change connector to XT60 - it is only a gram heavier, will not fry and battery will sag less.

    I'm looking to maiden mine tomorrow!! Pumped! Side question, could/would your PID tune affect top speed?
    Also, in order for telemetry to work with the RXSR the wire at the pin connector will not work for this stack. You need to solder onto the opposite-inverted pad on the RXSR for telemetry to register. So unfortunately it is not plug an play capable. I suppose there is another way to use the PPM signal however it is more complicated.

    • @AndyRCchannel
      @AndyRCchannel  5 років тому +1

      That is correct but surely they could solder the wire for you? or have another inverted pad? I mean they have the buzzer wire there for you if u want it. The pid tune does not affect top speed. I got oscilations with the stock tune and it still hit 104mph. I imagine an unflyable pid tune would have an effect.

    • @340havoc
      @340havoc 5 років тому

      @@AndyRCchannelthanks for the info about the tune. I really wasn't sure.
      As for the telemetry pad, I'm not sure how it all works, or why you can't use the wire in the receiver's connector as is. I only know that with the mamba stacks in order to get telemetry to work you're going to need to solder directly to the receiver. With that being the case, there's no way to make it PNP.
      My GT2.5M was the same way. My goal was to say that telemetry is possible on this quad, but you've gotta solder to get it.
      Regardless of all that, truly... great review!

    • @amisoftau2659
      @amisoftau2659 5 років тому +1

      The problem is that frsky telemetry (sport) is an inverted protocol the same as sbus. F4 processors don't have invertible serial ports built in, so the F4 FC designers usually add an external inverter to one of the serial ports (RX pin) - for Sbus. The telemetry though is sent from the FC TO the control RX (e.g. to RXSR) so needs an inverted TX pin on an additional FC serial port. Most F4 FC designers don't provide support for an additional invertable TX pin, and usually not for ANY invertible TX pin anyway. So as you said, the usual solution is to tap into an non-inverted telemetry input on the receiver - if there is one.
      The other solution, is to use soft-serial. This is a virtual serial port, emulated in software (FC firmware). Soft-serial serial ports DO provide the ability to run inverted, so pose no problem for inverted protocols such as sbus and sport. Note that soft-serial is not fast enough on F4 for a reliable control link (e.g. sbus). Max soft-serial speed is 57600baud. But it can do sport (which is unfortunately locked at 57600). You do need to have all soft-serial ports running at the same speed btw. It will cause additional cpu load, so that you'd probably want to cut from 8k/8k back to 4k/4k. I'm fine with that, probably can't feel the difference :).
      Setting up soft-serial is not trivial, but also not difficult once you get the hang of it. In the CLI use the resource command. The idea is to reallocate unused CPU input and output pins that are available on the FC pads. Pins such as motor5, motor6, led output, buzzer, current sense, voltage sense, rssi input, etc etc.
      As an example, I have a wiring plan for the Tyro79 FC (has 2 hardware serial ports + USB), creating two soft-serial ports (using motor5, motor6, current and rssi), allowing all of Sbus, smart-audio, telemetry and GPS. Not tested yet.

    I got a gtM3 frame and put a hglrc F440 stack with BH avenger 1507 4100kv motors with the HQ VS1 props. It is way too fast for my skill level, but it's a blast to fly and the frame is very durable. I have an XT60 on my quad. I think it may actually make a significant difference. Next build will be using 1606 4000kv emax motors. I'm sure it'll rip even more than my last build. However, my favorite micro frame is the catalyst Machine works more massive drone. That sucker is insane with the avenger motors!

    • @AndyRCchannel
      @AndyRCchannel  5 років тому

      If the battery had sagged like the S140 did then I would say an xt30 would be the reason but it didnt. It suggests that is not the issue. If it can cope with less sag on an xt30 then I dont think an xt60 is gonna add anything other than weight but I will try regardless. IMO you kinda need to change the cable as well as the XT60 because if the connector size is bigger than the gauge wire its still a bottleneck via the wire. Also as I mentioned In other video iv seen xt30s cope with 87 amps. The 4s battery here is 850mah 95c. 95X 850 = 80amp. So its within the tolerance of the xt30

    I don't think replacing the xt30 would help, as you would see a large voltage drop if xt30 was too small. Probably motors real kv is a bit lower like 3800 or so, that would also explain the low current draw.

    RE: racing - The efficiency just isn't there. 3" freestyle is ok for flight times but when you want to wring the speed out of them the flight time drops fast. Jessika Droneheart did ok on a 4" flexrc ascent last year. My 6s rigs are definitely getting better efficiency and the acceleration on my lightweight 2205 and my high power 2208 rigs is definitely higher. I reckon *I* would probably do better racing a 3" over a 5" but I'm rubbish and I wouldn't be ragging it as hard as the better racers do. The level of throttle they flight at is insane, if you watch their vids the voltage just plummets then sticks at the bottom of the sag for the entire race. No doubt 3" is the fastest top speed unless you are doing something special on 5" though.

    • @AndyRCchannel
      @AndyRCchannel  5 років тому

      iv found that not to be the case. In these speed runs with 6S and 4S the battery is done in 2 mins. 3 inch goes for 3 mins and up to 5 mins taking it slow.

    • @frasersteen
      @frasersteen 5 років тому

      @@AndyRCchannel Maybe but that could be indicative of a higher power output at high speed rather than the rest of the time. For example a 5" has a x-sectional area of 4 and a 3" of 1 you'd expect the 5" to require more power at the top end but at some point below that reynolds numbers come into play much more.

      Yes but we had 30 deg c last summer yet in 3c it produced identical reaults proving that tempreature is not affecting the speed of a quadcopter unlike it does in golf. I think because a golf ball is aerodynamic for one and does not have a constant power source. I also believe with quadcopters they can only reach a certain speed before the rotors start to act as breaks from the drag. This is also true of helicopters which is why even the fastest full scale helicopters struggle to break 200mph

    • @rcrdps8144

      So are you saying the skyzone only hits top speed once, but "normal" copters are consistent? You hit 104 five times in this video. Looked to be around 80 amps on the speed runs. At first I thought your comment about xt30 vs 60 was rubbish, but now that I see it's 80 amps,.....wow!
