You guys should really hold on The Abyss until it releases on 4K bluray in march. The streaming version is always encoded to crap bitrates. True Lies will then also get its bluray release, but yeah that one looks shit with fake wax faces and overdone by AI denoise filtering. Luckily, true lies is available in 1080p on less than reputable online sources where it looks great and it's probably sourced from some tv airing where they just took the scan as is and didn't denoise/upscale it to shit.
Zack explained that Netflix asked him to have a shorter version. They told him that their data showed that viewers will binge watch hours of TV shows, but were less likely to watch a 3-4 hour movie. No explanation why that is, that’s just what their numbers show. So they guaranteed they’d let him release his longer version later as long as he gave them the “theatrical” version first. But it works out for Netflix, as they get four movies for the price of two.
In a box office draft I’m in, i was last in the draft (10 people) so i had picks 10 and 11 - i picked Wonka and John Wick 4. The only two available i could have picked that did better than these two were Barbenheimer which at the time - never expected them to do more than $150m each.
The processing done on the most recent Cameron 4K releases were done by Park Road Post, which is a Peter Jackson company that used AI denoising from 4K scans for all the movies according to The Digital Bits and confirmed by Lightstorm. Which I think is what was used in The Beatles Get Back doc that looked HORRIBLE. However it's been a few years and that was 16mm stock that wasn't the most well looked after. How True Lies made it through the Cameron approval process I have no idea. Like Kevin said, it looks awful, oversharpened at times and incredibly smooth other times, sometimes both at the same time with eyes that can sort of swim around like early deepfakes did. Aliens looks denoised and smooth but not quite as terrible, this was also a problem with T2 on a blu-ray release i believe, so it's happened to his movies before with other DNR tech. The Abyss straddles the line well between noise reduction and clarity ( I saw it in theatres and thought it looked good) and Titanic comes out looking the best, it looks very sharp, borderline oversharpened and sometimes a tad smoothed but you have to be looking for it, from a reasonable distance it's not that noticable. Maybe because it is also the newest and most well taken care of it was an easier conversion. I think Cameron said they had already done the work when they did the 3D release years ago but needed to do the HDR grading when it was re-released this past valentine's day.
