- Katie Hargreaves goes deerstalking with Paul Childerley. What's unusual is that Katie is a vegan. She sees sustainable hunting as part of her veganism.
Paul and Katie are out after Chinese water deer in Bedfordshire. Katie is also a wildlife artist, drawing her inspiration from deer and other animals.

Why shoot deer?
There are more than two million red, roe, fallow, sika, muntjac and Chinese water deer in Britain’s countryside and semi-urban areas, the highest level for 1,000 years. Numbers have doubled since 1999, according to the Deer Initiative, the UK government’s deer agency.
Deer are an attractive and an important part of our wildlife. However, they have no natural predator in the UK so numbers must be sensibly and strategically managed to keep them in balance with their habitat and to prevent damage to crops, trees, woodland flora, gardens and other wildlife.
Deer cause £4.5 million-worth (Forestry Commission Scotland) of damage to plantations and other commercial woodlands in Scotland. Crop damage is estimated at £4.3m a year according to DEFRA, with the greatest damage on cereal crops in east and south-west England.
More than 8,000 hectares (Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology) of woodland with SSI status is currently in ‘unfavourable’ or ‘recovering’ condition due to deer impacts such as browsing and fraying. Deer can also influence the variety of wildlife in woodlands and other habitats by altering structural and plant species diversity. According to the University of East Anglia’s Dr Paul Dolman, that has resulted in a 50% decline in woodland bird numbers where deer are present, impacting particularly on nightingales, blackcaps, chiffchaffs and warblers.
Deer are susceptible to Bovine TB and may be responsible for the transmission of TB to cattle. They are also the likely driver behind the UK’s increasing tick population (Scharlemann et al 2008).
Happily, venison is a delicious meat. It is wild, natural and free range, and - almost fat-free - it is one of the healthiest meats available today. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Venison is high in protein, low in saturated fatty acids and contains higher levels of iron than any other red meat.

