    UPDATE: For those wondering, yes, some of the footage is in one of the 3 colorblind modes. This game has really weird colorblind options that end up applying color changes to the whole screen, rather than just the HUD.

    George, I love you and your content man but I have to disagree with a lot of the things you say. I know this isn't the intent but it does sound like you're blaming the game for your obsession to fulfill checklists as the things you bring up are entirely optional; things like the upgrade system, secrets, automap, challenges, etc are ultimately there for completionists much like getting perfect and par runs in classic Doom. They REALLY don't take away from the experience whatsoever especially when the experience is that damn good that the gameplay would easily overshadow these issues anyway. I still enjoyed your video, it was definitely fun to watch but it's easily your most nitpicky yet. I know that's probably the entire point of the whole video but it just seemed silly. Sorry :/ I do feel like a prick when I critique a UA-camr I like over something this small.

      You have the most respectful disagreement, so I'll reply here. But I don't get the hate. I think the entire video is endearing. It's like the entire time, he's saying 'god damn that was fun! but GOD DAMN I wish I wasn't such a completionist.' That's kind of what reviews are. He's not guessing what people will like. He's just telling his experience with it. Like writing into a journal.
      This style is IMO the most informative and entertaining possible. If you want objective, go to Metacritic. You know? Like do you [all] (other commentors in general) feel a need to find a youtuber to rip off all your opinions from?

      But they're ultimately a part of the game. Why shouldn't all facets of a game be up for critical judgment? You wouldn't say MGS5 is a perfect game because of its gameplay, and say all talk of its mediocre side quests and main story should be ingnored simply because the gameplay is great.

    • @Narratorway

      That's not an invalid point, BUT there is an argument - which admittedly he does not make - for cohesion and dilution. Those texts, that interface, the ENTIRETY of the game that _isn't_ ripping and/or tearing...has NOTHING to do with DOOM. It feels very much like it was from a much different overly self-serious version of the game which they just didn't have the time/inclination to change and since the prompts for that shit keep popping up, it becomes that much more difficult to ignore the dissonance..._especially_ when the entire _point_ of the Doom Marine as a character in-game is that he wouldn't give two fist fucks about that kind of bullshit. So not only is it annoying, its sabotaging the very premise of the game.

    • @benjaminchen8857
      @benjaminchen8857 8 років тому

      Narratorway lol ludonarrative dissonance argument. Maybe the game was intentionally giving you overly boring narrative so you can roleplay ignoring it like the marine would. Which is actually less ludonarratively dissonant than the alternative, which is to pluck the decision away from you. Or maybe they were hedging on a big budget game. Who knows with these things?

    The amount of comments Saying that it's not valid criticism to complain about a part of the game that is needed for 100% completionism is strange to me. He even suggests that when playing the game you should ignore all of it because it's not good. The point still stands that these features could have been implemented better and I think I think George criticized it in such a way that it doesn't undermine the parts of the game that are good. Secret hunting in old arena shooters used to be exciting but in this game they've somehow made the dumb decision to tie it to under-developed gameplay mechanics that makes the entire thing feel less like a pure arena shooter experience and more like ID didn't know any other way to make the game more modern. Criticizing one part of the game that sticks out as a sore thumb to gamers with a completionist mindset IS valid criticism.

    • @IronicHavoc
      @IronicHavoc 5 років тому +1

      The way secrets were tied into the old Dooms is a holdover of it being about a much more unforgiving and inflexible resource management shootrt, something they got around with health and ammo mechanics in the new game. Now they're just something that's fun to find organically or if you're interested. If being a completionist is something you have to do at the expense of your own fun I don't think people should have to design around.
      I understand the premise of his criticism and how it doesn't detract from the rest of the game but even then I think it's unreasonable.

    • @IronicHavoc
      @IronicHavoc 5 років тому

      Hunting for secrets in old arena shooters wasn't much better about breaking flow people were just more accustomed to it because it was more integral to the whole resource aspect of the game. I don't think that's necessarily a plus.

