  • For this second study I wanted to try for something less obliquely "ominous" (although I'm not sure I necessarily achieved that). Early in the process of putting the patch together, the combination of the pulsing bass running into the delay along with the fading, distant noise put me in mind of a submarine's sonar and the waves of the sea, which provided the inspiration for the rest of the piece.
The occasional, glitchy arpeggios come from slowly modulating the delay time with the delay in tempo synced mode which results in harmonically related pitch shifts as the delay buffer gets squashed and stretched by simple factors. Although it's not immediately obvious in how this patch came out, this patch also helped me further understand how you could have the sequencer act in a more "conventional" manner - it's probably missing the point of the instrument a little, but I've long held that the intentional misuse of an instrument is how you get to know it in more depth so I'll see where those experiments bring me!
This time, reverb is provided by the lovely GFI System Specular Reverb in its default mode.

Transparency notice: the Elmyra2 was kindly provided to me by Neutral Labs for free for the purposes of making videos on it. No editorial oversight has been provided to Neutral Labs and no other payment has been received. As always I'm only interested in featuring instruments that I'm genuinely excited about on the channel.

Never mind the intentional misuse. I designed this machine and would never have been able to come up with anything close to that patch. Super impressed. :)

Why you don't have a million subscribers is a mystery to me. Your music and other content are some of the best out there.

If you haven't checked it out, a lot of: oscillatorsink.bandcamp.com/album/one-month-of-january is pretty droneful like this one. I didn't have the Elmyra at the time of recording it, but it certainly would have been featured if I had!

Interesting study, dude! I think half of what we do with drone instruments is intentional, and the other half is alchemy, witchcraft, black art, happy accident or just casual magic. Like, I'll go into a patch with some intent on the destination, but the path, oh the path meanders and twists and turns, and I have no idea what's around the next bend. Kinda like, setting a distant hill as the end goal but the route is obscured and only revealed in small chunks as you solidly put one foot in front of the other.

Same comment as for study 1, minus the shimmer. Another beautifully suited reverb though

The GFI Specular is a lovely sounding reverb - it was on my guitar pedal board for about 8 years (but recently got edged out by a Ventris because I wanted to try something different).

Beautiful track. I am intrigued by this Elmyra 2 but impossible to find in Europe 🤔

    • @OscillatorSink

Thank you! The Elmyra2 is great - Elevator Sound have one in stock and they ship within the EU, but if you want to find one nearer, it would be worth contacting Neutral Labs to see when the next batch is going out to dealers.

@@OscillatorSink Thank you very much for the info. I will ask to Neutral Labs. Elevator Sound is in UK, so it mean custom taxes :-( But if I don't find another solution, perhaps I will buy from them.

@@noiseentropy Elevator have a location in Spain now, so as long as you order from the EU branch (you can select it on their website) I think you'll be OK. Best to check with them perhaps though.

Wish Neutral Labs had not taken the original Elmyra out of production when they introduced this mk2 version. The original mk1 Elmyra is a thing of simple beauty with a great sound.
I built one for a friend... with always intention to build a kit for myself at some point.
But in meantime is become folded.. unavailable... and the mk2 version is not as appealing at all...
