i had books for several factions but mostly played chaos and lizardmen. i still have my old fantasy books but most of the figures were lost in a move. at the time i was so crushed by the loss i stopped playing. would it be possible to use the current figure range to build an army? i imagine the problem wont just be finding figures to represent what i need but now being designed for round bases and loose formation getting them to fit into close formation will be a problem.
Depends on what game you want to play. Most of the current models are designed for age of sigmar, but some can be used for rank & file builds. The warriors in this video are the older models from the old 'slaves to darkness' box and are based on 25mmx25mm square bases. These can still be bought (new), just as a seperate box of 16 warriors.

I did use metallic paints, all of them from vallejo. Gunmetal blue for the blue-ish armour, and black metal + gunmetal for the other metal parts. Some hightlights were done with alluminum.
hmm, i see a lot of people do element-ish chaos warriors. My own chaos warriors has more medieval-accurate metal armor, with gold trim and different coloured capes. But then again, my leader has a fire-pattern cape, and the banner is flames with a chaos symbol on, so i guess there just is something with chaos warriors and elements....
These are the plastic chaos warriors made by games workshop. They come in boxes of 16. I also got some warriors from the old start collecting box (slaves to darkness).
This is the rough guideline I use for the blue armor; 1. Gunmetal blue + black (1/1 mix) 2. Mix from step 1 + gunmetal blue (1/1) 3. Gunmetal blue + gunmetal (1/1 drybrush) 4. Mix from step 3 + gunmetal (1/1 drybrush) 5. Drakenhof nightshade 6. Nuln oil (deepest shadows, use sparingly) 7. Drybrush with mix from step 3 The non-blue armour is done in the same way, just replace the gunmetal blue with a dark metallic paint, and skip the drakenhof nightshade. All paints are from vallejo, except for the washes (citadel).