      Critiques can be subjective - that's what makes them interesting instead of just listing a game's features. They also help you consider other point of views, whether or not you agree with them. Especially for a game type that hasn't been made successfully for almost 10 years, for it to come back and be able to work in the modern game environment that is really awesome. It's the critic's job to focus and explain the parts that they don't like. It's so YOU the informed watcher can then make the decision to buy it or not based on if those small annoyances would affect you personally or not. He did a great job like always.

      That's the way critics work. They point out the parts that they don't like as a gift for you so that you have good information to decide if you want the game or not. You get to make a personal choice, if you don't mind what he finds as a problem then you will probably like the game. He is helping you. Since these complaints he had were pretty small parts of the game that means that the whole rest of the game he found no problem with at all which means he likes it. Have you seen TotalBiscuits reviews? He is so incredibly negative but that's because it's his job to find out for you bad parts of a game so that you can decide for yourself if the game is still worth playing. And he is super popular. If nobody did that for us then we would all be buying games that we wouldn't find out were not fun to play until we actually tried them ourselves.

    • @android19willpwn
      @android19willpwn 8 років тому +36

      there's a difference between content that's bad and content that isn't for everyone. I personally enjoyed all the world building in the codex entries and found them to be well written, and some of them (the ones where the cult is explaining to the initiates) be be rather funny. But it's not for everyone and I get that. It's not that he's critiquing the optional content, it's that he's saying it makes the rest of the game worse, when it really should be having no effect whatsoever because, at least for the codex entries, it can be completely ignored with no detriment to the gameplay. He complains about the codex entries breaking up the gameplay because every time he gets one he looks at it immediately, despite not liking any of them and thinking they break up the gameplay. That's kinda entirely his fault.

    • @akindlyorc
      @akindlyorc 8 років тому +22

      Well they do make the game worse. It's worse for him and players like him. His explorer/achiever play style isn't any less valid because not everyone shares it and the game is designed in a way that detracts from people who play the game in that way. I think Veovis is spot on.

I played the game the same way he did and greatly enjoyed myself, but I would normally leave reading the codex until the end of the level, or even go a few levels without reading it before catching up on what I had gathered. It only made the game worse for him because he wanted the game to be worse for him. He chose to stop and read entries he found boring, despite the only reason to read them being if you found them interesting and wanted to read them. They weren't what was taking from his enjoyment. He was.

I actually tilted my head at that like a confused dog. Like, that was never a hallmark of the franchise. Sure, they had different character models in Quake 3 you could play other than regular Quake-Guy, but can you really say that unique characters were a defining aspect of the franchise? The first Quake game didn't even have different models, so it was never there from the beginning either.

      You are the one attempting to be profound. Their comments had no such pretense. Also, it's not just his opinion, he's objectively wrong about this. He misunderstood the game.
      Furthermore, you're wrong to characterize these comments as simple variations of "it's just your opinion." You are misinterpreting them when they say that it's his fault for having OCD. The subtext is that the rare frustrating challenges are meant to be skipped and that you can't even equip all of the upgrades at once. The point ceiling is high to reward more thorough players with greater game knowledge who want to be able to play with every single toy the game throws at them in a single playthrough. Most games don't even give you enough points for every upgrade. DOOM's design is better imo. Higher knowledge-reward ceiling, complements the MOAR GUNZ angle of DOOM, etc.
      In DOOM, you can equip every single gun you receive, and half of the weapon upgrades. Having less points available, less challenges and secrets to do, less weapon upgrades or less codex entries would not make it a better game. This isn't his opinion, it's user error.

      Here's a legitimate argument. Maybe some people find reading lore information interesting, because they find the world interesting and want to learn more about it. How is that a flaw of the game, just because one person happens to, apparently, not really care about world immersion, so dismisses it as "flavor text?"
      I also think it's worth mentioning that he, and the other critics he mentions, kind of are making a big assumption by saying that the appeal of Doom isn't the nightmare but the power trip. Personally, I find the nightmare and the deformed monster variations, plus the potential in the game for legitimate dread, a lot more interesting, than just the ability to demolish everything in your path, and it's actually disappointing that the new Doom heads more in this not-so-intelligent direction.