Fair play to her she has an open mind
An open mind for killing a sentient animal had done nothing wrong?
@@elliotraitopchannel shut up it management
Total respect Katie. Caring for wildlife and animals, but understanding why they have to be managed.
But it’s not the deers fault? Sadistic people will use any justification
Amazing vid and she has the perfect attitude. Conservation is important and it is so refreshing to see some one irrelevant of personal diet see things in such a way.
And the deer is ok with being murdered? Are you ok in the head? This attitude is the root of all that’s wrong with the world.
@@elliotraitopchannel im perfectly fine in the head thanks.
@@cantbearsedmechanics Listen, the deer has done nothing wrong. Apart from being born into the wrong body. Just like farm animals. There is NO difference
@@elliotraitopchannel you really need to learn about conservation and damage to ecology that over population of a species can cause. That over population is not natural as humans over the centuries have removed the apex predators causing the overpopulation. Overpopulation is harmful to the animal as food is reduced also it destroys the habits of many other animals thus upsetting the entire ballance of the ecosystem that is essential to keep animals safe and healthy and not cause extinctions.
@@cantbearsedmechanics But it’s not the deers fault we have a conservation problem? In their eyes they want to live just as much as sheep and cows. Who us vegans are fighting for
Good for you Katie. Open mind and great shot.
To be able to challenge your views, it is really difficult. She deserves a lot of respect.
I m very impressed by her ability to keep such a n open mind. Proper shot too
What about the mind of the deer that’s wants to live? It’s not their fault we have a conservation problem, which is a lame excuse anyway
@@elliotraitopchannel that's true, you could refuse to manage the population. Thats a choice as well. You would however end up with deer living longer, they would in the end be competing for food. And since they lose teeth rather fast some would starve, some get killed by younger bucks. Traffic casualties (not their fault either) would go up as well. But that would be nature's way
@@galderseweg Like I said. It’s not the deers fault we have a population problem. I get what you’re saying, but let’s not forget they are still a sentient being with a brain, heart, lungs ect who desires wellbeing. Just like the farm animals this girl cares for, there is no difference
@@elliotraitopchannel Hahaha
A reasonable vegan that's a new one 😂
She is NOT a vegan
I can now respect a vegan. I will be popping over to her site to buy a few prints, her work is breath taking.
***BREAKING NEWS*** A vegan with common sense
🤣🤣
Unbelievable.
She is NOT a vegan
I'm somewhat in the same boat as her; Don't support factory farming or overgrazing, so the only meat I eat is the game I get from my hunting trips.
And that’s ethical?
@@elliotraitopchannel yes
Well thats new, never thought I'd see the day
Well done katie great pictures love them.
I as a hunter I am proud of you for taking the shot well placed fast dispatch of the animal.
We as hunters want the best for the species and for conservation and to create the balance.
Well done again and great show.👍😁😁😁
Send this to vegans
Wow! How refreshing is that to see. Well done Katie, there must have been many emotions & thoughts going through your mind there. Its great to see a vegan with an open mind who can think for themselves on this subject.
She is NOT a vegan. And it’s refreshing to see a gentle innocent animal being murdered? Your sadistic mindset is the root of all that’s wrong with the world
She gets it cudos to you young lady I've always been of the opinion that hunter's and vegans are two sides of the same coin when you break it down it's all about conserving and maintaining our environment great shot perfect placement that deer died as quickly and humanily as possible
What a well balance young lady, she really get it, unlike so many others
There is a responsibility on both sides to understand how each contributes to conservation and wildlife ! Hunters spend millions on conservation and contribute to the health of our environment ! Smart young lady , she is not naive or closed minded .
But it’s not the deers fault is it? They are innocent sentient beings with eyes and brains and hearts and lungs who want to live
@@elliotraitopchannel I looked at your post and want to give you a good and fair answer . If you eat meat surely you must know how this food gets to your table . As a hunter and conservationist the harvesting of any animal requires work and preparation , the word hunting has been in existence since the beginning of time . I eat 95 percent of what I harvest , the amount of work that goes into gutting skinning and meat preparation requires a lot of work before it goes to the table . These animals , deer in this case , are free to roam until they are either killed by other predators such as coyotes and hogs in our area . Such is life on our planet , nothing goes to waste .
On the other hand there are those animals that never get out of a cage from birth and are feed until they are processed for consumption , those are the unlucky ones but they don’t go to waste . I understand your feelings and if your strictly a vegetarian then you can live with yourself , I am the same way with my feelings and try to appreciate what we have on this planet and thank our creator for the bounty he has provided .
Well done and a near perfect shot, the instructor is a very good shot as well, I’ve watched him 👏👏😂
This should be interesting...
stunning art work!
Perfect shot placement. The way Katie talks about veganism's ideals are entirely the same as hunters. Contradictory but true. Unfortunately the armchair 'conservationists' would rather not use their own brains but have some celebrity tell them what to think.
how much did use pay her only joking good to see people getting an understanding of what conservation is.But never seen a vegan in a jack pyke gilet very good artist non the less
Total respect Katie
Well done Katie!
Massive respect to her.
I wonder if she still follow her diet.
A lot of dietary vegans go back to eating meat sooner or later.
All vegans should see this before making comments.
Well well I want to remained you not everyone want to kill animals doesn’t matter if vegans or not
I meant judging wise, you don’t have to kill animals no one is forcing them or you. Just some information before you assume things.
Even if true vegan understand why animals are culled, he/she will not take a part in this. There are cullers/ hunters, who do this as job or hobby.
This is not vegan. Murder is murder. This is just some lame excuse to kill an innocent deer
@@elliotraitopchannel tit
Thats a good size rabbit
WOW! Normal people living in a normal world... Great video! Just subscribed to your channel! Great stuff!
The shooter lady...wow! respect!
Thanks. Welcome.
You gotta be kidding me. Let’s see you reincarnated as another mammal, the deer...
@@elliotraitopchannel No not kidding. I am pretty safe... I do not belong to any cult that believes that you are coming back as animal in "next" life time.
Not sure why tree huger go and watch hunting videos. Beats me.
Some ancient Asia people say good attitude, utilized, reproduction and be good to people.
People have to get food, including animals meat and plants harvest, so people have to manage them well; not only killing or can’t kill.
Perhaps some vegetarian may have opinions, but there’s a multitude aspects in the world.
Some Asia areas have white spots deers, getting reproduced more and more, that kind of deer meat is delicious.
Brilliant upload!!,,,,,sharing.
I see punching people in the face part of my pacifism. I see beating my wife is part of my feminism. I see keeping slaves as part of my belief in egalitarianism. So what if those things completely contradict the position I supposedly hold - don't judge me!
@@buckrussel3808 Replying four months later and *completely* missing the point.
@@buckrussel3808 Whats illegal isn’t always moral. How can killing an sentient animal that wants to live even be associated with veganism? This video is a complete joke
Nice one Katie, you won't be human if you didn't feel for the animal.👍
Don’t worry she isn’t vegan. Impossible if she committing murder for fun
It's like cake factory worker on sugar-free diet
a girl who took off her hat in front of the Prey that God offered him good girl
hmm sounds like my wife
This is how vegans should be😂
This isn’t even vegan? How can killling a sentient mammal that wants to live be even associated with veganism?

I am vegan, and this is a complete joke. The killing of a sentient animal that wants to live can never be associated with veganism. It’s not their fault we have a conservation problem. Just a fickle justification to hunt for fun
