- One thing I was wondering for a long time when creating my office setups and buying a bunch of laptops were if it works to run 144Hz monitors with USB C. That would enable a lot more high refresh rate options. in this video i show you what you need and what settings to apply to make it work.
MAN! You are a life saver! I just bought that same type of usb c to dp cable and have been trying to get the refresh rate to improve from 60hz to 165hz when connected to gaming monitor that both laptop and monitor can produce. I was missing one crucial step....switching from duplicate to extended
that's great! :D
I don't lnow how yo express my gratitude because i've been searching for solutions fpr months, cheers mate 🍻🌸
Thanks so much, for the longest time I stuck to the idea of getting a USB-C to HDMI to get a higher refresh rate on my monitor but this completely changed my view since my monitor does have a DP that I was neglecting for the longest time.
Glad I could help!
@@w2best Update: It didn't really work so I decided to get a USB-HDMI which is working. It's not the best, but it's also not the worst. Thank you though.
@@kaine880 the DP didn't work? Interesting, it should be possible with that port
@@w2best Sadly I only have a single HDMI Port on my laptop and no DP.
Was waiting for another video from you! Helpful video.
Have been working like crazy on my other business, but there will be more coming out here during the fall :)
@@w2best Looking forward to it. Best of luck on both endeavors!
Try not to help spread the confusion regarding what USB-C is please. USB-C has NOTHING AT ALL to do with the type or amount (bandwidth) of data that can pass through the connector. When you hear or read the term "USB-C or USB Type-C" this only refers to the shape of the connector. Similarly USB Type-A is the larger boxy traditional form of USB but it comes in the flavors of USB3, USB3.1, USB3.2, and USB4. Just keep you informed, the USB Type-C shaped connector can pass all of those technologies through it, including Thunderbolt. But once again, Type-c is just the shape of the connector.
If thunderbolt can already output to 240hz why ppl still use hdmi, why dont we just thunderbolt wehenerv possible with adapters?
I have Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor and Asus tuf gaming laptop why can't I get 240hz but only 60hz? I used 6 HDMI cables then tried HDMI to dp converter it didn't work should I get this cable from the video? Or should I get adapter?@@renegade5942
You always do such great educational videos:)
Thank you!! Tutorials is def becoming more of my thing.
This is quite helpful....I'm currently running my laptop on my Sim Racing rig and looking to upgrade my Sony Bravia TV to a proper Ultra Wide Screen 49" and mount it to my rig...However I was told that DP is better than HMDI but I don't have DP on my laptop....only HDMI and USB C! So I will hopefully go ahead with this approach! Thanks!
Glad I could help!
@@w2bestcan I just use type c and get the 240hz?
Displayport No Signal. Asus ROG Swift PG279Q - Lenovo Legion Pro 7i rtx 4080 / i9 13900hx, used USB-C to Displayport 8k Cable.
Gonna try to do this. I have 3 monitors now, and my top one is 100 HZ stuck at 60 because of the USBC to HDMI that I have and i want to use it at max potential
Update: Laptop doesnt have thunderbolt 4
Your videos are really nice
Thank you!! :)
its been 4 years since i get my laptop this the long time answer for my laptop
That's good!
i have laptop asus tuf gaming f17 fx706hc. I connected a Benq Zowie xl2411k monitor to it via a USB-C display port cable, everything is fine, only the monitor turns off every 30 minutes, maybe more or less often for a few seconds and turns back on. Before that I used to connect the monitor via an HDMI cable and there was no such problem
That's too bad, I don't have any input on that issue.
Great work thank you! If I may ask advice, could you suggest cable maker brands to look for if I need to run two monitors of 4k at 120 hz. Screens only have hdmi inputs, outputs are one Display port, another Usbc. It’s difficult to orient on cables market as a newbie :) was happy to find your video as many claim that Mac can only maintain 60hz max on external monitors.
Not that I know of. I used a no name cable!
Great video.. I was hoping you could cover clamshell mode case: Does the MBP still output 144Hz when the lid is closed. I find that the refresh rate reverts to 60Hz when close the lid. I'm connecting using a cabletime Thunderbolt 4 cable - USB C to USB C from the MBP M2Pro to the M28U.
Interesting. I haven't tried. That seems pretty weird to me. And you can't change it in settings?
@@w2best Thanks for the reply. Yes figured it out. I had to toggle Type C compatibility to off. I can set it to 144Hz now.
Thanks So much 🎉❤❤
Lol the only video that helped me. Thanks a lot.😅
That's great! So happy to help!
i did not completely inserted the cable, all cool now. thank you.
stupid me...
We have a good portable gaming monitor with a resolution of 2560x1440 and a refresh rate of up to 165Hz. Can you help us make an unboxing video or scene usage video?
What is the size? It sounds like a product I would be very keen to try.