    George's point is that elements that one might find more interesting than most could've been integrated into the game much, much better. The secrets were a major point of frustration for me. I would like a reason to return to them upon another play-through - like in DOOM 1&2 - but there's really no reason to.

      Man I felt that the secrets were really well implemented. The fact that they gave you bonus points made me actually want to find them for once. I've never actively gone looking for secrets in a doom game until now, so I say they're doing something right here. It made the downtime more enjoyable and imo the combat is why replay ability suffer. It's fun in the moment but after a while it feels very same-y.

      Right on, man. I'm glad you enjoyed it (and I'm not being sarcastic). I just can't shake the feeling that they're missteps and really dulled the action for me. And the action is so damn good that it's bizarre to have RPG-like mechanics and collectables take the player out of it for so long and for little to no in-the-moment gain. And let's face it, Doom Guy ain't exactly the "prepare for combat and collect some dolls" type of guy.
      Menu-based RPG mechanics are for games where you prepare for combat, and DOOM is 100% about saying "FUCK EVERYTHING" and ripping and tearing everything a new one without hesitation. You can still have "quiet time" just like DOOM and DOOM 2 had - I think people forget how much time you spend exploring in those games - it's how DOOM 4 spends its quiet time that I find bizarre.

      Secrets don't play the same role they did in classic Doom here. New Health and Ammo mechanics make them much less of an integral part of the game, which honestly is probably a step forward IMO. People who are accustomed to the old philosophy of the secrets and apply it to this game I think are doing themselves a disservice.

    It's interesting how different playstyles can completely change games for different players. I didn't feel any need to pay attention to ANY of these things. I didn't read a bit of flavor text. I didn't attempt any of the weapon challenges for those upgrades. I just plowed headfirst into the combat and got the upgrades that came easy. I didn't look for any secrets, though I stumbled on a couple.
    This video seems like more of a complaint with your own brain than with the game itself. "I just want to rip and tear!" you say, but you also click tab every time. If you do NOT want to read flavor text, you shouldn't press tab just because you can. That's on you.
    Then again, if this additional content truly has nothing to offer, then it is a flaw to include it in the frst place. But where we would disagree is how big of a flaw it is. For a non-completionist, it's a minor, tiny, easily ignored flaw. For a completionist like yourself it seems to suck up much of the joy the game has in abudance.

    Sounds like an option to hide lore popups would do some good. However about the secrets... It is fairly modern to show SECRETS HERE, but the boring drudging through levels for health+ammo caches _was_ integral to the original, at least on harder difficulties. Without a Doom 2016 ability to reap ammo from stunned enemies, in old Doom you _would_ find yourself in a horrific old-school Resident Evil position; tons of hard enemies on a new level, little to no firepower to deal with them. This made secrets just as crucial as they are here. That being the case, I struggle to see if you dislike this mechanic entirely in both instances, or only in the new game. Watch Errant Signal's video on the subject, older Doom played slowly and deliberately whereas new Doom you _seemingly_ (I haven't played the game) can utilize the finishing moves to forgo the resource problem _a bit_ albeit your guns might be a bit weaker if you do so.

    EDIT: I phrased my first comment very poorly, and did not present my main point. What I meant to say was that George chose to criticise the most arguable and subjective aspects of the game, and not only do I believe all of them are not problems, I think that they are all good things. I made the original comment because I had strong feelings on this matter. Of course, that means that the comment came from a deep, ugly place that can be characterized as the "someone is complaining about something I like" hole. Anyways, I just want to say that I believe George's playstyle, specific interests and feature desires/preferences, and maybe even skill level (at points, and he has enough FPS skill to mostly offset any troubles he would have here) affected his opinion of Doom, and probably don't represent the majority opinion on the game. ORIGINAL: ...Sorry Bunny, but this time, I think your criticisms are mostly subjective. I was particularly shocked when I heard that you actually stopped playing the game to read the all of the lore that the in-game cutscenes basically dismiss and mock. I mean, I would have done the same thing, but I can stomach reading every single entry in FFXIII's Datalog as soon as it became available, so I can enjoy just about anything.

