Speaking of gangster Marines...one can't not mention Gen. Smedley Butler. A man who not only also earned two medals of honor (also fought during the Boxer rebellion), but after he retired, he was approached by a group of business men who actually wanted to overthrow the government (See, The Business Plot) but Gen. Butler, the baller that he was, refused to use his pull with the military and blew the whistle on those traitors...he then went on to call out how corrupt the military and government was, famously stating, "Al Capone could learn a lot from me, he could only operate in three counties, I operated on three CONTINENTS." (From his book, War is a Racket).

      @QuixoteBadger 10 місяців тому +28

Exactly! The Navy's response would have been to obliterate it from shore.
As an example, during the Korean war, one of our battleships was providing artillery support to the ground forces inland when they got hit by a North Korean gun battery. Their response was to turn all three main gun batteries on them and drop all nine loaded death raviolis directly on their heads.

To give you an idea of how difficult the Medal of Honor is to earn: out of the roughly 250 years of the US, 3,535 have been awarded as of now (according to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society), and to compare the next highest award (Distinguished Service Cross) has been awarded 13,462 times as of 2018 (couldn't find more recent numbers). Of those, 19 were double recipients and (to my surprise) only 18.5% [~654] of them were awarded posthumously [warrior died in the action that resulted in them getting the award]. It is awarded to those "for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty" which is how every citation is started.
A few other fun facts, there are currently 65 living recipients, and never refer to someone who has the MOH as a "Winner" of the award. They view such as description as if it was a medal received from a race. Instead, they prefer to be called "recipients" as they received the award. An interview with a Marine that received the MOH once said that he hates wearing the award, because he views his actions as nothing heroic, but rather as part of his job. The only reason he wears it is in honor of the four other Marines that died covering him as he preformed the action that resulted in his receiving the award (iirc, in summary: he cleared out four Japanese pillboxes using a flamethrower while under extremely heavy fire after the previous weapon operator was killed).

23:30 An example of the Medal of Honor behavior is Dakota Meyer, who, when he was being shot at on three sides, ran through it five times to save others.
If someone can perform actions worthy of the Metal of Honor more than once, they should be given more than one.
If someone defies their CO in order to save lives as well, they should not be disqualified from receiving medals. I say this because my Grandfather defied his CO's order to fall back and leave a wounded Marine to carry his friend to safety in Vietnam. Got shot twice in the back but kept moving. He got his ass chewed and would have faced disciplinary actions if not for the fact the CO was a fuck up.

On the subject of devil dogs protecting banks, there was a time where the non-retired ones were protecting mail from gangsters.
The FAQ section of the Mail Guards' training manual tells you everything you need to know about how Marines would respond to this robbery problem, once the gangster tried to break in:
"Q. Suppose he [the robber] is using a gun or making threats with a gun in trying to escape? A. Shoot him.
    Q. Suppose the thief was apparently unarmed but was running away?
    A. Call halt twice at the top of your voice, and if he does not halt, fire one warning shot; and if he does not obey this, shoot to hit him.
    Q. Is it permissible to take off my pistol while on duty; for instance, when in a mail car riding between stations?
    A. Never take off your pistol while on duty. Keep it loaded, locked, and cocked while on duty.
    Q. Is there a general plan for meeting a robbery?
    A. Yes; start shooting and meet developments as they arise thereafter.
    Q. If I hear the command 'Hands Up,' am I justified in obeying this order?
    A. No; fall to the ground and start shooting.
    Q. Is it possible to make a successful mail robbery?
    A. Only over a dead Marine."

    • @chrismaverick9828

I've worked with two marines and yes, they teach a LOT about The Corps' history in boot. Daly and Puller are key among them, not for their heroism (which is epic), but because they represent the leadership, community, and fighting spirit The Corps is based around. When you are soaked to the bone in a muddy foxhole in torrential rain, fifteen hours after eating your last ration, and you either advance into the face of fire and likely die, or retreat into embarrassment, the Marine has several figures to really guide their compass.... And none of those guys gave up or gave a flip about the odds. They just fought their way through or died trying.
Marines are a fanatical cult of sorts, but one I'd rather have on my side than to see on the other. Duty, Honor, Country. There are a lot worse things to give one's life for in this world.

It's awarded for courage under fire and acting above and beyond the call of duty.
Cpl Kyle Carpenter (also a Marine) jumping on a grenade to save his battle buddies in Afghanistan is a good example of one of the very few living Medal of Honor Recipients.

There were definitely some who deserved it but many really didn't fit into the current requirements of the medal. That's not really all that much of an issue except for statistics. Daly deserved that third and I think it's B-S that they came up with that law to limit to one. Seriously, a recognition of being a double or triple badd-ass only helps cement the military as a whole in terms of who not to F- with when outsiders look at it.

I believe the official reasoning for the limiting of the Medal of Honor to 1 per Serviceman was to preserve the prestige of the award. There was, I believe, genuine worry that if the award could continue to be awarded multiple times, it would dilute its significance, not because it was too easy to achieve, but because if you've already proven that you possess the uncommon valor required to earn the highest possible military award, then the award marks you as someone with that quality of character, and any further ones would be redundant. So they solidified it as a literal once-in-a-lifetime award that ushered you into a brotherhood of valorous souls, rather than as something you could 'collect' and brag about how many you have, like you could with all other awards.
Do I necessarily agree with that line of thought? Eh... maybe. Considering the vast majority were only ever awarded one anyways, and it only really affected Dan Daly himself, I see the logic in the reasoning. But as a Marine, I'm also a little miffed that the Corps was denied the bragging rights of having the only Medal of Honor Hat Trick in history :P

Dan Daly was in fact nominated for 4 MOH's.

According to goggle. It was the Three Gorges Dam, the biggest dam ever constructed up to this point. The water it stored was so much, it increased the total length of a day on Earth by 0.06 microseconds. It also made the Earth slightly more round in the middle and flat on the poles.

It's also why, if the Marines get deployed somewhere that America isn't actively at war with, that war is about to be declared, because they are about to start it.

Some interesting insight into Marine culture. When a non-marine DD's (Devil Dogs) a Marine, it is a complement and it is taken as one. When a Marine DD's another marine, it has a different context - You dun fucked up. To have a GyGgt or 1stSgt DD a lower enlisted mean they are about to get chewed out, possibly at high volume and have unfortunate results. "Hey there Devil Dog..." or "Devil Dog, have you lost your damn mind?" are not words you want addressed to you. Between marine of same rank, it's used more a verbal smack to the side of the head - an attention grabber. DD's *never* does up in ranks unless you want your future to be unpleasant.

The 3 gorges dam and more importantly the enormous amount of water being held behind it slowed down the earth's rotation slightly because it is significantly above sea level, so it forming moved an enormous amount of mass further away from the center of the earth.
