the most important thing for the choice of my winterrig was mudguards. that is why i picked the canyon grail with sram xplr 13speed and the original canyon fenders. it is just awesome when you come home without beeing covered in shit and water/salt from the road.
Love a nice practical winter bike. I haven't got one as such but have a road and gravel bike and adapt one of them for winter use but really its my summer bike as well ! 😂
My preference would be 1x , Cleaning between chainrings and front mech can be a chore. I ‘ve gone with this recently and so far have not missed the additional gears of a 2x set up at all on the road
Yes I agree 1x would probably be my preference too, but the GRX 11 speed 1x gear ratios where I live aren’t spinny enough from my experience. Plenty of over 20% climbs here
I use my Specialized Allez Sport with a Tiagra groupset and some carbon wheels plus mudguards and added flaps. As you say aluminium is cheap and the Tiagra set up works well and again is cheap to replace when things wear out with all the grit, salt, general winter debris. Always have my Exposure lights and/or Garmin Varia plus SPD pedals. Really like your videos, keen to see what else you get up to in 2025. Cheers.
At last someone with mudguards 🙏 Winter bike was always previous racing bike, had a royal blue 531 Mercian for years, steel was real...slow but that was the idea lighter bike come Easter
Tubeless for me. Especially with gravel tires that are more hard wearing. I don’t really change what tools I have, usually take rubber gloves, a multi tool, tire levers, dynaplug and spare plugs, patches, mini pump, two inner tubes, valve extender, little rag to clean if needed. All in the saddlebag
i really need to sort out a winter bike / shop run bike, I have everything possible to build up a decent bike including dynamo hub I have an old Plant X london road, I want to switch my Ultegra Di2 of my bike on my trainer on to that bike just need to find some time
@ i want to try be less reliant on the car this year aswell so I want something I can jump on ride to the shops pick up some milk and bacon with out driving my car.
love a good winter bike. Bike looks spot on. If I was going for ultimate winter bike I might go for some sort of hub gear set up - would mean less maintenance. At 185cm I'm thinking I'd probably go for the same size. Is it a large?
Yeah a hub or belt based gear system would be a great option. I’m 183 and I ride a medium but could also happily and easily ride a large, I just prefer a smaller bike but yeah I’d probably suggest a large for you.

Makes a big difference doesn’t it!?

Haha that makes sense still! I’d guess the gravel bike may be the one you use for winter
Winter bikes are so good I never stopped riding mine!
Amen!

Have a grand weekend! 🍻
Thank you! Have a great weekend as well!

That sounds like a great setup! Thanks for watching!

Yeah there’s nothing wrong with riding a heavier bike in the winter right? Just wants to be bomb proof
My winter bike is my old 9 speed on a turbo trainer in the greenhouse! 😂😂😂
😂
Winter bikes are good I need to get a second bike. I’m wearing stuff out just riding to work and back everyday
Yeah completely! It’s definitely worth it
pdws r the best fenders on the planet - exquisite taste sair
They’re so so good. Genuinely worth every penny I think
Looks amazing! Inner tubes or tubeless? In terms of any spares/mechanical tools you ride with, any considerations of winter versus summer there?

Go for it! Sounds like a good plan to me

11-40 cassette?
Yep!
You know that it’s not going to rain now for 3 months now that your bike with mudguards is ready 😂… 👌
You can thank me later
Why is an aluminium frame a good pick for a winter bike?
They’re just generally cheaper and a winter bike is one for me and a lot of people in the uk, you’re less precious about
@ChrisHallRides yeah i assumed that were your arguments for Aluminium, makes sense. Thanks for clarifying!