Sure, I agree that they could be a bit more subtle even though I've been guilty of fucking it up from time to time because I can be an idiot. Still, I do not agree with how you feel that the lore is unnecessary when you do not have to look at them. That's for people who want to learn more about the world. Otherwise, Rip and Tear. I am a person who loves challenge and getting out of my comfort zone. That's why I love doing challenges and just finding every single demon to destroy. My main problem with the upgrades was definitely all the challenges. When I'm in the middle of obliterating the skulls of hordes of demons, the last thing I want to worry about is performing 5 different variations of glory kills on imps. It needlessly slows things down and gets very annoying, very quickly. That said, I did like upgrading my health, armor, ammo and weapons (mainly because I'm anal about exploring every nook and cranny of games, so secret hunting feeling necessary didn't bother me personally). I don't think the game exactly needed those, but it was kind of satisfying to continually get a better set of gear throughout the game. The main issue was, as you said, how much getting said gear interrupted the core gameplay.

    You don't have to find the secrets.
    You don't have to read the flavor text.
    You don't have to get all the upgrades.
    You can just focus on the combat.
    If your particular playstyle causes you grief with these optional mechanics, that's on you. I can usually fault the developer on things that break the experience of a game, but not this one. If you're a checklist player and are also bothered by checklists, there's little to objectively critique.

      If they are in your direct path and you get points for simply playing the game, why do they exist if not to provide the player with vapid false sense of completion? I see this problem in many other modern titles as well.

    • @makkon06
      @makkon06 8 років тому +8

      Because the layer of mastery is there for those who want it. Like me. I maxed out every weapon because I like to. And for players like you, who don't want it, you are not punished for almost entirely ignoring it. I don't consider this a "vapid sense of completion" but rather a decent compromise to satisfy customers who love feature x AND customers who hate feature x.

    • @Ken-dt9hw
      @Ken-dt9hw 8 років тому +2

      Makkon
      I don't mean to refer to anything about mastery. That implies learning something to improve at the game? If a game has an upgrade tree in which certain upgrades are necessary to complete the game (because it gets harder as you go through) and the game gives you upgrade points for doing nothing out of the ordinary in terms of gameplay, why are they upgrades at all? Why are they even part of the progression system which is really what I am criticizing here.
      I mean if you need an upgrade you have no choice but to get it so how is it a choice at all. How is it any different from the designers simply skipping the XP and upgrade trees and giving you the ability when they wish to or even from the beginning of the game except for telling the player that they've filled a checkbox, increased a level counter, etc.

HL2 for example breaks up combat with vehicle sections, puzzles and caches containing ammo, health and shields (and no checklists or infodumps or "read me" prompts). Doesn't mean it's perfect at breaking up combat fatigue (people kinda got tired of the seesaw puzzles and buggies), but there's definitely ways to break up combat that are less "checklist-y" and detached from the main game

    Not your best video overall. I think you should have put more effort into establishing "this complaint is entirely because of my playstyle." Don't misunderstand me; I totally, totally get what you're saying, and I think it's a completely valid complaint for "why [you] don't like the game as much as you could", but I can't really say it's a fault of the game. I did in fact completely ignore everything on my first playthrough and just blew through the game, and then went back on a second playthrough and collected everything, which incidentally was much easier once I knew the general layout of the levels. I think completionism-on-first-playthrough is a common problem and I think people who have that problem need to stop it, because I used to be one of those people. If you want to get everything, do it on a second playthrough. In a slower, more methodical game (like say, Tomb Raider), it can be okay, but in something like Doom, you're only working against yourself.

    Hmm... I really thought he would consider the "Inaction" of the game to be a plus instead of a flaw. Like, when I was playing the game, and looking high-and-low for secrets and items, I was thinking: "Gee, this seems like the "Quiet time" that George talked about in his one video." and thought that he would enjoy the game even more because of that. Instead he talks about how he just wants to: RIP AND TEAR!!! and not read flavor text or explore the environment.
    You know, I've learned a lot about games through his videos, and I've really come around to enjoying games in ways I couldn't before. George talks about how much he loves: "Game feel", "Kinestetics", "Quiet time", and "Lore" and all that stuff, the kind of sophisticated high-brow enjoyment of games. Yet, when playing this game, he disregards all of that for the "Spongebob" definition of F-U-N.
    "I know RIP AND TEAR!!! is fun and all, but c'mon George! enjoy some "Quiet time" on the Mars-Base and in Hell for once and a while, eh!?" :)

