    I’m a bit speechless… I never really understood it quite like this. Your knowledge and ability to explain things is truly amazing. The “favourite” tip I’ve never thought of!!

    This channel deserves to be so much bigger than what it is. There is so much valuable information here.

    Firstly, I want to express my sincere appreciation for your incredible Apple Motion tutorials. Your talent and expertise have been immensely helpful, and it's clear you put a lot of effort into sharing your knowledge with the community. Your projects offer valuable insights, but sometimes I find myself searching for specific techniques or effects that might not be the main focus of the project-based tutorials. Would you consider creating videos that focus on individual practical effects, each with a clear title indicating the effect covered? This way, viewers can easily find guidance on the specific techniques they're interested in learning. Thank you for considering my suggestion, and please keep up the fantastic work!

    When I was switching from AE to Fusion I was wondering how the fact of not being able to precomp would affect my workflow, and then I understand it was never needed once if your application wasn't designed for it in the first place. Now that I'm playing with Motion I never felt the need to precomp since I always felt that everything was alway precomposed, but in a smart way.

    This is one of the many things I love about working with Motion 5 since the beginning. And thank you, Simon, for the great content you provide; it's always a pleasure to watch.

    I’m flattered my comment was the reason you made this video. That feature is incredible and was taken for granted in many tutorials and was not mentioned at all. Again, infinite thanks for explaining it

      My pleasure. There's nothing I enjoy more than trying to answer a very good question. Not least because it helps me to clarify my own thoughts.

    Thanks! Groups are the #1 thing missing from After Effects, and it's wild that it *still* doesn't have them after all these years.

      I guess Adobe think that precomps are more than enough ... and it's certain that After Effects users are not clamouring to see this as an option. But yes, for anyone coming from (or going between) Motion it's a really tiresome thing not to have.

    Thank you for changing the way I think about groups, Simon. It's really opened up my mind for a better workflow now that I think of groups as a more capable precomp!

    I’m used to learning new things from your videos, but the fact that I used motion for years and before your off hand comment I never knew that one could split a clip…

      Haha. I finally managed to teach you something you didn't already know! NB. You have do be in the timeline for it to be an option - I always forget that part.

    I've admittadely never used AE, but I have always loved how groups worked in Motion. But I have to admit my mind was blown when you showed that you can split AND retime them. I have been wanting that for multiple use cases and just assumed it wasn't possible from my limited messing around (though I admit I feel dumb for not knowing split, I just saw there was no blade tool like in Final Cut and assumed it wasn't possible). And the use of favorites is also helpful for many templated projects where I need to swap things in and out.

    As i make the jump from Motion to Ae, this is one thing I am missing, a lot. Dare I ask what the inelegant way of doing this in Ae is? I know you can have 2 comps open at the same timeline with a with a split screen, but of course as soon as you click into one the 'canvas' window changes, so you cant see your changes in your precomp against your main comp.

    • @SimonUbsdell
      @SimonUbsdell  5 місяців тому

      It's messy and a faff to do, although diehard Ae enthusiasts insist it's great. Basically you have to lock your main comp.

    Bravo, bien compris. Il y a une chose que Motion n'a pas bien. Le motion Blur. Celui de After effect est meilleur que Motion. Je n'ai jamais pu réussir à reproduire le motion Blur de After Effect dans Motion..

    As much as I don't like AE, there are actually a few benefits to Pre-Comps that you don't get from groups in motion:
    1. They're re-useable. The fact that Motion projects do not allow multiple comps is a real downside. In AE, I design something in one pre-comp and use it again and again across multiple comps. And if I change that comp, everything ripples. This is a main reason why you will rarely see anyone adopting motion to create full graphics packages.
    2. With the newer AE releases, since the introduction of MOGRTs, you can create custom controls for comps inside AE. (can't remember what they call them)... But this essentially gives you the ability to create one pre-comp with controls and then customize it every time you use that pre-comp. HUGELY helpful, and something that Motion cannot replicate.

    • @tvchris
      @tvchris 5 місяців тому

      Completely agree that MOGRTs are inferior to Motion's rigging in every conceivable way... I'm not an Adobe fanboy by any stretch... But AE has a way of rigging pre-comps inside of AE (forget the Premiere implementation) but is INCREDIBLY powerful. I like this series because there are so many little things that if Apple got it right, I would still be in FCPX every day.

      I have to confess I don't actually use Motion these days except to make tutorials. All the work that I used to do in Motion I'm now doing in After Effects and that's been the case for a few years now. On reflection your points are good ones. I suppose the point of this was simply to highlight the advantages of Motion Groups over Ae precomps, which are not inconsiderable.

    It’s really a shame that Apple doesn’t care enough about Motion to promote it even a little… Literally nobody knows about this software.
    Personally I really like Motion but it unquestionably suffers from the lack of plugins and the poor vector workflow.