@@w2best 17.3-inch portable gaming monitor and 11.6-inch portable dual-screen monitor. You can check out the video I posted. If you are interested, we can provide a sample to you.
I'm using a Thunderbolt 3 dock. Anker with my laptop thunderbolt 3 and a monitor 144 hz. The problem now is that the monitor and dock are far away now and the cae is too short. Need at least 8 ft. I'm using cable matters 3.3 ft. Any cable recommendations? I had two extra 3ft extensions, but they are 60hz support.
You need a usb c or displayport cable. No extension or adapter
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Helpful thanks
Glad to be able to help!! :)
I’m using a USB-C to HMDI adaptor from my laptop to 165Hz monitor. The connection works fine, however the display on the laptop is way laggier and the fps is nowhere compared to the fps displayed on the laptop. I have tried using different resolutions but nothing seems to be working. Any advice?
Hey I have a omen 16 with type c thunderbolt port...
I have purchased a lenovo legion monitor which has a Displayport support...the monitor came with a dp cable full size both ....how can I connect? Please reply
Which brand do you recommend? I see amazon has many brands i've never heard of?
I have a no name - works fine!
I have mac m2 air , and lg27gl850 2k 144hz monitor which version sould i use to get full resolution
1.2 version or 1.4 version on cable
Do we need a 144hz monitor?
Do we need anything? I mean 60hz is usually fine in most cases, but smooth is sometimes nice.
In a few days I'll be getting a Minisforum UM 790 Pro. This has 2 USB 4.0 ports,
at least 1 of which is a Thunderbolt. And I should be able to connect my iiyama 34-inch QHD display to it.
Unfortunately I haven't found a suitable cable yet.
What exactly should I be looking for?
Thanks
Does it have usb c in? Then use usb c to usb c. Otherwise usb c to DisplayPort.
hello and thank you for this video, I have a usb c (thunderbolt 4) and mini dp on my laptop, I want to use an external monitor with higher refresh rate so should I use the usb c or the mini dp ? thank you again
You can use either!
With this cable can I get power from the monitor?
no, you can never get cable with displayport to usb c, only with usb c to usb c.
For m1 pro. Can I connect 2 external display with high refresh rate via 2 thunderbolt 4 to display port cables connecting 2 monitors to the Mac?
I believe this works but I actually don't have the means to test. 🥲
If my laptop only supports 60hz, can it be 144hz when connected to a monitor? for example, the monitor also supports 144hz.
If it has USB C with displayport it always supports 144hz, that's the standard of the port :)
@@w2bestcan charging too? cuz i have just one port type c support display port
how do i know if my usb c is display port enabled?
It's usually in your specs. Most are but some are only for data and power.
Is it possible to boot into bios using an external monitor with usb-c?
It should be! It's a displayport
was your laptop originally 144 hz?
The Mac is 120 😊
So usb type c or dp port can habdle 240hz monitor right
Should be all good! 👍👍
Hello, I did everything you mentioned, it automatically set the image to 144 Hz, but every time I turn on the laptop, the image does not automatically appear, so I have to unplug and plug the cable. I wonder what is the reason for this?
That I don't know about actually!
Hi!! I have an urgent question! Would you recommend Lenovo Ideapad 5 Ryzen 7 with 16 GB RAM or Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 ryzen 5 8 GB RAM? Both 14"
I love Yoga Slim 7 so I would pick that.
I have lenevo slim 5i laptop. no thunderbolt, but have display port 1.4 and its 60hz screen. I have a monitor which can run 4k @144hz . Can i use display port of my laptop to my monitor and will it run 4k @144hz
I doubt you can do 4k 144hz. But try and see how it goes. You can def do uhd 144hz.
I want to buy a mac Studio and my Display which is from Asus has 240hz on 2560x1440 is that working with that cable?
If it has displayport in that should work well.
Will this work via hdmi to desplay cable? Could i get 240hz on a monitor with that aet up?
you could if you have a 240hz monitoer
Then you need a very modern hdmi version. Most wouldn't do it.
Hello, I have a laptop medion erazer X30 and I just bought a screen 27" 144hz full HD.
I bought as well câble USB c to displayport but it isnt working when I connect both, do you know why and how to solve it ?
U sure u bought the right cable?
Yeah I did, I tried two but anyway; it's seems that my laptop even with 3070ti is not handling g-synch therefore I stay in HDMI@@jos02
does it support 240hz?
You mean if the Mac does?
my laptop's usbc has Display port 1.4, can my laptop accept audio/video input over this port or does it only support audio/video output?
It's an output
@@w2best but since usbc is a bidirectional port shouldn't display port over usbc also be bidirectional?
Of course you can use USB for data transfer and all it's capabilities. But that's for data transfer. Displayport is an output.