      this comment is a great example of when you absorb knowledge and concepts without any form of critical thinking and analysis from the learner.
      quiet time does not exist in a vacuum and you have to use your brain that both you and bunny possess to examine the world the player is exploring, the ui elements that lead you there (or don’t), soundtrack, and way you traverse. doom’s exploration for secrets is just poor and if you can’t see that cause bunny said quiet time is good in a video once then please use your brain more lmao

    • @D00mnukem
      @D00mnukem Рік тому

      @@ohweezuschrist Thanks for the comment. You know, I posted this nearly 7 years ago, and thanks to your reminder I can confidently say that I'm still right about this one. I may have worded it kind of bad with the sarcastic quotes around the words and the snarkiness of it all but my main criticism here was that George was letting his perceived duties as a game reviewer get in the way of enjoying the quiet time that the game had to offer, and I still stand by that. Let me try and justify that:
      George claims that the "inaction" of the game is bad because the game railroads (maybe even forces) you into it and that because it’s not "good" inaction, it detracts from the experience. I honestly think this criticism of the game comes from more the mindset George had going into this game (and the fact that he’s a completionist) then it being a fact of nature. Hell, he even gives a disclaimer that he was trying to complete as much of the game as fast as possible for review purposes, which means that his review was going to be biased toward harsh criticism of the game when it slows down between moments of action. Despite there being quiet time in the game that fits his definition of a good example of it, he disregards it so he can "RIP AND TEAR!", and then wonders why he isn’t enjoying the game when it slows down. You could argue that under his definition, games like Doom 2016 would be an exception, except that he cited the original Doom as a good example of quiet time in his original video. Awkward map geometry slowing down the gameplay? As if the original Doom didn’t have awkward level design to begin with. Hell, some levels required the player to sprint across wide gaps since there wasn’t a way to jump in the game, and let me tell you, falling into lava pits and dying because of awkward player movement in an engine that was never designed for platforming definitely slowed the game down. So did also having to backtrack through a dozen rooms to flip a switch you missed 10 minutes ago, and that was pretty frequent in lots of levels. He also cited Metal Gear Rising as an example in his original video as well, and that game, along with all of the Devil May Cry games before it, had plenty of moments of awkwardly trying to jump up narrow ledge that had some goodies tucked away on it. Trying to clear a gap repeatedly isn’t particularly fun, but George would make you think so. Honestly, if he made a video about "quiet time" today, he’d probably say that it’s good to have moments like this, because it would slow the game down and give you an opportunity to hone your platforming skills or something, as if Doom 2016 doesn’t do the same thing with it’s secrets tucked away in the level geometry. It’s also pretty funny watching him complain about scouring for power-ups while showing footage of him trying to repeatedly jump on ledges that clearly have invisible walls blocking him, which really shows how eager he was to collect everything at all costs.
      However, when I played the game, I never made it my prerogative to collect everything or get all the upgrades, and I highly doubt most players did either, so for the most part, even if we assume the inaction was poorly designed, it doesn't really matter. The game doesn't force players into collecting everything and you really don't need to collect anything to beat the game. Sure, the upgrades can make the game easier, but your base arsenal is solid enough to get you through the game with enough practice, even on the harder difficulties. Hell, even if you weren't trying that hard to explore, you would eventually get enough of the tokens (or whatever they were) to get most the prime upgrades, so quiet time, at least the "go around and search every nook and cranny" kind of quiet time he describes in this video is completely optional for players who want it. However, there definitely IS plenty of quiet time outside of searching for collectables/power-ups. I can't remember which level it was, but you basically come back from Hell to see the Mars base frozen over, and I remember taking a moment to stop and appreciate the work the artist had put into the game. In fact, A lot of the Mars facility and Hell were like that, now that I think about it. It was usually at the start of levels or after killing the nests, you get a moment to breath after combat and appreciate the design of the game and hop around and shit, which might lead some players to explore for items, but once again, completely optional. Watching this video again, it's really just a bunch of whinging at stuff that are either a "skill" issue or a "personal" issue for George. The "skill" issue could've been solved is he had ignored the “nook and cranny” quiet time, and just played the game and got better through natural progression. Or, he could've embracing the “nook and cranny” quiet time and got the upgrades so that he'd be artificially strong enough to beat most enemies with the utility the upgrades serve (which he was gonna get just by playing the game at a comfortable pace anyway). It's a win-win no matter what.
      You could argue that the design of the inaction is bad, but I don't think George here makes any good arguments in his favor. First, he complains about icons on a map and throws up a clip of the collectable doll or whatever, which is completely inconsequential to beating the game. Either this was just a bad edit at best or a dishonest edit at worst (although I don't think George would do that). The first toy that players find near the start of the game is pretty easy to obtain, and any player that doesn't care about the story will get it, see that it's just a toy that gives no upgrades, and will promptly ignore it for the rest of the game. He also complains about the little "tab" info dumps and codexes being unavoidable, but they absolutely are. Any player that doesn't care about the story will open one up, see that it's just flavor text, and will promptly ignore it for the rest of the game. George's argument is that he just can't help himself to open them up when the "tab" appears, but that’s just sounds like a “personal” issue to me. If his ADHD brain can't help it (as a fellow ADHD brain, I can relate), then that's fine, whatever. His frustration is genuine, but it's not the game's responsibility to minimize that in the same way that it's not a laser light-show's responsibility to minimize their flashing lights for people with epilepsy. Sure, they could have probably made it be a bit less intrusive (kind of like the Bayonetta example he gave in the video), but I honestly think it's less of an annoyance and more of a friendly reminder for players who care enough about that stuff to tell them: "Hey! your info dump is a key press away!" I guess it worth mentioning his dislike for the flavor text itself, but at least according to the players who cared enough to look at that stuff (I'm going off a vague memory of reddit posts from 2016; forgive me), they enjoyed it for the most part. If George didn't enjoy it, that fine. I can't say I cared that much for the story either but did the game force me to absorb all the flavor text? Absolutely not. There's another commenter on this video that tells it better than I can, but the jist of it is that the developers really designed the flavor text on the idea that it's there for players who want it, and easily dismissible for those that don't. "I'm Doom guy, I shouldn't have to stop and smell the roses!" Well, I got some good news for you, George - you don’t have to. The game's not forcing you to, and it's not "railroading" you either. The game gives you a taste of what traveling off the beaten path can give you, and if you care enough to stop and smell those roses, it will reward you. If you don't, it'll still throw some bones your way to keep you from getting discouraged.
      At the time I made this comment, I was watching his channel regularly, so you could imagine how taken aback by what he had to say. I distinctly remember playing the game and thinking about how much I enjoyed the slower moments of the game and how it reminded me of his quiet time video, and that honestly made the game just that much more enjoyable for me but what would I know about “quiet time”? I mean, I just absorb information with no critical thinking skills, right?
      TL;DR - In prettier, less snarky words, I think that if George had just played the game at his own pace without having to worry about having to clear all the content for the sake of getting a review out, he would've considered the “inaction” of the game to be good instead of bad.

    Maybe I just interpret too much into things, but to me what you are suggesting (to ignore all that lore and most of the upgrade stuff) is pretty much exactly what the Doom Guy is trying to get across to you with his gesticulation from the first minute on to pretty much the end.
    To me, even the thing that you suddenly get locked into rooms to have characters talking to you for 2-4 minutes midgame after Doom Guy smashed screens and disregarded everything that Hayden guy said in the first 60 minutes of gameplay feels incredibly intentional. It feels like criticful commentary. Like it constantly tries to push "well, people have done this stuff in shooters for more than a decade now. are you feeling how annoying and stupid this is yet, after we gave you freedom from this for a while?" into your face. Half of the upgrade system feels like a part of that commentary, especially because you just don't need any of it to beat the game. I'd even argue that playing without upgrades makes it considerably more enjoyable.
    It feels intentional to make a statement, but it surely doesn't feel like an identity crisis of some sort.
    The multiplayer feels like one though. So do the modding tools. :^

    Personally I liked the optional content, I gravitated towards a few weapons and upgrades more than others, so I never felt like I was missing out on something by not upgrading it. And as far as the secrets went, I never used the map, as I found it more fun to just wander these wonderfully designed levels and see what I could get. And I appreciate that the levels are designed in a way that stumbling across certain secrets while completely missing others while just going though the level linearly was entirely possible. I think the game takes into account a lot of playstyles. I understand where you're coming from, but all of the things you had a problem with, I really enjoyed

      ***** It's OK to look for secrets, but you don't have to be obsessive with them. I tend to obsess with secrets too, but not with this game!
      This is not what DOOM is about. DOOM is about shooting demons in the face! If you like looking for secrets, maybe an open world sandbox game will appeal to you more.

    • @Sinrus1
      @Sinrus1 8 років тому +2

      ***** Not really huge benefits. You get swag but tbh one upgrade is plenty and if you don't like hunting for them then there is nothing to compel you to hunt for them aside from the desire of the player.
      Difficulty ramps up but the upgrades that you get by naturally playing the game and maybe occasionally hunting for secrets will have you plenty armed for the future challenges.
      The game even has quite a bit of design around people not wanting to hunt for secrets. The weapon upgrades are largely sidegrades that grant a new tool in exchange for ammo (a new tool that no enemy forces you to use) and same goes for the armor.

    You don't have to blame yourself for OCD here. Developers are guilty for all this. Generally stuff like sidequests for rewards/upgrades don't give you a way to know if, by the end of the game, you will look back on that time spent as boring and wasteful. Optional content just isn't truly optional when the player can't predict how they'll feel about it later. If your default assumption is to trust that the developer didn't create detrimental content, then it might as well be mandatory content for the first playthrough.

Interesting that the notification was enough to pull you into reading them, that's something devs should consider, but I think it's a decent enough compromise to have the notification there so that the people that actually like reading flavor text (whoever they are) can have an easy time getting to it.

    thank you for this video. I played this game for the first time in 2019 expecting to really enjoy it but had the same problems you point out. I love the efffing combat system and wanted more of THAT content. give me the mobs. instead, i felt like I was playing a poorly designed Metroid-vania I couldn't figure out. the Foundry in particular is where I gave up on the campaign. It just wasn't fun anymore. peaks and valleys. when mobs showed up, I felt like fucking John Wick. amazing shit. then I was met with endless backtracking, studying a multi-layered 3d map like homework, and just plain not knowing where the fuck to go. on top of that, for new players, there is no real reason you should know to check bodies for keys... so within my first 10 minutes I was lost looking for a blue key on some corpse hiding behind a fucking box. with all the on screen pop ups, why not say something like "checking bodies for useful items is a good idea." that's all the sign-posting I would have needed. whatever. I paid like $10 for it in 2019, so I don't care as much. but if I paid $60 for this in 2016, id be livid. thanks for this review. it made me feel less like an idiot for having these opinions in a world where very few point out its obvious faults.

Most of the challenges seemed like completely optional content. However, I can see how that might change on higher difficulties.
    Regarding the codex entries: the game is informing you that you received new optional lore that you can read now by pressing TAB. It's not telling you to; it's barely making itself known. Overall, I felt that there was a clear separation between optional and mandatory content., so I don't agree with most of the inaction points. Just my two cents.

    Yeah, going back to get all the secrets sucked the fun out of the game for me too, now I still haven't beaten it :

      Well, but it's locking weapon upgrades behind those secrets and whether or not you do them is irrelevant to the point that that is bad design

    These comments hurt....the game is punishing him for trying to play the game the way he would have liked, like a completionist. Just because you aren't a completionist doesn't mean he can't be.

    George, you are the only guy that doesn't care about flavor text and still reads it. Most people that don't care don't read it, and those flavor text are there for the people who want to know more. I see no disavantages in including something that you can easily ignore.
    And about upgrades, I can understand the problem that you feel, but a lot of people like the sense of progression that those secrets offered in Doom 4. If you put it, it's bad for people like you, if you take it away some other people will pop up to complain for the lack of content.
